Margaret Thatcher was born on October 13, 1925. Her original name was Margaret Hilda Roberts and she was born in Grantham, England. She was the daughter of a local businessman. Thatcher was educated at Grantham Girls' High School, which was a small and local grammar school. The family lived in an apartment above the grocery store that her parents operated. She had one sister named Muriel Roberts. Thatcher was first introduced to conservative politics by her father while she was very young. Thatcher’s dad was a member of the council of their town.

In 1953, Thatcher and Denis had twins named Carol and Mark. Thatcher qualified as a barrister (type of lawyer) once her training was complete in the year 1953. However, Thatcher didn't stay away too long from the political arena. Thatcher finally won a seat in the House of Commons in the year 1959. She represented the city of Finchley (that is a city in England).
In the year 1961, Thatcher was appointed parliamentary undersecretary for national insurance and pensions. When the Labor Party gained control of the government, Thatcher became a member of the Shadow Cabinet. This was a clump of political leaders who could hold Cabinet-level posts, but only if their party was in power.
Thatcher became a dominant force in her political party, even though the Conservative Party was nose-diving in 1974. Thatcher beat out Heath as leader of the Conservative Party in 1975. This made Margaret Thatcher the very first woman to serve as the leader of the opposition in the House of Commons. This was a time of economic and political turmoil in England. The government was nearly bankrupt, there was a rise in employment, and there were major conflicts with labor unions. The instability of the nation aided in the return of the Conservatives to power in the year 1979. In April of 1982, the Falkland Islands were attacked by Argentina. This was a long source of conflict between the two countries since the Falkland Islands are just off the coast of Argentina. Thatcher quickly pushed British troops to the Islands to take back what was stolen from England. This would become known as the Falklands War, which England won as Argentina waved their white flag in 1982.
During her second term, Thatcher was forced to handle several conflicts. One of the most significant of these was the assassination attempt on Thatcher’s life in the year of 1984. The Irish Public Army had plotted to kill Thatcher by a bomb planted at the Conservative Conference in October in the city of Brighton. Unharmed, Thatcher continued the conference and even presented a speech the next day.
Thatcher again tried for leadership of the party, but she fell to peer pressure as her party didn’t want her to run again, and she announced that she was going to resign on November 22 in the year 1990.
