Tammy Lin ENGL 1302 051 Brittain 5/11/12 Trimming the Fat of a Growing Problem Obesity is becoming a major problem to many Americans as well as many people around the world. Being the second cause of preventable death in the United States, obesity increases the risk of numerous adverse health problems including breast cancer, heart disease, type II diabetes, osteoarthritis, colon cancer, stroke, and more. Obesity is defined as an excess proportion of total body fat, with a person being considered obese if his or her weight is twenty percent or more above normal body weight. A common way to measure obesity is by calculating the body mass index. An individual is considered overweight if his or her BMI is between twenty five and thirty, …show more content…
The people who stand in this position believe that an individual should have choices in the items he or she buy, and be guilt-free. In the article “Childhood Obesity: A Global Public Health Issue” published in International Journal of Preventive Medicine”, writer Amar Kanekar states that the main cause of childhood obesity in today’s public health crisis in both developed and underdeveloped countries is because of the disproportion between the child’s caloric intake and the calories effectively used for growth/development and physical activities. To these people, what we eat is not the sole reason of the cause of obesity; genetic, behavioral, and environmental are all constituents of childhood obesity. Moreover, many health-related risks are present when a child is obese; negative body-image and low self-esteem inevitably result in psychological and social issues. Cardiovascular disease, increased cholesterol levels, and high blood pressure are all possible potential health risks involved and that there is, indeed, “preventive programs that help regulate obesity by educating individuals about healthy nutrition and diseases” (Kanekar 2). According to a report presented from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, in the years of 2007-2008, there was an estimation that “16.9% of children and adolescent in the age group of 2-19 years were obese…The data collected for the same period shows that the adolescent (age group 12-19 years)
In the past three decades, rates of childhood obesity have increased precipitously. Between the years and 1980 and 2000, the prevalence of obesity has increased from 6.5% to 19.6% among 6 to 11 year old children and 5.0% to 18.1% among 12 to 19 year old adolescents x(National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2010). This condition is accompanied by many physical and psychological consequences for these children. There are two common postions in the debate about the causes of this condition. One belief of the cause of childhood obesity is that it is a question of “personal responsibility” or in the case of children, of “parental responsibility.” That is, increasing rates of obesity are due to
Obesity has become a national health problem. It is an increasing health risk factor in Unite Stated. Obesity had combined with the common sedentary lifestyle; example Stress, diabetes, increase blood pressure, heart disease is linked to the top cause of death, gallbladder disease, gallstones, breathing problems, such as sleep deprived and depression. As a result of obesity medical bills are higher, so the trend of increasing work stress, and general unhappiness are common factors of overeating and not enough exercise. Obesity has affected not only the children, but as well as parents. Parents are not establishing the role of providing their children healthy diets. By not offered fruit and vegetable. Friend of my daughter often have dinner with us said I never vegetable when I was child, they vane cook vegetable. American children are at a risk of becoming obese or is obese (“Journal of the Royal Society”, 2006). It is a shame the U.S is having problems with obesity and other countries are with
The American Medical Association (AMA) has declared obesity a disease. Obesity means that an individual has too much body weight that could possibly cause a health risk. Having a body-mass index (BMI) of 35 or higher makes an individual morbidly obese. A healthy BMI would be from 20 to 24.9. The United States has one of the highest obesity rates in the world with an estimated of 36% of American adults suffering from it. It is important to not label obesity as a disease because it leads 78 million adults and 12 million children in America into feeling helpless, and takes them away from believing it’s importance as a condition that is the result of eating too much and living sedentary lifestyles.
As most of us agree with that the health is the real wealth in the life. On the other hand, there are many different diseases in this word and each disease has its medicine. Three articles talk about childhood obesity. The first article is "One Student’s Advocacy For Change: Childhood Obesity" is written by Theresa Cast and published in ESL1080 – English composition for international students University of Cincinnati. This article focuses on reducing the number children that have obesity by educating children and community initiatives. The second article, Joan C Han, Debbie A Lawlor and Sue Y S Kimm wrote “childhood obesity” and published in The Lancet .The article is the predominance of childhood obesity in the worldwide, its causes and
Obesity is a medical condition where a person contains too much body fat that it could disrupt a healthy body. “Over one-third of all adults in America are obese; obesity is a major contributor to the leading causes of preventable death.” according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Most people confuse the definition of obese and overweight. Obesity is the state of having too much body fat while being overweight means a person weighs too much. People who are obese are at least 66 pounds over the ideal weight of their height. Obesity is defined by a body mass index, BMI. BMI is a type of measurement used to indicate obesity and in adults. BMI can be calculated by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by his or her height in meters squared.
There is a problem within the U.S. that affects many of our youth. One in four children within the borders of our country will become obese at a young age. Of that fraction, 70% of those children will become obese adults. The topic of childhood obesity seems to be an issue that many individuals disregard. My research shows that there are many underlining factors that contribute to obesity at a young age. These include lack of physcial education and also lack of parental control in terms of eating habits of the wrong foods. It is very important for parents to educate themselves on the products that they allow their children to consume.
