Marching Band Application Essay

I started band in the 6th grade, I honestly thought that I wasn’t going to make it to my senior year, but here I am a senior in band. I am not forced to be in band I can get out at anytime anyday, but I choose not to. It is hard when you are marching and it feels like 100+ degrees. You feel like you want to pass out, but you just have to suck it up and be tough. Throughout the years I have been in band I have created friendships. I have my closest friends in band. I have created many memories in band that will last a lifetime, that I will share one day with my kids. I do not know what I would do without band. Getting in band has been the best decision I have ever made. Band has been the highlight of my high school years. One of the scariest moments I have experienced in band was when we messed up at U.I.L. contest, I was terrified I did not want us to make a 2, it all happened so fast. It was time to get our results, we made a 1, I was so happy. The judges said that if you were to close your eyes and listening to us, you would not know we messed up. Marching band was one of the most difficult/challenging activity systems that I have ever done in my life. But at the same time it was an inspirational and motivating aspect of my life. I have been a part of a band program since I was in fifth grade through junior year, so I know how to work in a team.While in the band program I worked with the community a lot,from marching in parades to fundraising.I also have learned the importance of being on time and the importance to sticking to commitments that have been made from this program and my part time job where I worked in stocking and customer service. To me, marching band was the most important activity I have participated in throughout my highschool career. The reason being part of the band is so important to me is because, for everyone who is in it, it more than just a school club. After four years of playing music, sharing experiences, and getting through high school with the same friends, these friends become family. The marching band to me is a second family, and to have this family is a feeling I cannot describe. Even though we all come from a different background and different lives, we all share the same uniting factor, which is the love to play music and not just that, but to share that love with everyone around them.

12. Skateboarding and marching band might not seem very similar with alike characteristics, but you would be surprised how I train for both of them very similarly. When I go to the skatepark I always am there for over three hours at a time. This means that I have good breath control. If a random person tried skating for three hours they would be passed out on the ground because they would run out of breath. That is the same thing for marching band. In marching band I will be running across the field while playing blasting into my tuba. In order to be able to do something longer, such as skate for a longer period of time, you must do a warm up. This means that I can’t just go to the skatepark and start shredding. I first should do basic tricks before advancing into harder tricks.

Imagine this: You’re playing football for your high school team, you have the ball and you’re running to score, except his football is around 90 pounds, and not only are you running to score the touchdown, you have to keep in step with 100 other players. This is what students do year round in marching band. We have to memorize how to play three songs and around 100 spots based on where we need to go on the field, all while keeping our backs, shoulders, and instruments straight, carrying an instrument that weighs 40 to 100 pounds, and marching in time with 100 other kids. All of these components are just the little parts that lead into something much bigger. We practice as much as other sports, every person counts as part of the band’s score, and what you do for marching band meets the requirements to be called a sport.

Most schools offer a variety of activities, classes, and clubs. I personally was never interested in school or anything to do with it. Then I came across band and was instantly hooked. Band has concerts, marching band, and you get to meet new people. Band is my favorite class and here are some reasons why.

Lastly, being in band has made a great impact in my life because, I love it, I love music, and I enjoy being in something bigger than myself. I love the feel when each individual comes together to be part of something bigger than oneself. You could join as an eighth grader, but I was way too scared. Ninth grade rolled around and I decided to join. My first marching show was named ‘Double Crossed.’It was set in the 1920s, which is my favorite time period. We had music from Chicago: The Musical and many other pieces.
