In the book Foxcatcher, I could not help comparing Mark Schulz and me in terms of wrestling. I was a pretty good wrestler, but Mark Schultz became one of the best wrestlers of all time. He started his career later than me, he took losses harder than me, and he wrestled a different style compared to me. Mark Schultz’s progression through the sport was much faster than mine. Starting off his wrestling career as a junior in high school, made it hard for Mark to become a successful wrestler in high school . Although he started late, he had a very good coach named Tim Brown and had a good wrestling team with many future college wrestlers on it. “My coach was Tim Brown, a heavyweight wrestler and football coach.” (Mark Schultz) Because his high school team was very good, he was able to go to a college for wrestling. He became a very good …show more content…
He was a very Hands-on and an aggressive type of wrestler, he used his amazing strength and quickness on his feet to defeat his opponents. Usually, Mark did blast doubles (a football tackle) or big throws, both of which require a tremendous amount of strength to do on a professional wrestler. Mark was not very good on the top or bottom positions, (one man took the other to the mat, then the other covers him attempting to score more points by taking him to his back.) but he was good enough to get back on his feet and devastate his opponents with takedowns. (One person puts someone on their butt, knees, stomach, or back under control) I hardly ever shot in on an opponent, instead, I would wait for them to shoot in and get a defensive takedown in order to get them onto the matt. Top and bottom is where I excelled. This did not go well for me because when I faced people who wrestled as Mark Schultz had I am easily defeated. So overall his style of wrestling was much better than mine because he could get into the heads of his opponents, and physically beat them
I started wrestling in sixth grade. Even though I didn’t win one of my first seven matches, I developed into a successful wrestler. In high school I won tournaments and beat high-quality wrestlers. During my junior year I was determined to become a great wrestler. I worked harder than ever and didn’t let anyone stop me. That year I lost the Illinois state wrestling tournament championship match by one point. Over the next six months between my junior and senior season I was runner up at AAU national tournament and wrestled at Disney Land in Florida at the Disney Duals with over 50 other teams and only lost 1 of 8 matches. These are a few of my achievements in high school. Now that I am in college there are many
The reason why I like wrestling as much as I do is because there aren’t really favorites in wrestling, like there are in other sports. In wrestling if a coach has a favorite and that wrestler is J.V. there is nothing that coaches can do to make that wrestler a Varsity wrestler. Unlike, say Baseball if a player's dad is a coach, that player will most likely be a starter or play quite often, even if he isn’t that good. In wrestling you have to work for what you want, if you don't think you won't be where you wanna be. This lesson will help me later in life by showing me to work for what I would like, because if I won't push for that then I might regret it for the rest of my life.

While Walter Camp, the father of American football we all know and love today was established. Before the 19th century “football” referred to many number of games played on foot. Each one of these games had different rules; same were played solely using your hands and were a running game. Yet others forbid the use of the hands and were kicking games. Many football historians place the games beginning in rugby which began in 1823, due to its many similarities. One of the legends is that football was invented when Englishmen playing rugby grew tired of not being able to use their hands, so they picked up the ball and ran. Then in an endeavor to enforce the rules another player tackled the man who picked up the ball. Although we didn’t aren’t sure if this is true we do know that a variation of English rugby was taking off in Canada which later became Canadian football. This is important because it had a huge influence on developing American football (Saperecom).

I come from a small town called Kittitas. Kittitas is the type of town where a student knows the names of everyone in their graduating class. Despite its small size, Kittitas is widely known for it’s high school wrestling program. There are few communities that I associate myself with, and the single most influential of these communities is the high school wrestling team. Over the course of four years, I have gotten to know my teammates and coaches on a personal level, and they are the people that I feel most comfortable around.
Walter Camp founded American football in 1869. He is known as the “Father of American Football." Camp developed rule changes that cast the foundation of modern American Football. The sport started to rise and many people wanted to play or watch football. Steroids and concussions where main problems that are associated with football. Anabolic Steroids retain protein like the hormone testosterone to help build muscle. For football players, steroids are tempting because of the fast results in gaining weight and muscle in short amounts of time.
