When regarding ancient and medieval architecture, the powerful influence of religion is very imminent throughout the various time periods and different styles of architecture. History of architecture is associated more with buildings driven by religion than with any other category, because in most past civilizations, the consistent and distinguished appeal of religion made the church or temple the most symbolic, the most stable, and the most powerful building in any city. Throughout human history, religion has been the inspiration for magnificent works of philosophy, literature, art, and architecture. Throughout history in ancient Europe, sacred traditions were symbolized, expressed and preserved in places of worship and pilgrimage. Though there are many examples that support this argument, the mortuary complex of King Zoser in ancient Egypt, the Parthenon of ancient Greece, the Pantheon of Italy, the Hagia Sophia of the Byzantine Empire, and the Notre Dame Cathedral of Paris reign supreme in exemplifying the architectural practice driven by the influence of religion.
In Ancient Egypt, pyramids were monumental tombs built for the kings, but more importantly, the great pyramids were also fundamental to the religious beliefs of Egyptian culture and society. In the ancient Egyptian culture, death of the king was not a termination of life but rather, on the contrary, the potential of beginning of a new form of existence. The kings held an exclusive position, described between
They expressed a worldwide view of the Egyptians. First of all, they were symbols of the pharaoh's authority and divine status. It reflects hierarchical status. In the Egyptian society there were slaves, the commoners, the pharaohs. If you were to put them in order the top of the pyramid would the pharaohs below them the commoners, then slaves and so forth. The most important one would be on the top which is the pharaohs. Also, it was a testimony of the pharaoh's ability to marshal Egypt's resources. Their worldview was very religious too. Pyramids were used for tombs for pharaohs. The pyramids were a symbol of a gateway of the next life meaning that the people put to rest in a pyramid had somehow gained the opportunity at immortality. The things left inside the pyramid, such as vases and artwork, buried with the body were things that the Egyptians thought the pharaoh could bring with them to the afterlife. This brought another meaning to having a pyramid. It was used as a place to keep the pharaoh’s things for his second life. Also, pyramids were designed to have a temple which shows that the pharaohs were believed to be divine beings and they were to be worshiped after their
Religion has played a huge role in the history of the world of architecture. We can get a deeper look in the minds and attitudes of people when we look at their beliefs – specifically their religion. But even though religion played a huge role in the approach to architecture, the pursuit of beauty and power can also explain to us the approaches and the outlooks of those who built or designed buildings from the ancient world.
These large stone structures were built as tombs for kings that died. The Egyptians who built the pyramids needed to learn the specialized skills of mathematics, geometry, engineering, and architecture, as stated in document three.

The majority of ancient Egyptian structures studied by architectural historians and planners alike, were erected to honor a pharaoh or as a grand tomb for their journey through to the afterlife. Whether the structure was in the form of a temple, tomb or statue, the ritual and spiritual influence is unquestionable. The location, scale, and materials used to construct these monuments are all defining factors of how the space is used and functions.
The pyramids of Giza are perhaps even more well known than the Egyptian's hieroglyphics. These wondrous structures are thought to be based around the culture of the dead. A paragraph from Emmet John's The Pyramid Age describes these structures as such; “.. from the point of view of orthodox chronology, are the mastaba-tombs [pyramids] replaced. Similar to those used in Egypt.. they were a preferred type of funerary structure..” ( Emmet John 45). Mastaba's are flat roofed structures with sloping sides and are used as tombs within Ancient Egyptian. They were also the final resting place for most Egyptian people, and pyramids were used mainly for the wealthy or those that had some significance within the Egyptian culture. Pyramids are mastabas stacked onto one another, getting smaller as they reach the top. People have thought that the main reason for pyramids was simply

Anthropologists can generally conclude that ancient Egyptians strove for immortality and that their beliefs of transcendence were extremely important to them, given burial sites, tomb art, and various extensive ancient texts. Pyramid texts illustrate deliberate assurance to the deceased that physical death was solely an illusion, thereby insinuating that the actual death

The Middle Ages, also known as the Medieval era, though scarred with a history of violence and war, has given the world some of the most marvelous and beautiful pieces of art, particularly in architecture. The Middle Ages is the name given to the time period from the late 5th century to the 15th century, particular to European history. The construction of these types of buildings was a constant for various cultures for a thousand years. They can be categorized into three phases; Pre-Romanesque, Romanesque and Gothic. According to Egyptian and Sumerian mythology, there was a battle between two families of gods for supremacy and control over the ancient lands and the pyramids of Giza were strategic strongholds for the gods. (vi) The different shafts and chambers of the great pyramids are said to point to various constellations that represent several Egyptian gods. (vii) It is also thought by some that the pyramid may have been a place where Egyptians made a pilgrimage to honor the gods or their pharaoh who, according to legend was a descendent of the gods. As my artifact, I intend to describe how I organize notes in my personal digital notebook organizing system - Evernote. I will describe my current taxonomy that has since taken over my previous organizing system. Needless to say that 202 thinking has a played a big role in the overhauling my previous organizing structure.
Much of the pyramids history is on the inside. One of the many things inside of the pyramids are (sometimes also known as mummies) are the bodies of the pharaohs. When pharaohs died in Ancient Egypt, they were believed to become gods. In order to properly put them at rest, they had to do a proper burial. To do this, people has to take out every organ of the body except for the heart. The heart is told to hold the soul, so they couldn’t remove it. After this, they stuff the body with cloth and sew the skin up. They put chemicals on the body to dry it out, and set for 40 days. The body was then covered in oils, precious stones, and amulets and bound with longs strips of cloth over and over again. A highly decorated mask was set on the face and wrapped again in cloth. This whole process took about 70
