Maya Angelou was an inspiring women. She did many things throughout her life. She was a historian, educator, dramatist, civil rights activists, and more. She was famously known for being an outstanding poet. She is one of the most influential and renowned artists of all time.

Maya Angelou was born with the name Marguerite Johnson on April 4th in the year of 1928, in St. Louis, Missouri. Angelou's older brother, nicknamed Marguerite, Maya, from "Mya Sister". Angelou was sexually abused by her mother's boyfriend when she was a child. As a teenager, Angelou had love for dancing and the arts. In 1960, Angelou moved to Cairo, Egypt where she was an editor of an Egypt newspaper called "The Arab Observer". The year after, she moved to Ghana and taught at the University of Ghana’s School of Music and Drama. She also found a job as an editor for "The African Review" and wrote for "The Ghanaian Times". When Angelou was in Ghana, she met Malcolm X and In 1964 she returned to the United States to help him build his new Organization about unity with African Americans. Angelou's visit to Africa was one of her influences to write poetry. In the 1960's she wrote a poem named "Africa". Angelou was also very involved in the civil rights movement. Most of her poems represented the Civil Rights Era. In 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr. asked Angelou to organize a march. Little did she know that year he was going to be assassinated. That year she wrote "Blacks, Blues, Black", a ten-part series of documentaries about the connection between music and black Americans. In 1969 she also wrote her first autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, published in 1969, which brought her global recognition. She wrote a total of seven autobiographies.

People believe Angelou's autobiographies are more important than her poetry. All of Angelou's books have been best sellers.
