Marching Band Concert Report

Phil Smith, band director of the Penzville High School Marching Band, would like for the principal to increase his extracurricular pay. Mr. Smith specifically has asked that the extracurricular pay be raised to be equal to that of the head football coach’s compensation. Mr. Smith’s justification for his request is based on the band’s outstanding growth and performance:

Exposition IV: An Appalachian Spring, is a performance of various musicians within Virginia Tech’s School of Performing Arts. The event took place at Moss Arts Center in the Anne and Ellen Fife theater, with musicians stationed on stage and on the side balconies. A different instrument section played each segment of the performance, including: horn ensemble, string ensemble, bassoonists, percussion ensemble, jazz ensemble, the Linux Laptop Orchestra, Kinect sensor and computer, and male and female choirs. This exposition was held in order to benefit the performing arts scholarship program at Virginia Tech, but it seemed that the performance had the goal of showing off the individual ensemble’s talents, and, in the end, combining those talents.

The Evergreen Marching Band and Colorguard (EMBC) has stewed in accomplishment, success, and hard work, for more than two decades. People don’t know, that we 're not just a normal halftime marching band--we are a competitive marching band. Like any football, drill, or soccer team, EMBC strives to compete amongst the greats. For a couple decades, EMBC has marched to success and we don 't want to stop now; however, the competitive program was close to being slashed this year, due to lack of funds. Students and parents raged at the thought of no competitive season. Competing is the best part for everyone in this program. If we lost that it wouldn’t be as much fun. We were so far in debt that if we couldn 't raise enough money, it would 've been game over.

As the holidays approach, joy is in the air, and many celebratory events are occurring throughout Denver, offering joy and cheer to Denver citizens. For Denver Citywide Marching Band (DCMB), the holidays have also provided an opportunity for its members to display their talents, among which were TJ’s seniors Cassidy Cobb, Jabril Jeylani, Khem Shem Toure’, and freshman Julia Moir. TJ’s talented Spartans showed off their skills on December 4th and 5th in Downtown Denver, and greatly contributed to the merry atmosphere.

On Friday, February 12, 2016 at 7:00 p.m., the Division of Music at Bob Jones University presented the Symphonic Wind Band and performed five pieces. The performance in Stratton Hall at Bob Jones University was a highlight of the European Travelogue, directed by Dan Turner. The program included A Moorside Suite by Gustav Holst; Three Revolutionary Marches by Bedrich Smetana; Spring: Overture for Wind Orchestra by Johan de Meij; Galop, from Genevieve de Brabant by Jacques Offenbach; Ile-de-France from Suite Francaise by Darius Milhaud; and Danceries by Kenneth Hesketh. Each piece was concluded with eager applause and praise.

It began during my 8th grade year, I started to play in the marching band for the football games and parades. Percussion was my cup of tea because I know that I could nail it by reading and memorizing the music more often. It took me days to memorize my music for the half-time performances, especially for the parades. Meanwhile at the football field for the first time ever, I begin to think that maybe it did not turn out to be bad after all. For the rest of the football season during half-time, I finally got the hang of it. Marching fundamentals was quite a bit confusing. So that took me weeks to figure out remembering the fundamentals before the half-time performance. Back then, I heard a person who was cheering on for me and it just made

“Mom, I don’t think I want to go anymore.” “Ella, I already paid. You’re gonna have to go” “I’m gonna die,” I thought in my head. I’m on my way to my first band camp. I joined my high school’s marching band a few months ago and have been working all summer on my marching and music.

Marching band has been the most time-consuming and enjoyable extracurricular I have participated in throughout some of middle school and all of high school. I marched alto saxophone when I was in the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades and I have been drum major (also known as field commander) since my sophomore year of high school. Having this job has been a huge responsibility, but it has also given me invaluable learning and leadership experience.

Along with that bring sunglasses, a hat, or anything you feel the need to bring, to accommodate the heat. Dont forget to have your binder, with your music in clear plastic pages. When I first joined marching band after seventh grade, I missed the first summer practice to see a concert. At that time, I had no idea how much band would come to mean to me nor the unexpected amount of dedication needed. Before marching band, music was merely a casual thing, but it has transformed this old hobby into a greater priority. After just one season, this shift was noticeable. I certainly did not consider missing two days of a Disney World vacation to march at nationals when first reading the schedule. But this beloved sport worked its ways in a few short months. Through two marching seasons and a winter concert, band became one of the most prominent activities in my life.

This concert took place on Thursday March 16, 2017 in the Atkinson Recital Hall located at New Mexico State University in the Music Center at 7:30 in the evening. The concert consisted of four jazz bands, NMSU jazz one and two as well Las Cruces High school jazz band one and two. The first the stage the NMSU jazz II, director by Pancho Romero. The first song they had played was “Primera Vista composed by Wayne Wallace”. Along with the jazz band they also have a few percussionists as well, on bongos, xylophone, and a drum set. The band also played two more songs called “Undecided arranged by Mike Tomaro/Shavers” and “Afro Blue arranged by Michael Mossman/Santamaria”. My favorite was the Afro blue song, there was a lot of solos which I loved

I have always looked to spend more time in music, so even with the challenges of marching band I have been the lead bassist for my school’s top jazz band all four years of my journey. Even with the time I spend in marching, I spend at least four hours a week creating music with my peers. In this I’ve not only been able to prove to myself that I can play, but I’ve also learned how to synergize with my fellow musicians to make something beautiful. I’ve been able to transfer this to my life outside of band through group projects and community service projects.

While participating in marching band, I have also gained many new experiences, friendships, principles, and musician skills. Deciphering music can be a challenge year to year, and each year the music has continued to expand my capabilities as a musician. Summer before junior year of high school, I was looking at a lot of standardized tests, essays, a heavier school workload, college applications, and getting a driver's license; my most immediate concern, however, was the soon to begin marching band season. Spring semester of sophomore year I had decided to audition for a leadership position in the band, and I suppose I was the best candidate because I managed to snag Section Leader for my instrument, clarinet. As the final days of July passed by, I anticipated the start of a season where I would be mentoring and teaching my fellow clarinet players the complex art of marching band. A few days before leadership camp I received a letter in the mail from the Head Band Director, Mr. Larry Brown, and immediately I knew things were not going to be what I expected.

On Sunday, May10 2015, a concert was held in The Broad Stage. The concert was played by Santa Monica College Symphony Orchestra, whose conductor is Dr. James Martin. For this concert, I would identify myself as a referential listener at this concert. I say this because I am not an expert in music, therefore it would be hard for me to be a critical listener. I wouldn’t be able to tell what went wrong with a performance even if some incorrect notes were played. I was more of a referential listener because the music was soothing and brought my mind to peaceful thoughts. This essay will tells my experience of the concert in order to persuade my friend to  attend a classical music concert with you in the future.
