Mount Vernon 2015 Mayor’s Wellness Challenge
Skagit Regional Health Employee 31 for 31 Challenge Proposal
Connie Davis and Liz McNett Crowl have informally discussed over time how SRH could increase and encourage our employees’ adoption of healthy lifestyle activities, especially physical activity. The annual Mayor’s Wellness Challenge seemed like an opportunity where we could encourage SRH participation in the Mayor’s Challenge which would be a good way for us to organizationally demonstrate our support of the Mayor’s effort to increase physical activity for health among our employees
The 2015 challenge is titled 31 minutes for 31 days. Participants are encouraged to accumulate 31 minutes of physical activity each day for the month of August. The city is coordinating free activities on

We have two interns who would be available through the middle of August to plan and implement our employee challenge.
The employee challenge would involve departments or groups of employees, families and friends forming teams of up to 12 people to participate in a friendly employee competition to see which team can complete 31 minutes of physical activity on all 31 days, and which teams could accumulate the most total minutes over the 31 days.
Each team’s “captain” or leader would serve as their team representative and submit the team members’ names and emails to our interns. The Outreach and Development (OAD) Interns have devised a Google Doc recording system which would enable team members to log their minutes. OAD would be responsible for monitoring participation and competition.
Participants will register individually with the City of Mount Vernon at www.mountvernonwa.gov and teams would register with the OAD department if they wish to be part of the competition. Participation in the program is free. The only cost to participants is the time required to register, record data, and
This article analyzes how workplace health promotion programs aids in prevention strategies. Berry and Mirabito share how critical it is to emphasize whole-person wellness rather than focusing solely on physical health. Including
K. Speroni in “Designing Exercise and Nutrition Programs to Promote Normal Weight Maintenance for Nurses” discusses challenges to exercise and healthy eating for nurses, along with the design and implementation of an evidence-based wellness program at Inova Loudoun Hospital in Leesburg, Virginia. Obesity is a nationwide problem and the necessity to integrate healthier lifestyle habits into daily living applies not only to patients but also to nurses. With the average age of nurses approaching 50, it is important that nurses have both the physical health and stamina to meet workplace demands, and the ability to model healthy behavior. Although organizations are increasingly offering workplace wellness programs, many are not evidence based.

The program’s focus is to increase awareness and educating
June 28th marked the end of the 4th Healthiest CIO Challenge. For the previous 45 days, participants strived to be active for 30 minutes for at least 30 days. This year over 2,775 staff from the CDC enrolled in the challenged and logged 2,807,415 minutes of physical activity. Certain centers or colleagues also created teams to compete in the challenge. Employees joined one another for health walks and attended zumba, line dancing, and yoga classes. Other teams also participated in scavenger hunts and games such as cat and mouse. The challenged encouraged employees to make small steps to improve their health and record their results. Success stories and health selfies can be found on the Healthiest CIO Sharepoint.
SHRM reported that “82% of organizations with a wellness program rated their initiatives as somewhat or very effective in improving employee health. Three-quarters (77%) indicated their wellness program was somewhat or very effective in reducing health care costs”. Thus, wellness benefits have increased over the past 20 years. SHRM’s report also indicated that the “most common wellness benefits were wellness tips and information sent to employees at least quarterly (63%), a wellness program (61%), and on-site seasonal flu vaccinations (54%). Additionally, more organizations offered rewards or bonuses for completing certain health and wellness programs, a standing desk, an on-site fitness center and an on-site nap room”. By having an effective wellness program, health care costs can be reduced for both the employer and employees. As a result, employees are depending on their employer to provide them with different money saving alternatives to reduce their health

When making your own wellness plan, self-reflection is inevitable and possible areas you may not have known to be problematic is now something that calls for attention. Without overthinking the overall makeup of our unique personalities and lifestyles, I personally believe that we all naturally attempt to compartmentalize the self to be the most efficient we can. Meaning that we don’t intentionally neglect or avoid sections in our life, but we tend to overlook them, deeming them less important to maintain. Upon my own reflection using Myers & Sweeney (2005) The Indivisible Self features, I have decide to work on improving my thinking under the creative umbrella, the spiritual, and self-care characteristics under the essential element of the
The Health and Wellness Fair had a lasting impression on me. I strongly believe that keeping each individual as healthy as possible is detrimental to both their quality and quantity of life. Everybody wants to live a long and happy life, but there are certain daily practices that must be altered in order for our hopes to become reality. According to Heidenreich (2014), “A primary purpose for focusing on lifestyle is the avoidance of chronic disease” (p.1786). Chronic disease is one aspect that could potentially affect me or one of my fellow classmates in the Nursing and Health Professions LLC. For this reason, the wide variety of health and fitness information spread throughout this event was incredibly valuable.
I have participated/ being involved in the wellness programs of the company around sixty percent of the time. It just not helps in the physical fitness but also works as a morale booster. With these programs, one feels like that someone cares for you. It results in increased efficiency at work as well as positively changed attitude towards life. I wish most of the employee would be involved in such programs and take benefits from what is being offered to
Overall, I feel I did ok with the exercise. Quite frankly, I found it quite confusing and not very realistic. I don’t chop my day into ½ hour increments as was done in the exercise; my days are always longer than 7 - 71/2 hours; whatever work needs to get done that day gets done – period. Of course, there are periods of time that are used for meetings when other activities must be put aside (assuming I’m not multitasking which I really do try to avoid). Activities that must be done at a specific time (like giving a tour or attending a lecture series), would most likely be known long before the day they occur – those would be in your calendar days if not weeks earlier. It’s not realistic to be able to designate specific slots of time for various activities. This did not seem to take into consideration things such as unscheduled interruptions (telephone calls or impromptu meetings). When I thought of all the unscheduled activities I had to chuckle as this picture came to mind of the ‘I Love Lucy’ episode where Lucy and Ethel are wrapping chocolates in a candy factory and can’t keep up with the speed with which the chocolates are coming down the line, so they
The President's Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition gives American adults a target physical activity range of at least 150 minutes of moderate to intense aerobic exercise per week. However, many Americans do not reach (much less exceed) the recommended amount of physical activity, leading to an inordinately high level of the negative results of failure to reach such recommendations - such as Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and poor mental health quality - in the United States today. Programs like the Coach Approach (designed by Dr. J. Annesi) have been designed to increase the rate of American adults reaching the recommended physical exercise levels and to reduce the number of participants from
Health and wellness in the workplace is crucial to business success. Increasingly, it is recognized that the workplace itself has a powerful affect on people’s health. When people are satisfied with their job, they are more productive and tend to be healthier. When employees feel that the environment at work is negative, they feel stressed. Stress has a large impact on employee mental and physical health, and in turn, on productivity. Companies that promote healthy lifestyle habits for employees to improve their health, often take the success of the company to heart and are likely to be absent less often for health related reasons.
To promote a healthy lifestyle for its people, CC participated in a Global Corporate Challenge where staffs were tasked with walking 10,000 steps every day for 100 days. The challenge was to help the CC people take steps towards a healthier lifestyle while also encouraging teamwork
You don’t need to run on the treadmill for two hours to get your daily dose of exercise. 30 minutes of exercise four teams a weak is more than sufficient for the average person and pushing yourself harder isn’t going to help you.
