Many Americans assume that the concept of actually forming the melting pot ideology in America would be easy to obtain, that combining various cultures wouldn’t be that much of a challenge. However, an attempt to completely bring this ideology into society can cause problems among the population. With the rising tension between races in America with recent events, such as the race riots in Ferguson, Missouri, trying to incorporate different aspects of cultures would cause an explosion of hate crimes and racism due to the differences between them. The Melting Pot culture is one where several different cultures come together and adopt other parts into one single society. In Pozner’s Essay “Ghetto Bitches, China Dolls, and Cha Cha Divas” uses models on the television show America’s Next Top Model as examples to reveal that the casting and the scripting of show is racially unequal, and how they stereotype certain ethnicities. Gina, a Korean American contestant from the show, was used as an example to show that the producers felt that she should “choose whether she was ‘more’ tied to her ethnicity or her nationality” (Pozner 398). The show implied that trying to have aspects of her life be from both cultures together is not being a true American. This also shows that the producers and the judges don’t feel like t Examples like this can cause tension between these “real Americans” and those wanting to be considered an American yet maintain their culture. It can also cause conflict within themselves for trying to choose between wanting to be an “ American” and what their ethnicity is. This can make them feel like there is an imaginary standard of what and who “real Americans” are suppose to …show more content…
Pozner writes “The Lubriderm photo shoot illustrates how the advertising industry’s long-held racial essentialism influences the depiction of people of color in product placement- driven reality TV.” This quote shows that the media, like the photo shoot, will put people in situations that portray them in a stereotypical manner for the sake of a profit. Also, Television Shows, like America’s Next Top Model, will use the stereotypes in each race to cause the drama shown. This promotes the idea that a certain race is going to act a certain way, and may make someone or a certain race feel like they are in a box and are suppose to behave in a particular manner according to the stereotypes. This can create a divide among the different cultures due to the feeling that they behave in certain ways, such as the angry black woman or the spicy latina. The equivalent of these television shows happens in movies and social media with how they portray the certain stereotypes. Television shows and movies have the ability change and decide to break away from the stereotypes that they use , instead of promoting the drama coming from that. However, the issue of making that change is the ratings may decrease dramatically because their audiences are accustomed to a certain level of drama and
There was a time when America was segregated; Caucasians and African Americans were forced to attend different restrooms, restaurants, and water fountains. However, the era of segregation has been terminated; now America embraces and appreciates the various cultures and ethnicities that create this melting pot several people call home. Likewise, it is this melting pot, or mosaic, of races that multitudes of individuals have identified themselves with. Thus, race and ethnicity does matter for it portrays vital and crucial roles in the contemporary American society. Furthermore, ethnicity and race brings communities together in unity, determines which traditions and ideals individuals may choose to value, and imposes an impediment for it categorizes humans unjustly.
Known to many as the ‘melting pot,’ the United States consists of a variety of cultures and peoples. Immigrants from near and far traveled and continue to do so for economic opportunities or to escape persecution. One particular group of people who immigrated to the United States were the Filipinos or Pinoys, as some like to call themselves. Due to its 400-year colonization by Spain and the United States, the Filipino American populace increased after the Philippines became a territory under U.S. control. The last Asiatic group to migrate to the United States, the Filipinos have contributed to the American society through a variety of occupations, such as sailors or nannies. Moreover, the U.S. colonization of the Philippines from
America was widely known as a “melting pot” of sorts for many generations. The country earned its title by accepting immigrants of various cultures and molding, or melting, them into the American lifestyle. However, the “melting pot” idea of America is starting to dissipate. According to a Newsweek Poll on the public, “only 20 percent still think America is a melting pot” (Morganthau and Wolfberg, par.4). As more Americans push away immigrants and create stereotypes against said immigrants, America continues to lose its title as a “melting pot.” There is ethnic friction in America and people have begun to have a hard time assimilating (Morganthau and Wolfberg, par.18). .America is beginning to place a negative outlook on its
During the process of producing a television series, the demand for the producers to introduce their characters with only their highlighted traits make it impossible for viewers to gain a deep understanding of the community that the characters represent. One of the stereotypic traits that is usually seen on movies and television shows is societal difference that each race is placed into. Michael Omi in his article In Living Color: Race and American Culture stated that “in contemporary television and film, there is a tendency to present and equate racial minority groups and individuals with specific social problems” (546). There are many films and television shows found today that ground racial minorities into a specific social problems that are related to the color of their skin. It can be inferred from the current popular culture that this stereotype still persists.
The United States of America was founded on July 4, 1776. Seeking a life free of the British Government, a host of immigrants founded a new nation. Because the United States was created by the migration of people from various parts of the world, it is sometimes described as a “melting pot.” Along with their personal possessions, these immigrants brought their respective cultures and traditions as they meshed together into a new society. Despite being categorized together as citizens of the same country, the independent traditions and lifestyles of humankind have created challenges throughout history. It is important for Americans to share a sense of pride, patriotism and loyalty. Equally important, however, is the need for respect regarding differences and individualism. Ethnocentrism is a barrier between understanding culture and diversity.
