Maya Angelou Alone

Good Essays

Some of the greatest poems ever have been written by Maya Angelou. One of these poems is called “Alone”. In this poem Maya is thinking of a place she can go to where her soul is at peace and has a home. Then she says having things like money or a great job will not always make someone happy. Finally, Maya says that someone cannot find their soul a home if they do things alone and instead the suffering race of man must come together and do things as one. The message of the poem relates to the life of Amir, from The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. Amir is also trying to find his soul a home after all the things he has seen in his life. First it was leaving his servant, best friends, and later he would find out, half-brother to be raped by Assef. …show more content…

This is evident in Maya Angelou’s “Alone” and through Amir, from The Kite Runner. In the poem “Alone”, Maya Angelou writes, There are some millionaires With money they can’t use Their wives run round like banshees Their children sing the blues They’ve got expensive doctors To cure their hearts of stone. But nobody No, nobody Can make it out here alone. (14-22) Here Maya is trying to say that no matter what someone is or what someone has, if that someone is doing it all alone then they will not be able to do it. This shows how humans have the urge to have money and big titles by their names even though it comes at the price of not being able to share it with anyone. In the story, The Kite Runner, Amir says, “Huddled together in the dining room and waiting for the sun to rise, none of us had any notion that a way of life had just ended” (Hosseini 46). Amir is saying that the way he used to live with his father’s money, stature, house and job has come to a halt. With this quote Amir shows that even in such a safe place like Baba’s house with Baba, a humanitarian, and servants as good as Hassan and Ali, things still can go wrong. In an instant, thanks to the coup, Amir’s great life has changed. One similarity here …show more content…

That’s what Maya Angelou does in “Alone” and what Amir does in The Kite Runner. In the poem “Alone”, Maya Angelou writes, Lying, thinking Last night How to find my soul a home Where water is not thirsty And bread loaf is not stone. (1-5) Here Maya is saying she wants to find a place where life is good and better than where she is now. This shows how a person just needs a new place to start sometimes. Also it shows how much of a tough and rough place a person may have come from and how they have not gotten the chance to live yet. In the story, The Kite Runner, Amir says, “America was different. America was a river, roaring along, unmindful of the past. I could wade into this river, let my sins drown to the bottom, let the waters carry me someplace far. Someplace with no ghosts, no memories and no sins” (Hosseini 176). Amir is saying that he has found a place where the past is not remembered and a place that can cleanse his mind of the scars he has had to deal with for so long. Amir just wants to forget what he did to Hassan all those years ago in the alley. It is that memory that haunts him the most. The way he gets rid of the guilt is by saving Hassan’s son, Sohrab, from Kabul and adopting him as his own son. One similarity here is that both
