For this paper I decided to research Marilyn Monroe. To help me better understand Marilyn Monroe, I first asked the question of how did she impact America and how and why did she become so famous. To find these answers, I researched credible sources and took time to watch videos to help gain a better understanding of Marilyn Monroe. When looking at many different websites, I concluded that these different websites had the same answers to my questions. These websites explained her life is great detail and informed me on the many major life events that took place. Shortly after Marilyn was born, her mother, Gladys (Monroe) Baker Mortenson, was put in the hospital with what most doctors would call paranoid schizophrenic. Along with her mother, her grandfather had died when, Gladys Monroe (Marilyn’s mother) was just seven years of age and when Marilyn was only a year old. With her mother not being able to take care of her and not trace of her father, she was quickly put into the foster care system. To avoid going back into foster care Marilyn choose to get married to a man that had been her neighbor, named James Dougherty. She had also managed to convince herself that Clark Gable was her father, although it was not a possibility (Spoto, 1993, p. 45; 54). After growing up in orphanages, Marilyn realized the only way to be released from the foster system was to get married. Marilyn Monroe decided to drop out of high school and marry her boyfriend at the time. Her first husband was a merchant marine by the name James Dougherty (Hendrickson, 2000). Dougherty was much older than Monroe who was then only sixteen years old. Although like the marriages to her other two husbands, Joe DeMaggio and Arthur Miller did not last for various reasons.
