With the prevention of mental disorders “To prevent” plainly means “to keep something from happening”. The World Health Organization defines health promotion as “the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve their health” (WHO, 2002). Prevention main concern is avoiding illness while promotion is about improving health and well-being. A mental health promotion intervention that is aimed at increasing well-being in a community may have the outcome of decreasing the occurrence of mental disorders. Mental health promotion efforts are believed to reduce weakness to a disorder and sometimes prevent a disorder.
Prevention and promotion are two topics that are in relation to showing reinforcement. Prevention targets individuals
A mental health counselor is a counseling professional, whose duties involves helping individuals cope with difficult life events, managing mental illnesses, and referring patients to additional resources that can help them. Before they can start counseling, they need to follow their states specific requires. For instance, in Louisiana, one has to obtain a master’s degree from an accredited program, have the required hours of supervised practice and coursework, and pass the National Counselor Examination to be licensed and certified. In addition to receiving a license in this field, an individual has to complete an addition 40 hours of continuing education every year to renew their license. The Mental Health Counseling program, offered at Capella, would satisfy most, if not all, of the licensure requirements in Louisiana.
For the purpose of this essay the author sought to explore PDSA cycle and identified health promotion in mental health patients as an area for service improvement. It is evident that the life of patients suffering from psychosis, mood and behaviour disturbances is failing. Tranter et al (2012), Happell et al (2013) and Robinson and Potts (2014) suggest that these patients suffer from various physical health conditions such as coronary heart disease, respiratory problems, diabetes and cancers which consequently leads to a reduced life expectancy of 10 -20 years compared to the general population. According to Tranter et al (2012) there are three types of interventions which can be used to improve the health and wellbeing of patients suffering from mental illness. They are assessment of physical health, health education or promotion and multimodal interventions. Roberts and Bailey (2013) suggested that adherence and engaging individuals with these interventions is a major
The healing hands health rights campaign is an initiative by ANTaR which was launched in February 2004. The campaign itself is an effective way of promoting health as a fundamental human right issue, raising awareness of political will and promoting the need for a change in policy so that resources are allocated on the basis of indigenous health. The development of the campaign and the various tactics employed have enabled the issues of indigenous health rights to come to light as a serious matter amongst the general public, political parties, organisations, media etc. The campaign and the information kits readily available are a practical way of promoting the
The article I chose to review is Research Opportunities in the Area of Mental Health Promotion, Prevention, and Intervention for Children and Youth. I first found this article through AJOT and I realized I had been given this issue through a family friend, so I referred to it from then on. This AJOT issue was from September/October of 2014. After reading through the article, I realized that there was an additional article with further information. There was a systematic review that occurred before the actual evidence based practice research. There is also a book available through AOTA called Occupational Therapy Practice Guidelines for Mental Health Promotion, Prevention, and Intervention for Children & Youth that can also be referred too.
One example of politics and health promotion includes mental health reform. The issue is highly polarized and, although support for the issue can be found on both sides of the partisan line, the motives for wanting reform are very different. Most often mental health reform is discussed when the subject of mass killings is in the spotlight. With gun violence so often discussed, the conversation is shifting from gun laws to mental health programs.
“Mental health services are designed to promote and maintain mental health, prevent mental illness, and treat and
There are two types of reinforcement; positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement. Positive reinforcement strengthens the behavior through positive stimulus and includes a positive reinforcer, which causes the behavior to
Mental health counseling programs are designed to prepare individuals/students to help clients with conflicts, personal problems, or emotional predicaments. Mental Health counseling has become a wide area of study that is highly recommended to those who are unbalanced and in need of support. Effective clinical mental health counselors acknowledge the differences amongst people and seek to improve their ability to work with diverse people (Gladding el at., 2010). This is very important, especially for counselors to be culturally diverse and to develop multicultural counseling competencies to be effective.
Abstract: The article highlights the problem and the barriers that associated with recruiting older minority populations into mental health research studies. The main focus of this research is to inform the administrators and policymakers, the best way to care for the mentally ill and how to improve mental health service in older minority. According to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, (2001) and Fellin and Powell, (1988), “the mental health services by older minority have been an important issues for congress, national institutes of health, and the numerous professional organizations, however, there had been no changes in the older mental ill population”. The low-income older minority populations are higher than middle class
The nationwide health promotion and disease prevention plan, Healthy People 2020, recognizes that mental health promotion and mental health reduction as one of the most significant health objectives. Statistic indicated that mental health disorders are the leading cause of disability in United States and Canada, while suicide is the 11th leading cause of death that killed approximately 30,000 American each year (“Mental Health and Mental Disorders”, n.d.). The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has commended series of guideline once patients are identified with mental health disorder.
Mental health has always been identified as one of the main areas for action in the National Health Priority Areas (National Health and Medical Research Council 2016), and depression is one of the most prevalent chronic conditions amongst the young Australians (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare 2017). Depression is a debilitating condition that substantially impairs individuals’ ability to function and cope with their daily life due to the experience of negative feelings (NHMRC 2016). Also, depression and suicidality have a close correlation as eighty percent of reported suicide incident was due to the burden of depression (World Health Organization 2017), and suicide is the second leading cause of death in youths in Australia (Reddy 2010). Moreover, depression can be inherited in a family through either biological or psychological way (Rahman et al. 2008); hence, youths who have the family with depression history tend to be more vulnerable and have a higher chance to get depression comparing with children from healthy family (Rice 2010). Therefore, this expo is set up for raising community awareness in the burden of depression and reducing the growth of emotional and developmental dysfunction in youths and their families through providing a comprehensive research study in related the health problem and proven intervention strategies.
The treatment and prevention of mental illness can be difficult, and as with physical illness, no case or result is the same for everyone. Treatment varies for each illness, as well as for individual client needs and level of severity. With the numerous choices of treatment available today, people around the world have a greater chance at not only preventing or decreasing mental illness, but also the opportunity to enhance their mental health through the public health model of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.
I believe the best health promotion theory used for mental health is the theory of planned behavior. The planned behavior theory is essential in the process of the change of individual behavior and their mental state. The theory makes the assumption that the actions portrayed by individuals are as a result of their intentions. In return, these intentions affect the people's beliefs. According to the planned behavior theory, the behavior portrayed by human beings is dependent on the following considerations: their perceived consequences of the particular behavior they portray, the overall expectations of other involved people, and their held beliefs regarding the presence for other factors with the ability to prevent the overall performance
With seven billion people in the world, healthcare and healthcare infrastructure are increasingly important. Public health professionals are currently focusing on the following five topic areas to improve global health. By ensuring that everyone can have access to adequate care, the healthcare community can reduce premature mortality rates and the severity of epidemics.
Telepsychology is a relatively new development within the field of mental health service. The American Psychological Association defines it as the “provision of psychological services using telecommunication technologies. . . Telecommunication technologies include but are not limited to telephone, mobile devices, interactive videoconferencing, email, chat, text, and Internet (e.g., self-help websites, blogs, and social media).”(2016). Within the general category of telepsychology, psychological services that are delivered via the internet are referred to as “e-therapy”, “itherapy”, “cybertherapy”, and other similar names. E-therapy is a natural extension of our technological advancement, the growth of psychology as a field, and our ever increasing
