Be aware of the diagnosis, but do not treat the individual as the diagnosis. Respect and appreciation for each person's unique career and life journey is essential. (P.1) The client needs to seek additional counseling to receive a diagnosis and treatment for her self-mutilation. Nevertheless, as her career counselor, there are effective techniques that can be implemented so she does not feel ostracized or singled out during career counseling and in the workplace due to her mental illness. The more a career counselor knows about the client’s diagnosis, the easier it is to tailor their approach to suit the client’s needs. Rubin (2007) also discusses how important is it to provide your clients with hope, hope that they will succeed in the workplace despite their mental illness. During this time, it is best to help the client feel empowered about their capabilities as well as being honest about their limitations. The client self mutilates as a coping mechanism so it is important to identify which career positions may be too overwhelming and daunting that may possibly force her to surrender to cutting
Tanyia also presents with oppositional behavior (verbal and physical aggression, fluctuating moods-anger outbursts, defiance), truancy from school in the 2015 school year, running away from home on numerous occasions for two days at a time when mother is out of town working, sexual behaviors, and substance use (Marijuana). Tanyia has also experienced multiple traumas of being sexually victimized at the age of 12 by a neighbor, forced to pose for sexually explicit photos, and physical abuse in the home (as evident by numerous marks on her torso). When first counseling with Tanyia, she had limited insight as to the seriousness of her behaviors and the causes of her behaviors. Through further exploration, Tanyia was able to process through her traumas and verbalize her feelings of abandonment by her mother whom is always “traveling for work” and always having to care for her siblings one of which has a physical handicap and needs 24 hour care. In discussing Tanyia’s behaviors with her parents, her mother, Ms. Jones, believes that

A mentally ill teenage named Jessica Roger was born to Joan and Kevin Roger. As a young girl Roger’s mother was verbally abusive to her and her sister, she even went as far as trying to kill her husband. When little Roger was about eleven years old her mother left them with their alcoholic father. Roger ended up in prison for biting her sister and other acts because of her disorder, eventually she committed suicide while serving her time in a place where she just didn't belong. Although her mother showed remorse after her death and said, “she accepts blame, maybe too much, for what happened to her Jet”. On the other hand her father was unapologetic for his drinking “I still drink. It’s legal”. Roger sent her parents countless letter of how she was feeling but they didn’t do anything until after her death. Are you wonder how a mentally ill sixteen year old girl ends up on prison?
Area of Concern #1: In several case files, and across local offices, the federal review team noted instances of data entry that took place two months or longer after the actual activity.
Once this girl started with the drugs, she could not stop. As soon as she tried the first drug, it lead to all of the other drugs and things that she did. Her first time doing the drug was an accident, and she did not know, but she made the wrong choice in continuing to do them. She said it gave her a feeling of belonging and love that she had never felt before. If her parents or her close friends had paid more attention to her, then some of the events that happened would not have happened. Her heavy drug use lead to her runaway from home to the streets, involvement in crime, her prostitution, and her visit to the insane asylum. She found a "best friend" (Chris) - one that would give her drugs - and they decided to runaway and leave their family and friends to start their own shop in San Francisco. They thought they could not handle their parents telling them what is right and what is wrong, but that is what they needed to hear. They were naive in thinking they could live their lives alone without any rules or any authority.

Elizabeth is now seventeen and finishing her junior years of high school; however, Elizabeth is in a juvenile corrections school instead of her usual public school. The past school years have been very rough on Anna and Elizabeth’s relationship. The problems began towards the end of her sophomore year. Elizabeth had a couple of teachers that did not communicate well with IEP team meetings and couldn’t quite understand Elizabeth’s struggle with depression. Elizabeth began falling through the crack of the public school system and felt forgotten so Elizabeth sought out attention another way. Elizabeth's grandparents also decided to buy an RV and travel the states, leaving behind Anna and Elizabeth. Elizabeth's grandparents try and be supportive from a distance, but her recent behavior has pushed them away. Mr. Phil has worked hard to keep Elizabeth on track but without the whole team working together, the planning process is falling apart. Because of this failure, Elizabeth began having trouble with underage drinking and smoking marijuana excessively.

My family and friends don’t quite understand my motivations to become a mental health counselor. Personally, I can think of nothing more rewarding than helping people through dark times and giving hope for a brighter future. Deep down, I’m an idealist with enough life experience to pepper my expectations. There are countless possible research topics within the mental health field, but I’ve recently developed a deep appreciation of suicide prevention since volunteering for the Kern County Mental Health Hotline. I’ve also become acutely aware of the relationship between suicide and mood disorders, such as depression and bipolar disorder.

I used to be a cutter… but shh, don’t tell. Society didn't allow me to express my pain that way…Today’s society refuses to acknowledge many problems that teens deal with. People would rather believe in ‘happily ever after’ than face the truth, children are suffering. While it may seem to others that the problems are made up, its very real to the one dealing with them everyday. This suffering can leave permanent scars, and damage (if not ruin) their future. By remaining ignorant, self harm becomes more and more common, but at what cost? If educators and medical personnel were to be more educated on self harm and how to deal with it, teens and young adults would be more comfortable asking for help. Getttig rid of the stereotypes that
