This study of Martin Luther is brought about through the many books written about him. As a whole most of the books all give much the same account of his life. I found that the Catholic encyclopedia gives remarkable insight to the work that he pursued. Some things, of course are left out of their account of his life. We have made two trips to Witenburg just to study his life, and at least a dozen trips to Rome in which we found that there was mixed reports of what went on when he visited the eternal city.

Martin Luther was one of the greatest monks, priests, and theological teachers of Germany, along with being the symbol of the Protestant Reformation. He did not start off so religious however. One day he was caught in a frightening and dangerous storm. He prayed to God begging not to be killed, and vowed to become a monk if he survived. Bainton’s Here I Stand is a chronologically arranged biography of Martin Luther’s life which seeks to show his philosophy and ideas for the reform of the Catholic Church without seeking to perform psychoanalysis of the Reformer.
In 1517, Luther created a document for debate with the church. The document, known as the Ninety-five Theses, outlined what Luther saw were discrepancies between the actions of the church and what Scripture teaches. He nailed the paper to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenburg on October 31, 1517. Albert, the Archbishop of Mainz and Magdeburg, received a copy of the document the same day. (McKim 8) The church proceeded to charge Luther with heresy and over the course of the next three years, he faced several panels. Finally, in 1520, the pope excommunicated Luther and fearing for his life, Luther went into hiding. During this time, Luther married a former nun named Katharina von Bora. During 1524 - 1526, Luther came out of hiding to oppose a revolt lead by the peasants in Germany which the other Protestant clergy supported.
“Saint Anne, help me! I will become a monk. ”Martin Luther once said. In this paper I’m going to tell you about the Protestant Reformation and Martin Luther’s 95 theses. Martin Luther lead the Protestant Reformation. I will also discuss about the counter ( Catholic ) Reformation.
Martin Luther Introduction- 1. I want to do this project on Martin Luther because I find it inspiring that first he was devoted to the church but after he realized that the church used God’s name to their own advantage he turned against it, and started a huge rebellion against the Catholic church. This takes a lot of bravery and courage to stand up against such a powerful institution, which almost everyone believed in. He fought to express his idea, and did not care about what stood in his way, all he wanted to do is let people see what the church was doing, using God’s name in vain, and selling salvation & redemption.
Martin Luther was a great writer. He was born in 1483 in Eisleben, Germany. He secretly spent his early years as a monk and scholar. He would later become known as one of the most remembered figures in religious history. Luther has been known many years by his faith. In 1510 – 1511, Luther attended the University of Erfurt because his dad wanted him to be a lawyer. Later his studies led him to quit trying to become a lawyer and began to live life as a monk. His life as a monk came about because he was trapped in a storm and was struck by lightning. He called out to God for help saying he would become a monk if he saved him. So when the storm was over he kept his promise to God and became a monk.
Martin Luther was a Monk, Priest and Theologian born in late 1483 in the German town of Eisleben. His father owned a copper mine and had always wished for his son to go into civil service. When Luther was seventeen he arrived at the University of Erfurt. By 1502, Luther had already received his bachelor’s degree and by 1505 he had a Master’s degree. The same year, while returning to University, he was caught in a tremendous thunderstorm. A lightening bolt struck near him and terrified, he cried out, "Help, St. Anne! I'll become a monk!”. Luther lived, and keeping to his promise, he dropped out of university and entered the monastery.
Born November 10th 1483 in Eisleben, Saxony, Martin Luther was baptised the following day into the Catholic church. Being the eldest of a large family, Luther’s father wanted his son to complete his masters, and then his law degree. During his time studying to becoming a lawyer, Luther studied the arts of the mind in theology and philosophy, though even these became unsatisfying as Luther believed strongly in the importance of faith in god rather than reasoning. Legend holds that a sign from St Anne is the reason for Luther’s radical change into a religious role; Returning to Erfurt after visiting his parents, Luther encountered a thunderstorm where a bolt of lightning struck near him, terrified, Luther pleaded out "St. Anne Help me! I will become a monk.” Once the storm had passed, Luther, against his parents will, entered a closed Augustinian cloister in Erfurt in mid July 1505, and continued his search for religious understanding.
However Martin reformed the congregation. This decision of his made him go in fear. Luther made his vows in 1506 and then started to preach or in other words he was a priest in 1507. He was selected for advanced theological study at the university of Erfurt. In 1508 he was sent to another university in Wittenberg.

Martin Luther grew up in a home with very strict parents. As a result, Luther’s childhood was plagued with anxiety at home and at school. Because his father planned for him to become a lawyer, shortly after receiving a Master of Arts degree from Erfurt University he returned to the university to study law. Consequently, after a life threatening experience in a storm, Luther left the university and joined a monastery. In 1505, Luther became an Augustinian monk and subsequently became a priest in 1507. According to John Dillenberger, “Luther was extremely sensitive to the problem of how to become worthy to receive the grace of God rather than the damning consequences of His righteousness”.
Martin Luther was born in Eisleben, Saxony which is located in Germany on November 10, 1483 (“Martin Luther- Biography”). Luther was born into humble living, with his parents were peasants. Luther’s dad was a miner and did not want his son to mine as well, so he sent Luther to school at the age of seven with hopes of him becoming a lawyer. Luther continued onto that path until he experienced a life-altering event. In 1505 Luther was caught in a thunderstorm and became so afraid he frantically prayed for mercy on his life. In his anguished prayer, he promised St. Anne (the patron Saint of miners) that he would become a monk if the storm subsided. The storm passed, and thus Luther’s journey began.
