Perusing higher education can be done for a few reasons; either wanting to obtain a professional degree for a job or a liberal arts degree for a set interest. Either way, higher education has become a mandatory thing in many peoples lives. Ronald Barnett and Martha Nussbaum both have similar views on education. Barnett believes that there will always be more to learn and a proper education should make you realize that there is always more to learn. Nussbaum’s approach to the situation states that the way the United State’s education system is built, students are almost forced into caring about learning the humanities and such. I believe that higher education is something that can be used to teach students how to act and react when pushed
For me, and probably many of my fellow students, higher education always seemed like a foregone conclusion: I never questioned if I was going to college, just where. No other options ever occurred to me. After working 12-hour shifts in a factory, the other options have become brutally clear. When I'm back at the university, skipping classes and turning in lazy re-writes seems like a cop-out after seeing what I would be doing without school. All the advice and public-service announcements about the value of an education that used to sound trite now ring true."(Braaksma,
In the essay, “Are Too Many People Going To College?” author Charles Murray addresses the issue of the increasing demand of college degree from all individuals, regardless of their abilities and talents. “Today, if you do not get a B.A., many people assume it is because you are too dumb or too lazy”(Murray, 253). Murray puts a strong argument against this kind of growing culture among people. He believes that a B.A. degree is not a gateway to success as different people have different ability in various fields, making them unique. Murray also emphasis instilling the liberal arts education in the minds of young students of this country. Furthermore, he explains that the development in technology and an increase in the availability of online
I, Helen Katz, was the youngest of eight children. I was born and raised in a religious Jewish family living in a small town in northeastern Hungary. I was always considered the "baby" of my family, I was the focus of everyone's love and affection, although my Hebrew name was Hannah, my family always called me by my nickname, Potyo, which meant "the dear little one”.
In past years, when people was talking about higher education, they had no hesitation to mention university immediately. When others were mentioning that college also belonged to higher education, sometimes they reacted with a wry smile, and shook their heads. Yes, even if it is for today, university gets the higher appraisal than college, and even many people think ‘‘college as America used to understand it is coming to an end.’’ As parents, they prefer their children to study in university instead of college, no matter how high of tuition the university it is. They ignore the value of college. Although sometimes college is viewed as critical by other people, we still can find its value, and how it is really beneficial for our lives, even if we don’t pursue a degree.
My philosopher is Martha Nussbaum, and according to her the examined life involves justice. My philosopher’s intended audience would be everyone, even though in the video it seems like she is talking to you, she would like her views on justice to be shared to everyone. Martha Nussbaum touches upon a few main points, she talks about how people with mental and physical disabilities need justice. People are just beginning to learn about people with disabilities and they clearly need justice in order to for them to have a content life. Martha Nussbaum also talks about how the people of society need to create a world that can be as good as it can be, she talks about the potential we have to make this a great world. However, it will take many people around the world to create the ideal life that Martha Nussbaum talks about. She also mentions how even people are different, everyone should deserve equal opportunities. The
Charles Murray, the author of, “Are Too Many People Going to College?” believes that we need a place to get the basics in order to begin and continue being educated, he says,” To live in the United States and not recognize Teddy Roosevelt, Prohibition, the Minutemen, Wall Street, smoke-filled rooms, or Gettysburg is like trying to read without knowing some of the ten thousand most commonly used words in the language.” Murray expresses that gaining some core knowledge is a necessity if a person would prefer not to be illiterate in that “field of studies.” College is a place to get more knowledge in a specific field and is not for everyone. The way people educate and learn is also very different and can affect the process. Education enters the brain differently for everyone.
"Education is the movement from darkness to light". In The Closing Of The American Mind, by Allan Bloom, Bloom argues that higher education has been drastically modified over the years and has ruined the psyche of today 's students. Once upon a time Americans dreamed of a better and brighter future, one that could transport them into a perfect utopia of societal bliss. Higher Education was the enthralling stepping stone for happiness. It inspired students to find their voice, while drawing from the past. It was a place where they could make mistakes and change their major once or twice. Today, higher education has become more about the career path and how it is more necessary than before. Higher education is no longer an adventure that allows the student to embark upon a journey of discovery and self-expression as it once was. This is due to the vigorous demands of the general society and how students today are required to maintain focus on a career that is valuable and not adventurous. Basically, we have lost touch with what makes this country so great; the impossible becoming reality. The creativity is gone. The belief that our imagination can grant us happiness if we work hard enough and believe is nonexistent. Higher education has separated the extraordinary and left us with dedicated, intelligent drones working towards the path that pays the most and will always have job security.
