In my life social structure plays an important role of creating order in society. This means that there is almost a certain a blueprint for how the world and its organisms operate. Social structure comes in various forms in my life such as the law, morals, education, family. The law is a social structure that establishes a sense of protection and safety by demonstrating that criminals will be punished. In addition, the deterrence effect of the law and enforcements is a powerful symbol on its own. This supports the social structure because it results in less criminal activity in the public. Although it sounds and is positive to a degree; it still involves the sacrifice of having freedom stripped away. This will be a focus of the paper where the double standard of social structure is valid, while making connections among Mills' notion of the Sociological Imagination, Berger and Luckmann's concept of Society as a Human Product, and Merton's Social Structure and Anomie theory. Much like the question of the assignment, Mills also focuses on getting the individual to both question and understand where they are located in the social structure in comparison with others. Essentially, the sociological imagination allows the individual to reach self-awareness within a social structure; after internalizing the potential of others within that social structure (Mills, p. 266). Although Berger and Luckmann, and Merton also focus on the social structures; Mills' concept differs because he is talking about the individual comprehending the bigger picture first by seeing where he/she is in the present moment, followed by recognizing the potential of others in the same situation.
