Most of humanity listens to music for the beats, but how many listen for the meanings of these songs? There can be songs with a happy message, or there can be depressing message. Colors by Halsey and I Hate You I Love You by Gnash have a remarkable message that make them similar and different.
In the same way, Colors and I Hate You I Love You have a similar meaning in heartbreaks. “Everything is blue. His pills, his hands, his jeans. And now I'm covered in the colors. Pull apart at the seams. And it's blue. Everything is grey. His hair, his smoke, his dreams. And now he's so devoid of color. He doesn’t know what it means. And he's blue” This song lyric is from Colors and this explains how ‘He’ was blue and she is now covered with him, meaning

“You were red, and you liked me because I was blue. But you touched me, and suddenly I was a lilac sky. Then you decided purple just wasn't for you” This is a song lyric from Colors and it demonstrates in the beginning of any relationship the significant other is on their best behavior, but after they get comfortable their significant other their true ‘colors’ start to show. Halsey told SiriusXM her song is about being in a relationship with someone and kind of watching the vibrancy slowly start to leak out of them, watch the colors start to fade or any sort of negative behavior that’s kind of taking them away from the bright and lively person that they used to be. You can kind of see them start to fade to gray, and you wish you had them back the way that they used to be. “When love and trust is gone, I guess this is moving on” This song lyric is from I Hate You I Love You and it shows when there is nothing left it is time to move on, even if you don’t want to. This song is split by two artists, a female and a male, which the female hurt the male emotionally to the point where she was done. Even though these might be different meaning songs, they are still a tremendous
When writing a book authors like to use colors and symbols to describe and help make the story. In most books color is used a lot in the story to describe things from the sky to people's clothes. The Book Thief use color theory very often. Color Theory says that people will judge a character on the environment and what colors are in the environment(“Color Theory“). We are told the color of the sky when the main narrator Death is doing his job. He does not like his job so he uses colors to distract him from taking people's souls. Death says that he looks at the sky when he is doing his job, "I do try to enjoy every color I see - the whole spectrum. A billion or so flavors, none of them quite the same, and a sky to slowly suck on. It takes the edge off the stress," (Zusak 4). The color of the sky when someone dies had a lot of meaning behind the color. In the Book Thief, the colors are red, blue, black show up in the book the most.
In particular, the color blue symbolizes the disappointment in his life. F. Scott Fitzgerald utilizes the color blue to act as a symbol of the disillusioned, lonely lifestyle Jay Gatsby lives. The appearance of the color blue in certain aspects of Gatsby’s life reveals Gatsby’s inner loneliness. In the beginning of the book, Gatsby throws large, extravagant parties at his house in hopes that Daisy will arrive.
F. Scott Fitzgerald uses colors to symbolize emotion throughout the novel. An example would be when Nick was observing Gatsby’s house the day of the party, “In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne, and the stars.” (39 Fitzgerald) The gardens represent Gatsby himself. Like his gardens Gatsby puts in a lot of effort into himself to look good, he makes it known that he has a ridiculously lavish lifestyle. Therefore how he feels is how the house is going to appear, in this case the gardens appear blue because he hasn’t met his long lost lover, Daisy, yet and that causes him to be really sad and depressed. The blue also represents how lonely he feels because he doesn’t have many friends and his efforts to try and reach/ meet Daisy again haven’t given him results. Color was also used to show emotion when Gatsby and NIck returned to West Egg after going to town with Daisy, Jordan, and Tom, “the shadow of the tree fell abruptly across the dew and ghostly birds began to sing among the blue leaves.” (152 Fitzgerald) In this quote, the blue represents how hurt and confused Gatsby feels. He had always thought that Daisy never loved anyone
The Author uses different color to express different emotions of the main character, Celie, in The Color Purple. For example blue, red, black, and the most important one the color purple. Celie’s search for something she has never experienced is the symbolization of the mankind’s search for love and happiness. The color purple itself symbolizes love in the story.
He uses the color blue and grey to convey his feelings of failure and anxiety. Because Conrad is so hard on himself right from the start, it is difficult to see the first stage of grief, denial, in his development. Denial is “only a temporary defense, it is a feeling of heightened awareness of situations and Individuals” as said in the Kubler-Ross model. This “heightened awareness of situations can be seen through his over analyzing in conversations and situations. His denial isn’t only within, but it is seen on the outside through his need to convince everyone that he’s okay by over analyzing conversations and trying to be who he used to be.
Millions of people in the world listen to music for all different reasons. Most people all over the world listen to different genres of music in order to relax, but not too many people pay attention to the actual lyrics of a song. If you listen to the lyrics of a song you will realize that many songs have important messages or themes to them. An example of this is the lyrics of the song “Changes” by Tupac Shakur. If you listen to this song, you will realize that Tupac raps about not only the problems that African Americans face from society, but also the struggles that poor people in society have to endure and overcome. Many
Different songs can have different intentions on what message they are trying to send to the listener. As the listener, they are the only ones who interpret what they think about the song or if they like it or not. To me certain songs have lyrics that tell stories and teach life lessons and other songs I don’t even have to listen to the lyrics to like the song. Songs can reflect different sides to a person and may also relate to people’s lives. Through my three songs “Logic – The Come Up” and “Yung Dash – Momma I Made It” they represent the saying of “You will get knocked down but it’s your choice whether to get back up or not” as well as not letting anyone who doubts you get in your way with whatever you are working for.
