Mental illness in youths with severe depression has increased 2.3% in a 5 year period. That increase is able to fill every major league baseball stadium twice on the east coast. Fictional novels are a great way to tune in with a real world issue. In the novel, Where Things Come Back, the author, John Corey Whaley, highlights how death in close families or relationships can cause a mental disorder to the person. The school board should reconsider banning fictional literature from the curriculum because it allows students to experience real-world issues like mental illness, suicide and other extremely sensitive topics through a safe lens all while expanding their vocabulary. The central theme John Corey Whaley proclaims in the novel, Where Things …show more content…
Many fail to realize what can be a symptom or cause of a person's mental illness. In the article, “Mental Illness Is a Global Crisis”, the author, Michelle Chen writes, “Across the Global South, treating mental illness is less than a priority in communities that are often struggling just to provide adequate vaccination coverage, or to contain HIV infection”. Although containing infections is important, treating a mental disorder is a high priority as well. Seeking help for having a mental illness is hard to find today especially in lower income areas. With mental illness affecting 1 in 5 people, treatments for having a mental illness should be easier to obtain. Being that mental illness affects a high number of people, the world should have more accommodations that will help mental illness and not see it as unimportant. Another key point from, “Mental Illness Is a Global Crisis”, is that mental illness needs to be confronted by the culture and by natives that have the power to initiate and bring awareness th tho problem. “Although mental health is part of the United Nations global development agenda, it remains little more than a bullet point in poorer health-care systems…” That statement made in the article goes to show how the world recognizes that mental health is a global issue that needs help. Though the United Nations implemented an actual agenda for mental health, it seems that it has not …show more content…
Where Things Come Back, has shown in many ways how mental illness can affect a person and the people around them. In fact, Where Things Come Back, the author describes how a character hits a boy in the head and kidnaps him just so he doesn’t go on a date with his ex wife. The characters “destined” journey makes him crazy enough to kidnap a kid that’s not even the kid he wants to kidnap. Mental illness affects the brain in many ways that people would never think that this character would do such a thing. An article named “Mental Illness Is a Global Crisis, Not Just a Disease of Rich Nations“ states how little people really know about this issue. The article also states, “...that mental health is a serious issue and that people with mental illness and epilepsy should be treated the same way as people with other illnesses or diseases.” The issue of mental illness is ongoing and needs to spreaded. People need to be more educated in the problems going on in the world because one day it just might affect them as well. Fiction needs to be in the schools curriculum because it gives more opportunities for people who don't know about such a issue like mental illness to be informed in a much creative
Mental illness is nondiscriminatory, can affect any person and transcends all social boundaries. As a result, the issues surrounding mental illness have become common discussion pints among policymakers dedicated or required to formulate solutions around providing the long-term care needed by many patients. Healthcare reforms and changes to the systems that provide services to those living with mental illness and funding for services to the facilities providing care have become major social issues (Goldman, Morrissey, Ridgley, Frank, Newman, & Kennedy, 1992). The reason for this is primarily how it can affect a market economy and how much of a burden diseases of the mind can be in a country such as the United States. According to the 1991 Global Burden of Disease study conducted by the World Health Organization mental health burden accounted for “more than 15% in a market economy such as the U.S.” (The Impact of Mental Illness on Society, 2001). The study also states that for individuals over the age of 5, varying forms of depression are the leading cause of disability. A more recent study indicates that mental illness in general is found in more than 26% of the United States adult population, of which 6% are severe and limit the patient’s ability to function (Martin, p. 163. 2007).
According to the Unite for Sight organization, “In 2002, of the estimated 450 million people worldwide living with mental or behavioral disorders, 90 million were drug or alcohol dependent, 25 million suffered from schizophrenia, and 150 million had depression” (Unite for Sight). Mental illness is something that today’s media and government does not want to address, which is seen repeatedly in “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner. More and more people are being diagnosed with a mental illness and this trend needs to come to an end. People need to understand the various aspects of mental illness. While treatment of mental illnesses has improved over time, the effect they have on the individual and the people around them has not.
“40 percent of countries have no mental health policy” (Nullis). Ghana and other third world countries do not have the financial means to care for those with mental disabilities. This is due to the fact that they do not understand the seriousness behind these disorders, and see it as less of an epidemic then it truly is. Clare Nullis reported that “two thirds of countries spent 1 percent or less of their health budget on mental health, and half had only one psychiatrist per 100,000 people.” For most of these countries they either cannot afford to spend their budgets on taking care of the mentally challenged, or they do not understand how serious the problem actually is, and feel that their finances are better spent elsewhere. Mentally ill people all over the world are not being seen as human beings, who still possess the same rights and protections as everyone
The paper, written by Susan Hatters Friedman, MD, and Karen B. Rosenbaum, MD, analyzes how mental illness is portrayed in the movie "Joker." Although I am covering the video game, the Joker is portrayed the same in all of the pieces he is in. The film explores the origin story of the renowned Batman villain, the Joker, and shows how he changed from a troubled and marginalized person to the notorious criminal mastermind known for his crimes. It was released to widespread acclaim and controversy. The writers counter that despite being a powerful character study, the movie spreads false beliefs about mental illness.