Obesity is defined as an excessively high amount of body fat or adipose tissue in relation to lean body mass.[2] According to data from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), during the years between1988 and 1994, 45.3% of American white males and females, 60.1% of black males and females, and 64.5% of Hispanic males and females were obese.[3] Since obesity has been rising at an epidemic rate during the past 20 years in the United States, reducing its prevalence among adults to less than 15% has become one of our country's national health objectives for the year 2020.[4]
Obesity is a public health problem that causes worldwide concern (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there will be an estimated 2.3 billion overweight people aged 15 and above, and more than 700 million obese people worldwide by 2015 (WHO, 2016). In the United States, obesity has increased significantly in the last 20 years and it is estimated that 33% of Americans are obese (CDC, 2017). Monitor obesity rates related to public health programs that focus on reducing or preventing obesity (Ogden, et. al., 2015). Obesity can be defined as the accumulation of excess or abnormal fat in adipose tissue, in which excess or abnormal body fat negatively affects health
“From 1980 to 2004, the prevalence of overweight children ages 6 to 11 nearly tripled” author Tara Dea explains her position on the situation and presents possible reasons for the increase in child obesity. Dispute in America and all over the world and specifically concerning with youth, is a growing area of concentration. Is it the parents, socio-economic status, or television commercials that lead the child’s future into obesity and why is obesity such a scary thing?
Obesity is a new “disease” which is brought on by our living habits. According to a survey called “Obesity and Overweight” done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), almost two thirds of 60 million American adults are obese or overweight in the United States. Although many Americans are well-educated and understand about the negative effects of obesity, many of them are not aware of the problem. Thus, the CDC reported that there are about 15% of children ages two to nineteen in the United States are currently obese and all of them are considered at risk of becoming obese in their adulthood (“Obesity and Overweight”). Apparently, the number of obese young people is significantly growing and it needs to be controlled. This research will emphasize on different problems about American eating habit, and things that lead us to childhood obesity. Moreover, some specific solutions will be provided in order to help parents to prevent their children from childhood obesity.
One of the largest issues in the United States that is continuing to grow is Obesity among small children and young adults. Many in America seem to think that the quickest way in one’s busy life it to pick up something on the way home from work, school, daycare, etc. The whole reason children and adults are so obese in America is because they are filled with so much stress by the end of the day that it is “easier” to buy food already made than to come home and make a homemade healthy meal. A lot of time children in research has shown that children will not necessarily eat what the parent makes if it is healthy and therefore will make the child something “quick and easy” as one of my fellow neighbors has said. The purpose of this paper is to state fact about obesity in the world and how it affects the Health Care Costs in America. This paper will discuss what causes obesity, how it has affected the United States as a whole, and some preventative measures to stop it from growing into over 50% of the world’s population.
These include obesity, diabetes, and several heart conditions. Obesity is the term used for someone who qualifies as significantly overweight. A BMI (Body Mass Index) records weight in relation to height. A BMI of 25 is overweight and a BMI of 30 is obese. Obesity is not a disease in its self but it can lead to different health issues, some fatal. Obesity can be related to eighty percent of type two diabetes, seventy percent of cardiovascular disease, thirty percent to gall bladder surgeries, and forty two percent to breast and colon cancer. Unfortunately, obesity rates in people are rising rapidly. The United States alone had an obesity rate of twenty six percent in 2007. Some cases of obesity are gene related, but most other cases are a result of improper dieting and exercise among the individual ("Why Is Proper Nutrition Important?", Case Western Reserve University).
In discussion of child obesity, people have stated that fast food is the main contributor of this issue. On the other hand, there are tons of people who blame it on the parents. Some people have also said that the child should be responsible for their own weight, and that they need to make their own choice. Others even maintain that the government should interfere. The reality is that child obesity is a world’s problem that is taking away years of life of young adults. This is a serious, complex problem that can affect someone’s life drastically. These children are not able to get involved in a sports club. It has been said that these children have a lower self-esteem compare to a child with a normal weigh status. Not only that, but these
There are many problems in the world. Each country has special problems. The one problem that all the world has is childhood obesity . It’s one of the biggest problems in America. Obesity has become more than usual in the US . The definition of obesity is having an excessive amount of body fat. Obesity will raise the number of children’s health and diseases problems such as heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure unless children do physically activity (“ Diseases and Conditions Obesity” par. 1). Between 1980 and 2012 the number of obese children aged from 6-11 increased from 7% to 18% (“Childhood Obesity Facts.” par. 2). People must fight this problem . Children become dependent on their parents because parents feel sympathy for
Obesity is defined as having too much body fat and happens over time. Having too much body fat can risk your chances of heart disease, arthritis, strokes, and more. “In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults aged 18 years and older were overweight. Of these over 650 million adults were obese” (Obese and Overweight). As new technology advances fast food becomes easier to produce, thus making the population become obese and overweight. The symptoms that one may experience when they are obese is trouble sleeping, shortness of breath, skin problems, sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis. Obesity can be caused by someone’s lifestyle and environment; it can be avoided and treated. There are ways to control obesity and find out if your waistline increases so you will know if you are at risk of heart disease. For example, “you can measure yourself with a measuring tape. You may need a partner to help you measure accurately. The measurement should be taken at the belly line. A high-risk waistline is 35 inches or higher for women and 40 inches or higher for men” (Scott). Also, you can estimate your BMI (body mass index). To calculate your BMI: “multiply your weight in pounds by 703, divide that answer by your height in inches, and divide that answer by your height in inches again” (Obesity Guide). “Preventing obesity is important. Once fat cells form, they remain in your body forever. Although you can reduce the size of fat cells,
