Marijuana as a Subculture Essay

A subculture is an offshoot of referential cultural but in essence very different from culture. The term subculture is commonly employed to signify shared systems of common values, norms and interests that distinguish certain people and societies from others. Thus, criminal or delinquent subcultures indicate systems of standards, morals and interests that endorse criminal or delinquent behavior. The numerous activities categorized in law as criminal are related to numerous delinquent subcultures. The standards, morals, or interests of these subcultures might back specific criminal acts, a restricted set of such actions (Anderson 1999). Trained criminals for instance are proud of their craft; manage their profession in order to keep them safe and their business proficient and usually stay away from other criminal involvement that might bring them to legal light. However, not all criminal subcultures that well organized. A number of are merely opportunistic, accepting several kinds of criminal behavior as opportunities come up. Hence specialization is rare in delinquent subcultures.

In my illustrative essay I’m going to be writing about legalizing marijuana. It doesn’t seem like a good choice for some people but legalizing marijuana would probably change things a lot in our state. Legalizing marijuana would cut down some of the crime rate since people wouldn’t be in trouble for selling or being caught with it. It would also help the people who has to have it for their medical condition. Another thing about legalizing marijuana is that marijuana doesn’t really have long term effects on a person’s health unless they start smoking at a juvenile age.

Most people realize that certain places like Oregon and Colorado have legalized the growing, sale, and consumption ( smoking/ eating) of marijuana. This drug is still considered illegal by the federal government. The reason that this is possible is that some of the population of the United States has ,for decades, either used drugs, have known someone who used drugs or may have even grown up in a drug using atmosphere in which their whole family may have done drugs. The history of this drug fueled counter culture began when the great war better known as World War I came to a close and when it did so did the traditional culture of living a simple life of being who you're supposed to be . It changed to being who you want to be, living with who you want to live with and the ideal that people have the ability to do whatever they want.

A subculture is a group of people that generally share attitudes, views, rules, principles, beliefs, ways of living, and behaviors that differs in one or more ways from the culture. Law enforcement has a very distinct police subculture that has ideas and values considered distinct from amid many working in law enforcement. Corruption happens when people use their position or granted powers to obtain a personal benefit. Police corruption occurs the same way only it can also be for the departments advance or for the officer’s personal profit.

All races and backgrounds use marijuana. Why are black Americans incarcerated at a much higher rate than white Americans, for using marijuana? The issue with racism within the American law enforcement is not as clear-cut as it may seem. Police training and tactics will be examined to try and understand what the real issue is with this statistic. There are many hypotheses and theories of why back Americans are treated so differently in the criminal justice system. Treating every American equally will help secure unity within the United States.

The social problem of legalizing marijuana has been an issue for many years. I argue that marijuana should be legalized in all the United States. Through research it has been proven that marijuana can bring benefits to society if it were to be legalized. Benefits include, assistance to those who have health issues, reducing crimes related to drugs, as well as uplifting the economy. Marijuana has caused various issues within the minority communities, those who live within a minority community are more likely to receive jail time if caught with the drug, if Marijuana were to be legalized this would prevent minorities from becoming incarcerated. In order for this social problem to be fixed, as a citizens we need to educate those who are unaware of the benefits verses the dangers of marijuana.

Living in the 21st Century, a majority of the laws and regulations that guide our daily lives have already been legitimized and written decades ago. Although a large portion of these laws still exist today, there is always need to revise and rewrite laws. In this article I will talk about the myths and beliefs of marijuana and compare them to reliable sources to form an opinion on whether or not marijuana is a relatively safe drug for medical and recreational use along with the physical and social effects to the user and their environment. Regard, this paper will not focus on any other associated topics such as the price of prisons, annual marijuana dispensary revenue, drug trafficking or law policy’s. Interesting accumulating evidence show that the significant negative impact of this drug outweighs the positive effects. However, the medical benefits of the drug seem on the process of chemical compounds as compared to the drug itself.