No one worked harder than Dan Gable. That being said, Gable’s work ethic paid huge dividends on the wrestling mat in college. During Dan Gable’s era in college wrestling, the competitor was only allowed three years of eligibility. Dan took advantage of every single match he wrestled. He compiled a record of one hundred and seventeen wins and zero losses going into his finals match of the Division 1 NCAA tournament his senior year. Racking up two NCAA titles in his previous years. He was on the verge of history, no one in the sport up to that time had even come close to what Gable accomplished thus far in his career. He wrestled a competitor named Larry Owings from the University of Washington in the NCAA finals his senior year. Dan felt the pressure of this match because of the hype and history he was able to make if he won. Dan was not himself in his final match of his collegiate career and lost thirteen to eleven against Owings. “One of the mind-boggling things for me in my profession and in my life so far has been why, how, did I ever end up losing that last match in college? I say that because I feel like there’s no way I should’ve lost that match, and it shouldn’t have happened. But then I look at what that match did to me, and I’m not so sure that I would change that either, because that match, that loss, probably drove me – even though it shouldn’t have, a win should have done it – but I don’t think
Just watched the new Netflix documentary, "Team Foxcatcher", where I learned that wealthy wrestling sponsor, John DuPont, (who ended up murdering Olympian wrestler, Dave Schultz in '94) inexplicably fired all of the African American wrestlers off of his team when he suddenly developed an aversion to the color black. Yes, that's right, DuPont decided to ban all things black from his estate. First DuPont forbade people living on the estate from wearing any items of black clothing. He even forced one of his wrestlers to sell their sports car because it was black. DuPont himself, sold off all of his prized black thoroughbreds. If that wasn't crazy enough, he then fired all of the black wrestlers off of Team Foxcatcher. At the time, one of them
I found myself a few years later, in junior high, still wrestling and playing basketball. I knew the choice between the two would come eventually, but I thought that it would be a much easier choice. I ended choosing to continue in wrestling, and cut my basketball career short. I soon became one of the best wrestlers in my class. I won all but a few matches throughout my junior high wrestling career. I felt like I was on top of the world.
With the removal of wrestling from the Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is also taking away many dreams for young wrestlers all over the world. Wrestling is a very mentally and physically challenging sport. “More enduringly than any other sport, wrestling teaches self-control and pride. Some have wrestled without great skill, none have wrestled without pride”(Dan Gable). To become successful at it, one must practice regularly and put in a large amount of work. In the United States alone there are over 260,000 wrestlers who have put in this work and dedication. Yet, this is only a small portion of the wrestlers in the world. With this being a small example of the world, it is hard to not think of the multitudes of young Olympic hopefuls whose dreams are being crushed with the removal of wrestling from the Olympics.
"Once you’ve wrestled everything else in life is easy" - Dan Gable. Ever since I was in middle school I have would always walk by this unusually foggy room where there would be many guys grappling with their opponents as they ran out of breath and still would still have the energy for the finishing takedown. The amount of heat coming from that room was not because it was 98 degrees outside, it was build out of sweat and hard drilling. During my Junior year, I decided to be a part of the wrestling team for the weight class of 99. On the first day of tryouts I was the only girl there, my legs shivered as I entered the room. Deep down I knew I had to work hard in order to be respected and taken seriously in the team.
There I was with 2 wins and on my way to the semi-finals. Only 2 of my teammates had made it that far. My first opponent the next day would be Bryce. As our team left the Pepsi Center and started heading for our hotel, there were some people disappointed and some proud of how we had wrestled. We got to our hotel and got settled in with
An African Proverb states, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." Throughout my life I have been involved with wrestling, and although physically I am not involved in the sport, I have been impacted by the coaches and the wrestlers. Wrestling drives an individual like no other. I believe wrestling helps make a person to be a stronger, not only physically, but mentally.
As a casual reader of the sports section of this newspaper, you come across many articles depicting the triumphs of local athletes. However, very rarely do these articles describe the actual athlete behind the success. Athletes come in all sorts of sizes and shapes. They range from the incredibly talented to the horribly uncoordinated. Some are great teammates while others would rather be a one man team. Certain athletes seek out attention from the people around them while others are modest and stay in the background. The fact of the matter is that there is a wide spectrum of different types of athletes that exist in this world and no two athletes are exactly the same. However, each can be put
