I have not yet worked in a school setting, but I have worked in several agencies and offices where collaboration with colleagues was present. One agency I have worked in was a domestic violence shelter, which housed up to forty-five women and children. In addition, we ran a twenty-four hour crisis hotline, provided individual and group counseling services, and educated those out in the community about domestic violence. It took a lot of collaboration with colleagues to have the agency run smoothly and effectively. When issues arose with clients staying in the shelter, my colleagues and I would met to discuss the issues and how we were going to work together to solve them. Together we were able to discuss all of these factors and agree upon …show more content…
I plan to meet frequently with other colleagues, especially those in the grade level I am teaching at, to discuss their lesson plans and what worked or didn't work, how they handle student behavior and discipline and any other ideas that would improve my skills as a teacher. Teachers working together will create that high achievement that is desired by all school administrators. I believe meeting every two weeks would allow frequent collaboration on issues regarding that grade level being taught. These skills will transfer over to a school environment with my students as well. Collaborating with students will be very important in order to help them succeed. I believe I had good communication skills, which well help me to build and maintain a positive relationship with my students. By allowing my students to give feedback on issues in the classroom, I will be able to adapt lessons or other structures to their needs. Mostly importantly, listening and speaking to my students with respect will be a key guideline in promoting collaboration in the school
According to Crittenden, and Lyons (2014), two areas setting high-performing schools apart from low performing schools is essentially collaboration and communication. I realize the importance of collaboration whether it be with a neighbor teacher, my grade-level teachers, or my content area teachers. In my school, we have scheduled meeting with each group of educators. It is my desire to see a more structured use of the time. Oftentimes, we attend one of these meetings and spend time complaining about students or parents. An improvement would be to better structure our time together as to be more productive. I believe that the administration should have an accountability system in place to insure time is utilize
The goal of the Pre-Health and Science Peer Mentors Program is to help first year African-American students with pre-health interests engage fully in the Washington University experience. As one of nine mentors, I was assigned multiple students and tasked with helping them maneuver through the myriad of challenges associated with entering Washington University. Even as the mentor, I found this experience valuable as it allowed me to reflect upon my past challenges and translate these experiences into advice while developing a community amongst other pre-medical minority students. I attended training meetings, and met with my mentees multiple times during the
As an experienced writer and copyeditor at a well known publishing company for 6 years my expertise will meet your departments needs and wants. As a Production Coordinator and Content Project Manager at Cengage Learning, coordinating revisions was one of my main job priorities. Attending team meetings for each book I worked on, going through revisions and drafts with my fellow team members and sending notes to the author on a regular basis on changes and updates that needed to be made. This was done on a weekly and bi-weekly basis depending on deadlines that needed to be met on our timeline. Organization and attention to detail is one of many strengths that I possess and is a critical attribute to doing my job. There is a lot of material
I was always apart of the musicals growing up because I loved how seamlessly an emotion could be displayed from a dialogue to a song. Once I attended high school, I discovered that I love mentoring almost as much as I love performing, so I made it my goal to achieve and earn any leadership opportunities that became available. I was chosen to be the only junior officer of the International Thespian program and I was elected chorus officer. But one thing I achieved that I did not expect to impact me as much as it did was selected to be apart of the peer mentor program. It was there where I learned what it truly meant to be a leader in my community. And it was also there where I was asked to help create a puppet program for 1st and 2nd grade
Wow! This first marking period flew by! It was long but also short, seemly taking a long time to get by but also breezing through like the wind through a flag. Every day at the beginning of class, we do this activity called Mentor Sentences. We read an excerpt of text and identify the figurative language or other writer’s craft in it and use that to write a sentence with those same techniques. I think that is has been really beneficial to me because I have combined certain strategies that I have not used that often. Every week we get syllabi, (which becomes a syllabus when you have a lot of them) and it outlines the week’s work for us. It’s really helpful because then you know all the due dates and you can work a little on each thing and you’ll get it all done. Each week we also have Root Words, where we take a root of a word, learn it’s meaning, find words with that root and that meaning and use them in sentences. Some examples of our root words are acou, which means hearing, aster, which means star and bibl, which means book. Remember that One Pager I made? Yes, that poster thing that I made and I furiously scribbled on it on the dinner table until I thought it looked okay. Mrs. Thompson hung them outside the classroom and lots of kids are up, and it was really cool to go out and look at all of them. This marking period, we held a dead verb funeral to bid them farewell from our writing. It was funny but also a little gloomy because of the poems that other students were
