Since serving with AmeriCorps, my legal advocacy experiences and my passion for issues affecting children and families heightened my desire to learn how to address problems by creating equitable and humane responses central to the needs of distressed communities. This desire first led me to apply and complete the Master’s degree in Public Policy from Trinity College. This degree program enabled me to understand the role of government and how public policy decisions impact people’s everyday lives. Since graduating, I realize that I am only equipped to contribute to social research, policy analysis and advocacy efforts that seek to improve the systems amongst which people live, however, I lack the ability to address the biological and psychological …show more content…

Social work is a career that finds and chooses you, rather than you selecting it. Social work has always been an immense portion of my life even when I had no recollection of what social work entailed. My life revolved around so many situations that had a social worker stepped in, my life would be totally different than it is today. Many individuals and agencies lack the compassion and empathy for oppressed people. Having been in many circumstances, has given me the experience and background that influenced me to go into social work, as well as the understanding of my role and responsibilities that I will assume as a professional social worker, and my reasons for selecting the program at ASU School of Social Work and thoughts on how the Mission Statement addresses my career goals.

Social work involves passionate individuals who are dedicated to helping others by providing services to vulnerable children, families or individuals in need, while constantly looking for ways in which we can improve society. This discipline is dedicated to helping people find solutions to their problems in order to make the world a better place. I chose this field of study, because I find the job of a social worker rewarding. I have always enjoyed helping others and knowing that I have made a difference in someone’s life. It is no secret that this is a challenging career; however, the feeling of knowing that you made the world a better place is indescribable. I have simply decided to make my passion of helping others into a career. I know that in order to make my passion a career I will need to get the best education and training possible.
My interest in mental health and social justice arose early in my education, specifically when I learned about the complexities of the brain and how it molded people into who they are. I knew from there that I wanted to pursue a career that allowed me to help and guide others; I dreamed of being a catalyst for change. My undergraduate studies in psychology at the University of Michigan increased my fascination with the mind, providing me with a solid foundation for my graduate studies. My minor in gender and health complemented this, diversifying and expanding my knowledge of marginalized populations. The moment I learned about the field of social work during a career fair in my sophomore year of college, I felt that it was the answer I had

When I first entered the field of social work at Southwest Mississippi Community College, I was clueless as to what the social work profession entailed. At Southwest MS Community College, we mostly focused on perquisites and a few classes related to family. After, leaving Southwest MS Community College and entering Jackson State University, I realized my previous college did not teach me anything relating to the field of social work. However, my entry in my first class Ethics and Values at Jackson State University taught me about the six core values in social work, such as service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity and competence. Upon, my entry into JSU, Bachelors of Social Work (BSW) program, I understood that social work was not about assisting only children. There is masses of people who need, social workers to advocate for better housing, food, medical care and other basic necessities to survive everyday life.
As stated earlier, I believe that the social work field will allow me to bring attention and professional support to disadvantaged populations. Persuading the MSW program at this moment in my life will not only allows me to help those in need, but it will strengthen my personal values and approaches that I consider to be essential in order to efficiently help others. My approach stems from three concepts that I find to be vital: humility, optimism and determination, regardless of the circumstances. Hoping to be permanently guided by those principles, I will continue to embrace my commitment to the disadvantaged and to be a voice for the
After I graduated from the University of California Santa Barbara I was unsure what my next step would be. Of course I was anxious since I did not have experience working nor did I excel in my undergrad studies however, I knew I needed to use my newly earned degree in a positive way. Fast forward, after working for two years, I have gained the skills, knowledge and values from my work experiences that have confirmed my desire to advance my education in the social work field. I currently have my own case load of clients as a case manager at a level 12 group home but it’s time to take the next step forward. I want to ultimately advance social justice and provide services to assist individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities.
Two years have passed while hours have been poured into extensive research on every avenue outside of social work, from a Masters in Public Health to a Masters in International Affairs, each seeming as though they might provide the most benefits in future endeavors or leading towards this elusive path I thought I was seeking. At the completion of countless hours of research, I found my heart and mind consistently return to the core, where I started, a Masters in Social Work. With a MSW, a multitude of positions in various specialties, populations, and settings are available, but beyond the versatility of a MSW, a social worker is simply who I am at the core and never a career path I had a say in choosing. One and a half years in the Peace
Later, I graduated from CCBC and was accepted into Morgan State University’s School of Social Work. Following my acceptance into the social work program I began to appreciate the practice greatly for its diversity. I learned that the social work profession would provide me with the ability to fulfill all of my career goals. I desired to be a part of a helping profession, positively impact lives, work in a diverse environment, provide advocacy and work hands on in urban communities. While matriculating through the BSW program, my interest remained the same but my idea of provision
My vision of the social work field is being able to help people in need and being the person that people can look back on and remember as a huge help in time of need. I think my core values and beliefs will help me be an effective social worker and help me succeed in this field. It is in my belief that a person should never be knocked down when they are going through hardships, and rather empowering them. I also believe that not everyone could be a social worker because it takes a certain kind of empathetic and self-aware person. I truly believe that my upbringing has humbled me to understand and not be judgmental of people’s issues since I’ve seen a lot in my short twenty-one years.
Every worthwhile journey begins with one step. My social work journey began when I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Utah in 2003. I thought my next step would be to immediately pursue a graduate degree. In my undergraduate career I had taken numerous classes from the College of Social and Behavioral Science and had done well in those classes. In my Social Work as a Profession course I had an assignment to shadow a social worker and write a paper about my experience. I chose to shadow my father-in-law, a social worker with over 30 years of experience, and in my paper I expressed my desire to go into the social work field. I knew I liked helping people. I knew I liked problem solving and critical thinking. I thought my 22 year-old self was ready to embark on that journey, but I wasn’t. I realize now that what I lacked at graduation was one crucial step… perspective. Over the past twelve years I have gained that much needed perspective and have taken many steps forward in my journey, and with those steps and that increased perspective, I now feel more fully prepared to begin my social work career.
Social Work is a field of interest to me because of the positive effort it contributes to society. Within the social work profession individuals are striving to improve the welfare of those in need of assistance. Social Workers assist a variety of individuals; from children, young adolescents, older adults, mentally ill, substance abuse individuals, and many other minorities; as in LGBT members, veterans, homeless people, and low socioeconomic status individuals. The broad mix population fascinates me because within this field one will always be able to work in a flexible environment. Social Work is used in multiple settings as in hospitals, nursing skilled homes, mental health and substance abuse clinics, schools, correctional facilities, community centers, child welfare agencies, employee assistance programs, and private practices.
A master’s degree in Public health is an educational core which allows an individual to expertise and use the art and science of preventing diseases, prolonging lives as well as promoting society health. This is mainly done through organized efforts and informed society choices, communities, organizations and individuals. I am currently interested in pursuing a master’s degree in this course because am so much concerned with health threats that are based on the population health analysis. I also find this career path appropriate because I will be able to deal with several health dimensions which encompass a state of comprehensive mental, physical and social well-being and not merely disease absence. This career is also fully packed with advancements and a great earning potential. In addition, I will be able to help several lives in the society that need services regarding this sector as I sharpen my leadership skills further and widen my scope of knowledge and skills in medical field as well as the managerial field.
