The debate on whether or not marijuana is bad for your health has been going on for years. Even though it has it’s health benefits, it also has it’s health risks. Marijuana has short term effects, long term effects, can damage your lungs, and endanger a pregnancy.
What makes marijuana such a sought after drug is the chemical it posses, tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. When marijuana is smoked the chemical is absorbed through the lungs into the bloodstream, which carries it to the brain. The chemical acts on certain brain receptors. These receptors usually react to a natural THC-like chemical in the brain, which are important for normal brain development. When used at a younger age marijuana can damage thinking, learning, and memory. It will be harder for younger users to pay attention, connect dots, and build connections because of this. People who started using in their teens experienced an average of an eight point drop in their IQ between the ages of 13 and 38. Other long term mental effects are temporary hallucinations- the user’s will sense or see things that do not exist. They can also develop paranoia, or and extreme or unreasonable distrust in people or surroundings. Long term effects of marijuana can actually worsen the effects of schizophrenia and cause psychosis. The physical effects can consist of a raise or drop in blood pressure, increased risk of heart attack in people with heart conditions, and stroke. The constant smoking of cannabis can deform the structure of sperm and upset a woman's menstrual cycle, damaging fertility or making the user completely sterile. Marijuana is actually one of the only drugs that affects cell division, which can cause birth defects during a pregnancy. Inhaling smoke will actually cut off oxygen to a fetus’s brain, which also puts the baby at risk for birth defects. Women who use during a pregnancy are more likely to have placenta problems, which can cause a baby to be premature. A lot of babies born to women who smoke are born underweight, or smaller in general. It can affect the baby’s head size, foot size, or overall size. Newborns can have a higher pitched cry, delayed visual responses, and trembling. Growing up these children will encounter poor motor, verbal, spelling, and reading skills. These children have a higher risk for depression, anxiety, and even childhood cancers.
