The most important idea of the Mayflower Compact was the fact that it was the first rules created by the Pilgrims made for the New World. This compact was written in 1620, when the colonists wanted to be able to freely live from Great Britain. The colonists wanted self-government. They wanted the King to back off, and let them live freely. The Mayflower Compact says, “for our better ordering, and preservation and furtherance of the ends aforesaid; and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equal laws,” (The Mayflower Compact 1620). This shows that the colonists wanted the King to let them govern themselves.

It all started with a group of roughly 100 men and women who originated from England known as the Pilgrims. The Pilgrims were sick and tired of the lack of religious freedom and work/economic opportunities. There was no future for the Pilgrims in England. This was all until the group set sail on the Mayflower in order to find new land. After a rough journey, they came across a piece of land now known as New England. The colonists could now participate in the lawmaking process and could form a society based off of freedom and liberty.
