Martin Luther King's I Have A Dream Speech

Exactly 52 years ago from today, a Civil Rights fighter, in the name of Martin Luther King Jr. gave his “I have a dream” speech, on the steps of the famous Lincoln Memorial. Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered mostly because of his nonviolent protests, and giving his famous speech, in front of a ton of people. Dr. King’s speech consists of three main characteristics: Logos, Ethos, and Pathos. These three characteristics make the perfect Martin Luther King speech. Many people in the modern world still believe that the “I have a Dream” speech is the one of the best speeches in history. The first characteristic Logos, is expressed throughout this speech, especially in the first part of his speech. He uses logos in the first part of the speech, “Instead, of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check” (King). He strongly emphasizes the use of figurative language and comparisons such as Analogies. He uses logic in the above quote to tell the reader/listener that anybody can realize how money comes and goes and how it can be taken from you. He also urges listeners to be able to relate to being handed a “bad check” by America, he uses this line to make listeners understand what America is trying to do with the Negro people. …show more content…

The following line is an example that should be a strong point of emotion or Pathos, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character” (King). Dr. King expresses an enormous amount of emotion with starting the sentence off with “I have a dream” in the last part of the speech. In the above quote, Dr. King also expresses emotion by talking about his four children and how they will live a day in America when no discrimination occurs between white and colored
