Masculinity in A View From The Bridge by Arthur Miller
Miller uses several forms of masculinity to show the audience that in different circumstances and cultures different forms of masculinity are possible. This is shown to us by comparing both extremes of masculinity and what they both involve. In the longshoreman culture respect is as much a part of a man as is his own image. This leads to those members of the community going to extraordinary lengths to keep their reputation in order to stop them being emasculated in the eyes of the community. In the Sicilian culture this is not so true and a form of masculinity that has certain feminine qualities is shown to us.

Another form of masculinity that is shown to us in A View From The Bridge that is also based upon physical masculine strength is that of Marco. His masculinity is of a similar style to that of Eddie's, but differs in one fundamental way. Instead of Eddie's obsession with his image in the community Marco is obsessed with honour and above all family honour. This can clearly be seen by the way he looks after his brother and family, spending his first money on "medicine for [his] boy". When looking out for his brother, Rodolfo, more often than not he is stopping him from getting into trouble, "You'll be quiet, Rodolfo", "You come home early now". The problem with this style of masculinity that we are shown by Miller is that when it comes into contact with similar styles of masculinity it can cause friction in relationships between people. We can see this clearly in Marco and Eddie's relationship. In the beginning Eddie admires Marco because "he's a strong guy", but at the tension grows superficially Marco seems calm. This is particularly noticeable in the scene with the chair being lifted. In the West Yorkshire Play House production of the play the sound of a gramophone needle scratching in a heartbeat style noise was used to give a sense of tension. But later when is honour is damaged he explodes in a much less impressive way and
This love shown by the husband demonstrates how far masculinity has come in just a short period since the frontier days. A husband’s responsibility to be loving and kind was something more commonly associated with a woman’s role until now. The Husbands I’m right demeanor shows how men can be stubborn since men were the “Experts” of the day. In the husband’s case, he was an expert physician. Since he knows that he has been schooled in the knowledge of what to do in cases such as his wife’s, thus, he will not even consider her opinion. So, this means that while men were viewed as experts in this period they were stubborn none the less. This is because of the notion that men were more knowledgeable. And not admitting when you’re wrong is something that men commonly do as well for a matter of pride. (Make sound sophisticated)
T: Respect is a value that is learned and earned and is important in order to become a good man. E: We see in our media too many times, people who have lost respect and shown disrespect. These people are often portrayed as role models or people who are in significant positions. When we are confronted with these images, we can be discouraged from our own journey to being respectful adults. E: Cameron is aware of how disrespectful he has been to women when he looks at the Christmas catalogue.
The definition of masculinity; Is the fact of being a man or having qualities considered typical of a man.
In this essay I will describe the way in which Miller hints at the tragedy in the beginning of the play ‘A View from the Bridge’. Miller gives us lots of clues in the opening section to try and get the audience thinking. He wants us to think about how the main character dies not what happened in the end because everyone knows that in a tragedy the main character dies. Miller uses a range of devices e.g. uses of plot devices, the structure foreshadowing o put an impact on the audience understanding of the play.
Older than any individual group, organization, religion, civilization, culture or military, respect is almost as old, if not as old, as the human race itself. Respect started with prehistoric bands of people, looking for experience and leadership, and remains today as we know it within societies and militaries around the world. Indeed, nothing with an organizational hierarchy, including civilization itself, could exist as we know it today without the ongoing application of respect, in its many forms. This fact is most obvious, and can not be illustrated any further, than by looking at the worlds militaries, and by observing customs, courtesies, and policies of different military organizations, past and present. If one
Owen Wister's The Virginian, regarded as the first Western novel, presents and constructs the emergence of white masculinity as represented through the Western frontier and American expansionism. Through the invigoration of white manhood, Wister responds to the perceived threats of Eastern culturalism and economic dominance. The embodiment of the male gender through the gain of financial capital, pride, and status are what essentially divides the different characters throughout the novel. These groups are created by social democracy and economic endeavor and expressed through the form of true rugged individualism and proving self worth. Wister’s establishment of the cowboy shows the strong contrast between the female and male gender, where

When talking about the word respect, numerous individuals have no clue what it implies. This word changes its meaning depending on who is inquired. Several people, even ones who comprehend what respect implies, still have no respect for anyone else. A two-way streak that everyone appears to overlook is respect. The word respect has a one-sided meaning to it, as an consequence of all the disrespect around the world. Respect has different opinions, gone through history, and help shape famous quotes.
People demand different amounts of respect, though not everyone is willing to give the amount needed. Maybe this is because not every one knows what respect means.
‘A view from the Bridge’ by Arthur Miller is set in the 1950’s based around Italian Immigration and the American Sicilian culture in America at that time. The Sicilian attitude towards society’s expectations of gender were very traditional which created the patriarchal society they live in, to which they transferred towards their new lives in the US. This meant men were expected to behave in a typical ‘masculine’ manner such as strong, hard-working and robust whereas women would be stay at home wives, taking care of the family and produce more children, however if someone were to act in a way different to their stereotype they would be outcasted or rejected to society. The definition of masculinity is to be in possession of the

William Lyon Phelps, an American author, a critic, and a scholar said: “the final test of a gentleman is respect for those who can be of no possible service to him.” What William is saying is that once you can respect other people no matter who they are or what they can do for you, you wont necessarily be a gentleman, but a better and more considerate person. My father has taught me one of the most important things that people are forgetting, show respect to other people and to be considerate of how what you say will make them feel.

Everyone wants to be respected. It’s in our nature, but in order to obtain respect, first of all one has to respect oneself. Second, one has to show respect to others in order to gain respect from them. If one doesn’t show respect to someone, that person may often feel blown off and lose respect for you. Respect in my eyes is like a math equation loyalty plus duty equals respect. respect is gained in conducting ones self in a way that others can stand
