Organizational metaphors help researchers to shape concepts of behaviors, management, and structure in a simple and easy for the perception image. Organizational theorists broadly utilize this tool to classify different types of companies in the contemporary world and to reflect their evolution throughout the history of organizational development. The metaphors of machine and organism have been used most frequently to facilitate understanding and communication about the complex phenomenon of organization (Smircich, p. 340). Roughly, these two metaphors reflect the most common theories of the organizational development – classical theory and humanistic perspective. Some scholars even compare organization with genitalia emphasizing gender aspect of companies (Linstead, Marechal 2015). To illustrate one of the Morgan’s (2012) metaphors of organizations, I would like to provide brief description and analyzes of the nonprofit agency Bill Wilson Center. Bill Wilson Center is one of the leading service providers to at-risk children and families in Santa Clara County. The organization provides direct services to more than 3,500 children, youth, young adults, and families in the County. It provides employment to 300 professionals. One of the introductory statements on the organization’s website emphasizes: ‘Our agency - from our executive team to our line staff - is committed to improving the lives and conditions of the people we serve.' The organization implements more than twenty different programs for children youth and adults. They include housing programs for homeless, runaway and foster youth: group homes, shelter, drop-in housing program, transitional housing program, etc. It also provides family counseling, outreach school counseling, family therapy, parental classes, grief counseling in the center for leaving with dying and many others It trains, creates and supports foster families and host homes. Workers, who took part in the experiment were divided into two groups – test and control. The test group experienced to work in 3 different levels of the light intensively while the condition of the control group was not different from usual. Surprisingly production increased in both – test and control - groups. In other experiments, the light was decreased or left the same while participants believed that there was a change. This empirical studies resulted in an increase of productivity. It started to occur to the researchers that results have something to do with human motivation rather than with the illumination.
It basically helps women and children through family oriented activities. I can provide for them. When a victim leaves the house, they don't have time to pack. They just have the first opportunity to leave... If any child in the shelter has a birthday, we bring cakes... I want to bring hope to women and children of domestic abuse, and that's what we do.
The effects of a cancer diagnosis can be absolutely devastating, not only for the patient, but for family and loved ones as well. People affected by cancer have to cope with not only cancer treatments, but also with the stress, financial concerns, and the emotions that are part of living with cancer. Fortunately, nobody has to face these problems alone; The Center for Building Hope has free services that can help. “The Center for Building Hope offers free information, programs, and services to cancer patients, caregivers and family members, while connecting them with others who are going through a similar experience. These services are available through
As you know, our mission is to offer at-risk teens a safe, therapeutic, home-like environment where they may adequately work through the issues of emotional/psychological distress, behavioral disorders, delinquency, dysfunctional family relations and educational achievement/advancement using proven counseling methods.
Researcher will adopt a three-pronged approach in order to address every possible facet and in order to construct as rich an experiment as possible. For this reason, a qualitative rather than quantitative approach will be taken. Firstly,
For my Family Service Report, I met with and talked to Katie Conklin, Director of Services for the program Tuesday’s Child. Tuesday’s Child is a non-profit program that is operated out of DePaul College Prep. The program was established as a means to help parents with children ages 18-months to 6-years-old who are experiencing behavioral issues. The training is completed with both parent and child, and done with one-to-one peer assistance––with each family being paired with their own counselor. The individualized attention ensures that each family is given the appropriate amount of assistance to problem solve their specific needs. Tuesday’s Child’s mission statement is as follows: “Tuesday’s Child enables families to thrive through positive parent training, inclusive behavioral classrooms and support services. Our proven model impacts home, school, and the community.”
The alliance is made possible through the efforts of six staff members, with Chris Martin as the president, and a Board of Directors made up of thirteen people. The organization also attains the insights of consulting and training professionals in order to provide nonprofits with the best possibly training. Though the combined efforts of all those mentioned, the Alliance is able to offer professional and much needed resources to the Knoxville nonprofit community.
For this reason, nonprofits were chosen as the mode of production and management of new affordable units because they had a wholesome image with the American public (Bratt, 1998). This image, coupled with a track record for having the health, welfare, and safety of the public in mind made nonprofits very attractive to legislators and popular with the public.
In addition to the significant financial challenges in obtaining funding and securing capital, the reputational risk is much greater for nonprofits than for-profit businesses (Jackson, 2008). He suggests that cases of fraud or misuse of funding can be especially damaging for nonprofits. Because nonprofit organizations are formed to provide a service to the community and are reliant upon outside donors to serve their mission, they must take certain precautions to safeguard their assets and maintain their relationships with the community. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the financial health of The Assistance League of Bend.
Organizations are social entities that are driven by goals that are designed intentionally, and coordinated activity systems and they are linked to the external environment. It means that the organization should have a way of linking the internal and external environments. Organizations are made of people and the relationship between the people is essential. There is a deliberate move by organization management to come up with structures that ensure coordination of
As a social service worker, I have found myself working with individuals from an organization called Specialized Alternatives for Families and Youth (SAFY). This community service provider is a leading national nonprofit organization that provides a full continuum of services for children and youth in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems. SAFY is an organization that can be found not only in Kentucky but also in Alabama, Indiana, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Nevada, and South Carolina. Their mission is to work towards preserving families and securing families. Their vision: to be a national leader in the provision of community based care resulting in permanency and wellbeing for families and youth. (SAFY)
Nonprofit organizations have several functions, and not each one is alike. Essential to all non-profit organizations are four functions: planning, budgeting, funding and management.
The four metaphors addressed on the article were fire, which represented ambition, snowball represented accountability, mask represented authenticity and finally movie represented self-reflection. This were ways that a leader could become more effective and analyses what is working both professionally and personally. Based on the 360-degree feedback the CEO’s received from their personal effectiveness, the company’s financial performance, approval from their customers and finally employee engagement. The metaphors in this article acted as a catalyst for change in their organizations (Fuda & Badham, 2011).
The studies failed to prove any positive correlations between workplace conditions and productivity. The results of the studies demonstrated that innate forces of human behavior may have a greater influence on organizations than do mechanistic incentive systems. The legacy of the Hawthorne studies and other organizational research efforts of that period began to emphasize the importance of individual and group interaction, humanistic management skills, and social relationships in the workplace.
The metaphor of an organism is seeking to portray the system where organizations adapt and survive in a changing environment. Morgan shows an important perspective on organizations that flow with change. Making the resemblance to an organic body, where systems are clusters of interconnected cells, in business, those cells are people connected to deliver on overall needs. With essentially four types or “species” in the organic
At least two different organizational structures are identified, described, and compared in terms of their design principles.