During my second preclinical experience at Westview Hills Middle School, I learned the importance of cooperation and collaboration among teachers at a school. I was able to observe team and department meetings during this experience. It became clear that it is important for teachers to work together in order to provide a positive atmosphere at a school and in a specific department. Although it became obvious that personalities and teaching styles were different throughout the school, the teachers still acted professionally and used each other as resources in
I had the opportunity to observe in a collaborative classroom during field observations for my EDUC 1301 class two years ago. In that school teachers usually worked collaborate to do lesson planning and instruction. For example, in the second grade that observed in, one teacher taught science and math and the other teacher taught language arts and social studies. I feel that collaborating with others can help teachers come up with more creative lessons for student and new strategies to teach the material. Also, dividing up the work, allows teachers to focus more on the subjects they are teaching and actually have more time to plan the lesson. On the other hand, I personally will dislike being in a collaboratively taught class if my partner
My progression as a mentor in the course has taught me how to become a better person overall, but more importantly helped the students whom I was mentoring. I believe the two best strengths which I have in this course working with the grade has been, my patience and my ability to give clear instructions. Some days while working with the students it can become frustrating due to their behaviours, but despite all of that I have always kept my calm and been patient with them. Although it can be seen as a negative thing to stay quiet, it has helped me become a better tutor. Sometimes Jordan acts out and he becomes very loud and fidgety, when I keep calm and talk to him in a mellow voice he calms down as well. Being patient with Jordan has gotten him to quiet down and focus on his work many times, which is relieving for me and important to his success. Another important strength which I have is the ability to clearly give instructions, if a student is confused about the wording of a question it can throw them completely off. When I give instructions or explain an assignment to the students, I make it as clear and simple as possible
The aim of this essay is to discuss on how the reflection on mentorship will be undertaken, how and why the model of reflection will be used and the importance of confidentiality. I will reflect the mentorship by ensuring that the mentee during clinical practice is put at ease throughout the learning experience of four weeks (Quinn, and Hughes 2007, p. 29). Also, I will use the principle of Kolb’s learning cycle as my model of reflection because reflecting is an essential element of learning. As I am the mentor, I will follow this cycle in a clockwise direction with Jude, so she would have to reflect on the skills learnt by reviewing the whole situation (Kolb’s learning cycle 1984 in Rose and Best 2005, p.129). This would enable Jude to
In the Navy and Marine Corps providing feedback and counseling to Sailors and Marines is a critical skill that every leader must possess. For this assignment, I was tasked with providing counseling and guidance to a struggling 3/C Midshipmen in my company on how they could improve in meeting the standards with regards to morally, mentally, and physically. For the counseling, I chose 3/C Burns who was struggling academically with a D at six weeks in Thermodynamics, a major course in his matrix. With this Midshipman struggling to meet the mission mentally, I was keen on attacking the issue before it developed into a major problem by providing advice, counseling, and a personal story of being in his place before.
At this stage of my career, it makes sense that I enroll in the Collegewide Leadership Development Program because I’ve performed many administration and management tasks such as, but not limited to: Chairing the collegewide AET/CMT curriculum redesign, provided leadership as President of the Faculty Senate for two years, acquired articulation agreements with senior institutions, and provided Blackboard and mentorship support to adjuncts.
Last year, I was a technology coach at Sherman Oaks Elementary. I conducted professional development regarding different technology tools to our staff. I also met with different grade levels, and individual teachers to draft lesson plans incorporating technology to enhance and revolutionized student learning. I have presented workshops at our Sherman Oaks University in English and Spanish to educate parents in regards to their child’s educational journey. I include topics that parents are interested in, and want to learn more about. I have also reached out and partnered up with organizations like the Bascom Library and Sacred Heart to serve the families in my school. I have been part of several focus groups. I worked with a district representative
My goal was to connect with the mentor, which did not happen as anticipated. After making several phone calls and sending messages via email I was able to get a response from Cameron Eggie from The Gateway Of Hope in Langley. I will be going for orientation at 10 AM on the 30th of May.
Collaboration between teachers is a key component to professional development that will lead to higher student achievement. There is a need for schools to set up time for teachers to be able to collaborate together. This allows for teachers to help each other, matchup content, teach each other new and best practices, troubleshoot student issues just to name a few of the areas that collaboration time can help foster within a school. The key is to build time for teachers to be able to collaborate during the school day or week. This collaboration time needs to be between grade levels, departments, and cross curricular when needed. For many schools this is an afterthought to the school schedule or a fleeting thought after the master schedule is completed. A principal needs to keep an open mind to any strategy that will enable the teachers to be able to collaborate for the good of the students and the school.
My senior year of high school I was a part of an organization called PALS, which stands for Peer Assistance Leadership Skills. In this organization you are a mentor to young kids in either elementary or middle school, these kids either have troubles at home, school, or any type of social problems. I was able to mentor 3 boys and it really changed my perspective on dealing with another persons feelings, and what’s going on in their lives.