“I had a very privileged childhood and in many ways, that’s what I’m reacting against” (CHICAGO TRIBUNE ARTICLE). Martha Nussbaum was born in New York in 1947 to George Craven, a tax attorney, and Betty Warren, an interior designer. She lived, until the age of nine, at an estate owned by the Earl of Surrey. Nussbaum recalls this period of her life fondly and loved being near her mother and was adored by her father. She recollects her parents being happy together.
Martin Luther King Junior said, “Intelligence plus character-that is the goal of true education.” Higher education does not exist for the sole purpose of preparing students for future jobs; it’s there in order to prepare individuals for life where they are expected to participate in their community, their government, and the lives of those around them. Liberal arts, in particular, exist for the broadening of students’ minds in order for them to be successful not only in their chosen career but also in their lives outside of it. Liberal arts lost their past popularity during the last few decades, but they shouldn’t be disregarded in favor of technical and professional degrees because they still provide students with skills that are perhaps less tangible, but no less necessary for life in modern world.
When people think your blind people think you’re helpless, but there was one girl who outshined them all who think that. June Tina Ross, Tina for short had a dream of becoming an artist. People misjudge her because she is blind and doesn’t really talk. One thing amazing about her is she felt her way through her house and knew how it look like so she doesn’t bump into things. This is a story of a girl who surpassed everyone.
Colleges and Universities are windows of knowledge that many people try to break, in doing so, people are ready for the next stage of their life. But not many have the option to go the world where knowledge is everything, and end being a simple worker all his life. People would judge a person for not having a degree, bachelor and many more. But do they ever think that colleges or universities are really preparing you for any jobs, does a piece of paper worth a lot now a days. Freeman Hrabowski wrote an article responding to people that think educations is a waste of time, and it is called “College Prepare People for life” (Hrabowski). In the article he mentions many positive thing about going to college and what is the outcome of going to college. But I believe that, he hasn’t done a very good job to explain why college is a good place to go prepare yourself for the real world. I believe that college is very important for our life, but not many of us know if we are really learning something while being in college. I feel like colleges or universities has become a place where we go just to go or try to earn a degree in any field. Therefore, I believe that colleges doesn’t enhance our basic skills, doesn’t give us a certainty of us getting a good job, doesn’t give us the hardships of the real world and it isn’t a place where everyone gets treated it equally.

Today’s high school juniors and seniors apply to hundreds of college and universities a year, but why? What is the purpose of higher education in today’s world? Is it to obtain a degree in hopes of establishing a flourishing career, in order to make money and have a successful, content future? Is it to grow as an individual? On the other hand, is it for something as superficial as being able to attend the parties?
People in the past did not stress value of receiving a higher education because it was not as indispensable as it is today. Now, people perceive others not only by their appearances, but by their accomplishments. Employers always hire people with the most education and experience. The majority of students are concerned about getting a higher education throughout the years. Nevertheless, some people question the purposes of getting educated, and consider it meaningless. The concept of education has a significant meaning. It enables one to take control of knowledge and apply it. It is education what prepares the mind to comprehend and learn important ideas. A higher education is very important for an individual's success in
Higher education is optional, but to enter a respectable career, one must continue their education in order to achieve his financial and/or personal goals. Teenagers who attend college use their extended schooling to further obtain knowledge. The primary objective of higher education is to enhance one’s abilities for his future. A student can learn from school in numerous ways, but liberal education is not a way to attract students into further and higher education. However, students can learn a lot more through experiences that have affected their personal lives. I agree with author Mike Rose’s theory that education needs are reached to obtain a higher academic level by teaching students information that can be related to their personal
