The biggest impact mass shootings and suicides are on the victims. This can range from physical assault to emotional distress. In the cases of mass shootings, the victims can be identified as the people that were either shot or indirectly harmed through the shooting. In columbine, there were 13 total deaths consisting of 12 students and one teacher. In addition to the deaths, 24 others were wounded with a range of injuries (Library, 2017). Some victims endured a few cuts and bruises from the chaos and others became paralyzed from the gun-shot wounds and are now living life with limitations. One victim was shot three times, two in the back and one in the arm. She suffered nerve damage from the shots in the back and an excruciating painful recovery from the bullet in the arm (Library, 2017). Unfortunately, she was unable to recover nerve damage which paralyzed her from waist down. Another victim was shot twice in the head and suffered traumatic brain injury as he tried to escape out the school window (Library, 2017). These stories were only two of the 24 victims from one incident. Similar stories exist from other mass shootings that display the tragic effects in has on the victims. The physical pain is only one aspect of the impact it has on these victims. The trauma also causes emotional …show more content…
The families are now liable to care for them throughout the recovery. This can put a strain on their lives as well because they now have more issues to deal with. They must devote more time and readjust their schedules to fit the needs of the injured victims. This can last from a few months to years depending on the extent of the injury. Others endure a more tragic suffering from the passing of a loved one. This can cause the same effects as depression and PTSD (Roxanne Dryden-Edwards, 2017). The mourning process can be extensive and inability to cope with grief can lead to physiological issues of their
In his article “Real-life mass shootings: The subject Hollywood dare not touch”, Alex Suskind focuses on the gun epidemic in America and discusses reasons why Hollywood shows immense brutality in movies but don’t dare to create one about real-life mass shootings. His main claim is that Americans prefer escapism to realism in movies.
Pain can be emotional or physical, but the obvious part about it is that it is caused by being hurt by someone or something. The mental wall that everyone builds after being emotionally abused makes many people believe nothing will ever hurt them. They are extraordinarily wrong. Even when someone believes one hundred percent that the wall is indestructible, they should never have
The Columbine shooting is known as the bloodiest, also the deadliest school shooting in U.S history. On April 20, 1999 twelve teenagers, also one adult were killed in a massive school shooting. In this synopsis, I will reiterate the key points, implications of treatment, and the role of social work that Dr. Bride spoke about in the video.
Traumatic events can affect a person’s mind and in most cases in a horrible way. The people who survive these events for the most part aren’t in a good state of mind afterwards. Jennifer Brooks from the Tribune News explains that the phenomenon of these near death experiences are occurring more in many places, and it is causing severe trauma to those who’ve experienced the traumatic event. “In the aftermath of those shootings, much of the focus is on those who died -- seven lives ended at Accent that day, including that of the shooter, who was in Souter's office because he was about to be fired. But for the survivors, the grief and horror of what they saw and heard last long after the eulogies end, the flowers wilt and the news cycle moves on.” (Brooks). Brooks explains the horror and traumatic event and the horror of what the people of these mass shootings experienced. “Within 20 minutes of the first gunshot, Souter was on a gurney in Hennepin County Medical Center, getting the first of three transfusions, on his way to the first of three operations.” (Brooks). Brooks goes on to explain how one of the officers who was working security spotted the shooter and was able to get to the location fast based on his assignment. "I'm still impacted by loud noises. I don't like crowds. I don't like being in
Mass shootings You’re in a dark room, your ears are ringing from the gunshots. You’re on the floor and you look up, books on desks are untouched, but your fellow classmates on the floor are not. You’re surrounded by the outcome of a school shooting. Blood splatters the floor and walls along with bullet cases.
Having protection in each house is something that should be mandatory, especially if there is a whole family living in the house. Gun control is a very serious topic in today’s society; it is basically a pack of policies and laws that keep the use, sale, etc. of guns under control, because without them, people would go crazy. Although California has gun control laws already, the government is trying to make them stricter because of all the incidents such as mass shootings. The use of firearms has been crazy these past few years, there has been plenty of mass shootings killing many police officers and citizens. These tragic events are leading up to the government wanting to take away the Second Amendment just
After the Newtown, Connecticut elementary school mass shooting, on June 10, 2014, President Barack Obama stated: "My biggest frustration so far is the fact that this society has not been willing to take some basic steps to keep guns out of the hands of people who can do just unbelievable damage. We're the only developed country on Earth where this happens....And it happens once a week. And it's a one-day story....The country has to do some soul-searching on this." Every day there seems to be another story in the news regarding a shooting, ranging from small to large scale. Has something within ourselves changed that's caused the increased violence? I fear that the situation is only going to get worse as time goes on. There has been an increase in mass shootings over the last decade. Perhaps the increase is partly due to the popularity of media and social media. In order to prevent the mass shootings and gun violence in general, we need to put stricter policies in place for background checks and weapons allowed for purchase and ownership. Other countries around the world, with stricter gun laws, do not have mass shootings like the United States does.
FACT: More than the physical pain, the trauma experienced by victims is a result of the violation of trust, privacy and control over their bodies. The emotional and psychological harm can be far more devastating and longer-lasting than any physical wound.
Trauma is obviously a very impactful thing on someone’s life. It can hurt people in various ways and
The emotional strain that a victim has to face can damage them in such a way, that it often leads to depression, anxiety, distrust, unusual crying, and disoriented. The impact is so great that it leaves the victim in shock and disbelief. Other feelings range from fear, embarrassment and humiliation. (Holmstrom, 1973-74). Which causes them not to leave home, isolate themselves from friends
Burgess, L.L. Holmstrom,1974).” Trauma is psychological and the response will vary with each victim, some have a range of emotions following an assault, such as pain, irritation from being touched by the attacker, tension and soreness, crying, yelling, angry, overwhelm, confused, and disgraced.
The debate of gun control have become more controversial due to the increase of domestic incidents such as mass shootings and police brutality.
Many tragedies of mass shootings have occurred over the past years. Since there’s really no kind of regulation for how much ammunition the average person could purchase. Therefore, prop 63 would be something to come into consideration. The government should require background checks to prohibit possession of large capacity ammunition magazines because it’s a safety hazard for the daily life of a citizen, there should be a limitation for the average person, and can prevent an incident. Although prop 63 may violate the second amendment society’s safety and regulation should come first.
In 2010 there were 11,078 firearm related homicides in America. My belief is that only the police should be allowed to purchase and use firearms. I think that this will help to reduce the rate of murders caused by firearms in the USA and potentially lower the murder rate overall. An outright ban on firearms (with the exception of the police) would lower a number of mass shootings and stop criminals from obtaining guns through burglaries. There are other countries that already have stricter laws on the purchase and use of firearms. These countries have much lower homicide rates than America.