America is a melting pot made up of people from many different races and ethnic backgrounds, so why are the American news broadcasters predominantly white men in their late forties? News represents the American society so therefore American broadcasters should reflect society as a whole. In addition, many people consider news anchors role models and it is important to see themselves represented and trust their news source. The lack of diversity among newscasters impacts the audience’s reception of the news. People are more likely to trust news sources that they relate to and identify with. Many people do not even notice the lack of diversity or understand the impact it has on society. There needs to be more of an effort to reflect diversity among our newscasters to correct the history of discrimination, to accurately reflect the audience and to provide role models and promote positive images.
When I first read our assignment, my thoughts were that this is going to become a difficult task for me because I am someone that appreciates every culture. I am amazed that the United States is called the melting pot and some people do not realize why we are called the melting pot and the reason for the United States being called the melting pot is because our country is unique in comparison to other nations. When researching, what is a melting pot I found the perfection definition and the definition for melting pot is “A melting pot is a metaphor for a society where many different types of people blend as one. America is often called a melting pot.” Some countries that have become created by individuals who are almost all the same regarding
It's now safe say that america is a melting pot(a place where different people, styles, theories, etc., are mixed together). The united state is a place where different race and people culture. But even though the u.s is a melting pot there are still many prejudice and poor opinion about other races that may not always have the best opinion about other races or their beliefs. this can be seen by the way people think about Muslims. By the way people view the Muslim people with hatred remarks, or even hate crime that even may lead to death. But people always feel like Muslims are the problems in the united state today.
First, African Americans are rarely seen in the modeling industry. This creates a mental picture in the public mind that lighter pigmented women are more beautiful; thus creating social segregation amongst people based on ethnicity. African American models have difficulty getting signed to companies because of their ethnicity. To prove, Chanel Iman, a Victoria’s Secret Angel, admits that it is difficult for her to find modeling opportunities because she gets rejected many times. They often tell her “we already found one black girl. We don’t need you anymore” (2013). This demonstrates how society norms are reinforced through the modeling industry because it tells the public what certain people are able to achieve in life based on their ethnicity.
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary ethnocentrism is characterized by or based on the attitude that one's own group is superior, similarly Hunt-Hurst and Miller-Spillman (2012) define ethnocentrism as judging people from other cultures and backgrounds by one’s own cultural standards and beliefs (p. 10).
Some of the problems we face in the world today are an obvious ethnocentrism in media coverage and the world war on terrorism. Along with this, I think we have a problem with the current education system for children. By focusing on the way our children are educated, we could change the way the world is. By studying ancient cultures and learning from their lifestyles we can come up with solutions to these problems.
We can see a large example of this pattern of thinking when it comes to the popular melting pot theory, a metaphor often used to describe the United States as a fusion of different cultures into one harmonious, single culture. However, many modern activists and sociologists have challenged this metaphor, arguing that this it is a problematic and misguided attempt at solving racist sentiments. In an article from the Ecologist, a news journal that has led numerous political and social discussions over the environment, it further details the logic behind the monocultural view point and western globalization,“This world-view assumes that it was the chaotic diversity of cultures, values and beliefs that lay behind the chaos and conflicts of the past: that as these differences are removed, so the differences between us will be
In today's society, this generation is separated into different categories or groups based on race, civilization, religious belief, appearance or personality. Race is viewed and treated in today’s society based on societal perceptions which leads to perceived and actual stereotypes about a specific subspecies. An individual's personal opinion about one person in a certain race dictates their reflection of that entire ethnicity and race and their reflection about their own experience or ideas about certain races create expectations for processing and viewing others a certain way.
The United States of America has been categorized by many individuals as the “melting pot.” The nation has acquired this name because is a country that is made up of an extensive variety of people from different cultures. Every single individual whose living in the United States is different in some way or another depending on their culture. This term is primarily used to describe a wide cultural diversity. Besides the meaning of the melting pot, the discrimination in the United States has been an issue regarding race and gender. A book published in 2011 by Marsha Coleman-Adebayo called No Fear: A Whistleblower's Triumph over Corruption and Retaliation at the EPA explains how the term of the melting pot has been an obstacle for her in the work environment. Throughout the book, Coleman-Adebayo narrates that she was seen as an inferior person at the EPA because of her ethnicity. In the first chapter of her book, she described that her supervisor treated her differently because of her skin color. Alan Sielen, Coleman-Adebayo’s supervisor, reiterates that when he jokingly says, “Come on in, Marsha. Well, make you an honorary white man so you can join us” (9). This proves how racial prejudice exists in today’s world and how she struggles to be treated on the same level as her white male coworkers. The myth of the melting pot has been rejected throughout the book for the behavior towards Coleman-Adebayo; her ethnicity and gender appears to be the principal cause of mistreatment
If you could only describe America in three words, what would they be? America can be defined as a lot of words. Diverse, patriotic, and entertaining are all ways that America can be defined as. People may argue about this opinion, but that’s all it is, an opinion. With different people coming in America, comes a diverse country. With people who stayed through all America has gone through, comes a patriotic country. With different things around the world you can do, makes it an entertaining country. Ur mom