In these songs, lyrics were repeated. Repetition draws the listener’s attention to particular words or phrases. In the song, Time of Your Life, the singer repeats the line, “It’s something unpredictable, but in the end it’s right. I hope you had the time of your life.” This line is repeated throughout the song multiple times. The singer is emphasizing the fact that anything can happen when you make your choice but in the end, you have to just relax and be happy. He wants the audience to really understand it. In the other song, the line, “Move along, move along. Just to make it through” The singer is repeating the term, “Move along” because that is the main message in this song. It is to move along when things seem bad. The singer wants the audience to really get the message and to feel good when they relate to this song. These lines connect to the theme because they are talking about moving on in tough situations and being satisfied with the outcome. These lyrics were emphasized well. Besides repetition, the singers also used symbols and juxtaposition to
Music has a dynamic ability of influencing emotions, from mood regulation to rumination and self-expression. The presence of political and social messages in popular music is frequently seen across cultures, in particular focusing on social issues and racism (Back, 2000, 127). This paper attempted to explore the political and social messages in popular music, more specifically it investigated the relationship between Soul music and civil rights movements in the United States.
The purple color itself symbolizes love in the story. When Celie is shopping for the first time in her life for new clothes, she wants to get something purple. However, she cannot find any
The Colors. This archetype is important to any kinds of book or films. Readers or audience can receive the messages or emotions that the authors want to convey through this symbolic archetype. For example, the book cover of Nineteen Eighty-Four is black, this makes the readers feel it is about depress and darkness, which the novel certainly is. In Manchester by the Sea, the color is blue. Blue usually represents sorrow, melancholy, and depress. An illustration of blue is the film poster’s background, which is a gloomy blue sky. In addition, another scene in the movie that indicates the color blue. “Under the same sky, Lee met his ex-wife, Randy. Randy already had her second marriage and gave birth to a baby. When they talked about past, Randy cried: ‘My heart was broken, and I know yours is broken, too.’”(Dir Lonergan). This sentence feels so sad, it gives a strong feeling of sorrow and depress. Therefore, color is a very important symbolic archetype to a
All the songs we hear, whether it is on the radio, or on YouTube, all have a meaning and a particular feeling they help express. Music is a huge part of our entertainment, the songs we listen to and the sounds we hear all contribute to our personality, feelings and emotions. Some songs bring the happiness out of us and some songs make us sad. Humans have a very broad range of emotions; therefore songs need to be made to fit all of those feelings. Death is a subject common amongst most singers. We all experience death somehow, whether it is a death of a friend or family member. Music can certainly shape our attitudes and personalities. Concerning death, songs can also reflect our views on dying and this can range from genre to genre. For
When people visit museums and examine the art of painters, they are able to understand that there is a story or theme behind the painting. Humans have the ability to know the symbolism behind the strokes of paint. They can comprehend the emotional turmoil of Van Gogh while he was painting, or see Salvador Dali’s imagination through his work. Music has the same ability to establish a story or theme. There are countless albums that achieve this. One of which is The Dark Side Of The Moon. Pink Floyds album criticizes the people who place values on worldly objects such as money, wars, and time, as well as trying to show listeners that mental illnesses should be taken seriously and not just cut out parts of their brain immediately.
“I love you, please say you love me too,” she sings. “I love you / I will be your light, shining through your eyes.” Still yet, we have “Crazy in Love” by Beyonce’ and Jay-Z, hip-hop artists. “Your love’s got me looking so crazy right now,” they sing/rap. “Looking so crazy in love.” Despite the musical differences between all these artists, all three songs/genres were able to give light to the theme of love. And even though the theme may be the same, the music and words were not. So even though two songs may have a theme that is similar, themes in music add diversity.
The second song I analyzed was “Paradise” by Coldplay. Similarly to “Kids”, the song “Paradise” starts with the idea of childhood. “When she was just a girl she expected the world. But it flew away from her reach so she ran away in her sleep and dreamed of paradise” is the opening verse for this tune. It talks of a young girl with big dreams expecting the world. As the girl in the song grows up she finds that life is not as simple as she believed. “Life goes on, it gets so heavy. The wheel breaks the butterfly. Every tear a waterfall. In the night the stormy night she'll close her eyes.” Those lyrics are a good example of how life has some downs, tears, and storms, but it talks of how the girl stays positive when the song says, “She’d say, ‘I know the sun must set to rise.’” I think this song is a good reflection of me. I have big dreams for myself, but as life goes on I go through some bumps in the road. I have encountered many of my own stormy nights, but I know the sun will rise to a clearer and brighter day in time. I have learned not to expect things to be handed to me, but to chase after my dreams, and my own perfect paradise to a path of success.