Mental illness is a topic often used those who just do not quite fit in with how everyone acts. In literature, it is sometimes a device that can explain the actions of another. Mental illness however can be more than the urge to do something bizarre or act differently than the norms. It is something that is carried inside, often hidden, afraid to come out in the light of day. That is why it adds so much intrigue when it is introduced in a story.
One of the biggest contributors for poor healthcare is the stigma against mental health. This stigma allows healthcare providers to view those with a mental illness as having low relevance, thus creating disinclination towards providing adequate resources and/or care. This negative stance, based on misinformation and prejudice creates those that have a mental illness to lose their self confidence. Because of this loss, people with mental illness decide not to contribute to their health or livelihood. In the past fifty years, many advances have been made in mental healthcare. However, with the attached stigma, many people choose to not seek out treatment.
The lack of treatment for mental illnesses — due partly from the stigma with which it is associated with — comes with a number of public issues: economically,
Hollywood has always had a tendency to exaggerate things in all their movies. It can be from saying it’s based on a true story or even saying it’s the “number #1 movie in the America”, when in reality that’s what they call every new movie that comes out. Mental illness has always been a very touchy subject in the media. People don’t seem to feel comfortable talking about it but when it comes to making movies it doesn’t seem too hard. Mental illness in the movies is very rare to be found accurate or represented in a true way. What I mean by this is that Hollywood doesn’t necessarily depicts mental illness the way it truly is. In many movies, the person with mental illness may be the villain or the crazy character that everyone makes fun of.
It has been reported that the number of people with mental disorder is increasing in our communities at an alarming rate. Environmental and social changes are among the most mentioned causes of the accelerating rate of mental illness in society (Häfner, 1985). Despite the prevalence, about one fifth of the adult population will battle with mental illness every year ("Facts and figures about mental illness," 2014) and the acknowledgement of authorities mental illness is still given less attention then is needed to treat the problem successfully. Health bodies need to be putting more resources into this area as
The negative stigma of mental health has lightened slightly over the years, however, it has not rescinded entirely. People still have an unmanageable time admitting that they may have a mental disorder and that they require assistance. Human beings struggle with these hindrances openly and also hidden on a daily basis. Therefore, our civilization needs to remove the shame associated with the treatment of mental disorders and work on devising a progressive suitable mental healthcare plan in order to ensure that many live a healthy, happy, and prosperous
Although about 450 million people in the world currently are suffering from a mental illness, many untreated, the topic still remains taboo in modern society (Mental Health). For years, people with mental illnesses have been shut away or institutionalized, and despite cultural progression in many areas, mental illnesses are still shamed and rarely brought to light outside of the psychiatric community. The many different forms in which mental illness can occur are incredibly prevalent in the world today, and there is a substantial debate about the way that they should be handled. Some people are of the opinion that mental illness is merely a variance in perception and that it either can be fixed through therapy or should not be treated at
With so many diseases and medical conditions to take care of, mental health often takes last place on the list of priorities. Dementia, depression, post-traumatic stress and other disorders affect every country alike. While developing countries need to develop access to mental healthcare, developed nations will need to improve their current facilities. Most westernized nations are experiencing a gradual aging of their population. As the populations aid, mental health will need more mental health professionals in place to handle their care.
Everyone is different in society. There are special individuals, which are affected by mental health illnesses. Mental health issues can affect society both negatively and positively. There are cultures that treat these individuals like the reincarnations of gods. On the other side, there are cultures that isolate these individuals and look for cures to these pathologies. Mental health illnesses are important because they have to be studied to understand their cause, whether it may be biological or environmental. These issues are important because like every type of illness they have to be delicately studied, focusing on treatments to either cure them or reduce the symptoms of the pathology. These people were either conflicted with the ideals of society or they were praised by it. Cultures, which didn’t accept them, closed them up into asylums. Patients inside these facilities were brutally used as guinea pigs for their experiments. The way these people were treated shows how cruel and ignorant people were to the unknown. By learning from histories mistakes we can move forward in improving our society and achieve greatness.
When people are mentally ill, they suffer social stigma, have higher health costs, and are at an increased risk of becoming poor. Every one out of five Americans is diagnosed with a mental illness. That 20 percent of the population can negatively influence the normal stresses of life, working productively and fruitfully, and being able to make a contribution the community. When humankind as a whole cannot recognize that mental illness is a serious issue, there is more harm being done than good. Any kind of mental illness can be caused merely by society, but also can worsen due to humanity not understanding how injustice can make a serious impact. The mental health problems that people face can be limited to society learning about the injustice of these illnesses.
Mental health—and the stigma that comes along with it—is a very important issue, one of global importance. Shah and Beinecke explain that 450 to 500 million people suffer from mental illnesses (15). Just considering the amount of people who suffer from mental illness is enough to prove that this is a global issue. Despite the large amounts of people who are affected by mental illness, only one third of countries have some sort of program to help (15). This shows the lack of concern for those who suffer from mental illness. Stereotypes affect many people, and those with mental illness are no exception. Everyone has their own preconceived perspectives and notions of mental health, and many of them are uninformed and unjustified. It is up to us to start changing our viewpoints on mental health.
