Imagine a simplistic world without curiosity. No questions are asked, so no answers are given. Experiences like confusion and misunderstanding do not happen. A world like that is akin to mediocrity. That world would be a very bland world. Fortunately, the world today is nothing like that of the world described. Advancements in technology and culture were derived from curiosity. People wanted to know why things worked and how they could improve upon them to do better. Other occurrences came about from misunderstandings. One such example is the Meat Inspection Act of 1906 passed by President Roosevelt. “The law authorized inspectors from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to stop any bad or mislabeled meat from entering interstate and foreign commerce” (“BRIA”). This act came about due to the response from Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle. Although mentioned, the horrors of the …show more content…
Composing mostly of immigrants, workers muscled through long brutal hours with little pay. However, it was not just men who worked, women and children also worked in these awful conditions. Workers faced the constant spread of disease, such as cholera and pneumonia, due to the tight spaces they all worked in together. Loosing a finger due to dermatoconiesis was also not uncommon. Dermatoconiesis is the technical term for an infection that is caused from overexposure to handling cold meat with bare hands (Cornwell). Workers dubbed it “pickle hands” (Cornwell) because pickling of the meats was the most common way of obtaining the infection. Yet another skin infection workers had to be wary of getting was tubular wart, which they called “cut worm” (Cornwell). “Cut worm came from handling hog intestines. Large warts grew rapidly on the workers hands and split open and developed into ulcers” (Cornwell). The workers still did not have gloves when this would occur, which would only further the contamination of meat
Most factories had issues with diseases like scarlet fever, measles, small poxs, and many more. These diseases were usually brought by immigrants coming from other countries looking for work. Immigrants usually acquired these diseases from spending a few weeks on cramped ships with lack of nutrition, spoiled food, bad ventilation, and improper waste disposal. When the diseases reached factory workers they quickly spread.
Many slaves worked in very unsanitary areas with many illnesses spreading around from place to place. Very few had a good percentage of surviving these rough conditions (“Diseases…”). Some even
2. Progressives believed that government should protect the people and promote the social welfare of people through which means?
In the early twentieth century, at the height of the progressive movement, “Muckrakers” had uncovered many scandals and wrong doings in America, but none as big the scandals of Americas meatpacking industry. Rights and responsibilities were blatantly ignored by the industry in an attempt to turn out as much profit as possible. The meat packers did not care if poor working conditions led to sickness and death. They also did not care if the spoiled meat they sold was killing people. The following paper will discuss the many ways that rights and responsibilities were not being fulfilled by the meat packing industry.
The Meat Inspection Act of 1906 was an attempt to regulate the meatpacking industry and to assure consumers that the meat they were eating was safe. In brief, this act made compulsory the careful inspection of meat before its consummation, established sanitary standards for slaughterhouses and processing plants, and required continuous U.S. Department of Agriculture inspection of meat processing and packaging. Yet, the most important objectives set by the law are the prevention of adulterated or misbranded livestock and products from being commercialized and sold as food, and the making sure that meat and all its products are processed and prepared in the adequate sanitary and hygienic conditions (Reeves 35). Imported meat and its various
Also to these horrific diseases was the tropical ulcer. Tropical ulcer was very common at the Changi camp. A small cut or abrasion on the ankle would rapidly accelerate and become infected. Cutting of slough was done using sharpened spoons (without anaesthetic), and innovative treatments such as maggots or even river fish were used. Amputation was often needed, it was a very painful but necessary exercise used for many POWS.
Curiosity will help people think of solutions to problems and can promote higher level thinking. One notable example can be found in Homer’s epic poem, “The Odyssey,” Odysseus takes twelve of his men to the cave where the Cyclops resides“A wineskin full I brought along, and victuals in a bag, for in my bones I knew some towering brute would be upon us soon” (Homer 153 155). This example displays that Odysseus was being curious since he went to the Cyclops' cave without knowing what he would find. Even though he was being selfish and only got himself into trouble they still took some sheep from the Cyclops. The sheep that they took from the Cyclops helped them run out of food slower.
28th Amendment: The 28th amendment requires labeling on all produce that is genetically engineered and products that contain Genetically Modified Organisms’ (GMO’s).
Curiosity is a powerful attribute; it is comparable to a broken compass alternately pointing north, a broken compass guides you in a different direction. Usually a regular working compass tells you go North to find home, or your location. But this powerful compass points the opposite. Usually pointing towards light, acknowledgement, something contemporary. Societal norms, repress the average citizen to acknowledge their surrounding, that’s how they remain a society. “Curiosity killed the cat.” Your mother tells you. It is how she was conditioned to think; only naturally she passes it on to her young, who are at the peak of curiosity.
When people think of the cow that their burger comes from, they think of a peaceful, fenced-in field with cows grazing lazily. In reality that beef comes from a cow who is forced to eat something it cannot digest, in a cramped, loud feedlot, covered in feces. Big business has worked hard to hide the reality of food origin. The American government should create legislation that would eliminate this problem. Research is being done with invitro meat, otherwise known as lab grown meat. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) should approve invitro meat for human consumption. Animal cruelty caused by the farming industry and large companies is a huge problem that can be avoided with scientific advancements in lab grown meat.
Curiosity led to intellectual
Although this shined a light on the issues, I wanted to aim “at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach." I had attempted point out how badly the animals were treated by workers, rather than the sanitation of the workplace. To reveal the harsh reality Chicago’s famous industry, Jurgis becomes the “shoveler of guts” and through his time there, he witnessed the horrendous state at which men were in labor – their fingers cut off due to working with knives in speed up assembly lines, workers with skin diseases in the pickling room, working in areas with no light or ventilation, and men carrying 100 pound meat and breaking their backs. The company scammed the laborers by making the assembly line faster to get more work out of the men for the same pay. Furthermore, sanitation of the workplace was an immense issue. Many men had tuberculosis and coughed blood, onto the floor, and with no area to urinate, many did it in a corner and did not wash their hands after doing so. With all that being said, the meat was dumped into the same floor where all of this occurred, usually also accumulating dead rats and their
The meat industry today is not what it was nearly a century ago. While improvements are thought to have been made, an ever changing society has brought upon new problems that have been piled on to the previously existing ones. While these problems are not like those found in The Jungle, they do parallel how by exposing what is going on in the meat industry; new regulations would be the answer to the noted problems. The increased demand for meat has made it a rushed mutated production instead of a means to raise livestock for consumers. Taking into consideration the demand for cheap meat that will be used for in quick and high demanded products such as frozen and fast food, this demand of meat has greatly skyrocketed. Animals whose sole
Food Handler Certification is the best way to boost up my resume and learn about safety hazards. I learn about Food hazardous as related to food safety is conditioned or contaminants that can cause illness or injury. Food-borne is a disease, carried or contracted by eating contaminated food. With my new knowledge in my life was able to learn more about food hazardous and Food-borne illness.
Why is there war? Why is there racism? Why must almost all disputes be solved via violence? Why, why, why. It is in human nature to question, and to be curious. As well as abhorring anything that is different from what society defines as “normal”. Society abhors anything unusual. Honestly, many things puzzle me, as well as the rest of the human race for the most part. Whether it be the existence of paranormal entities, which has boggled the world for millennia, or the meaning of life. Some things will remain unanswered, while for some the answer might be closer than humanity thinks. Forrest Gump sums up life in one short quote, “Life is like a box of chocolates.” You don’t know what you’ll get, until you try it. If only humanity could work
