Previously, he worked at a nursing home where he spent a great deal of his time socializing with his patients during their rehabilitation. He understands the importance of listening to the concerns and questions of the patients, and ensures that he builds a trusting relationship with each of them. Columbus Regional Health (n.d.) serves 10 counties in Southeast Indiana. The demographics include a predominantly Caucasian population of approximately 300,000 people (Economic Opportunities through Education by 2015, n.d.). In southeastern Indiana, about 140,000 individuals have employment (Economic Opportunities through Education by 2015, n.d.). Of those individuals, 15% of them, who are over the age of 24, have a bachelor’s degree (Economic Opportunities through Education by 2015, n.d.). Approximately 30% of the high-school students drop out in this mainly rural area with a flat population growth (Economic Opportunities through Education by 2015, n.d.). CRH’s MH unit provides psychiatric services to adults 18 years and older. Most patients have either psychosis or thoughts of hurting themselves or others.

Although the executive committee does not include behavioral health, psychiatrists, Mazhar Munir, MD, and Philip Creps provide critical behavioral health leadership. This team is charged with not only ensuring exceptional care for the underserved, but also keeping the organization afloat amidst the seas of fierce competition from rivals like Spectrum Health and Mercy Health.

As you know Community Health Centers serve a vital role in providing primary care, dental, behavioral, pharmacy, vision and a variety of complementary services to our most vulnerable patients and communities. Health centers generate millions of dollars both in economic impact and overall cost-savings to the health care system.

The mandate for the Homewood Institution is as followed. This Psychiatric Health institution has a national mandate that provides highly specialized care to all its individuals residing in Canada. They accept referrals from areas all over the world, however; even though the admission process is similar for all patients, the overall cost may vary depending on the approval of provincial health ministries and the type of accommodations needed for that patient.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, coordinate efforts in conjunction with states and other partnersto offer a system of health surveillance, which would monitor and prevent disease outbreaks, which includes bioterrorism. The goal of the agency is to implement strategies to prevent diseases as well as maintain national health statistics. Another role of the CDC is to safeguard against international disease transmission, this is vital as the agency has personnel located several countries outside the United States. I see the function of an organization such as the National Honor Society as one that is valuable to the community and also to society as a whole - an institution where student members are recognized and valued for their outstanding academic performance and love for giving unconditional service to the community and also an institution where those students go out and give service to the community. I also see the function of NHS as a good name to put on a high school resume and college applications. Universities love students who are well-rounded and NHS is a source for those type of students.

Health centers are a necessary part of all campuses across the nation. To have a health center on campus is a promise to all the students to provide them with quality health care that will help one maintain a physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual state of health. On the Sweet Briar College campus, that has always been a health center, however it has been moved from building to building from 1906 to 1925, where the infirmary was located in various buildings on campus, including the Sweet Briar House, and Faculty Row Guest House (Mary Harley Student Health and Counseling Center). Ms. Stanley enjoys helping people. When I asked her what she enjoyed most about her job she responded with “I love to see them come in hurting and scared, and with our tender, loving care watch most of them get better.” That shows she honestly just enjoys the idea of sick patients getting better. She inspires me to want to go into the medical field because of all her accomplishments.

Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre provided me with life lessons I will never forget—kindness and humbleness. Spending my free time in this facility has given me bliss. The patients became my family; I knew their families, their kids, and even their grand-kids. I spent hours getting to know these patients—their stories, their likes, their dislikes. It was refreshing to do their errands, to help them, to feed them, to care for them. At this hospital I learned more than what the doctors and nurses do. I learned more than the mechanics of a hospital. I learned about the patients. I learned what I want to do in life. I learned that eventually I would like to become a medical doctor—to combine my love of biology and assisting

As per usual, I volunteered in the operatory of the Allen Saxe Dental Clinic. Today, I was the only dental assistant working. We had a moderate patient flow, but we seemed to get everybody out in good time. I interacted with the front desk receptionist, hygienists, and the dentists. Usually I would interact with the other pre-dental students volunteering, but today no one but me was there. My favorite dentist was in the office today. She was so happy to see me and she requested that I work with her, even though I was actually initially placed with another doctor. My interactions with the hygienists were no more than just a simple hello and good morning.

As I grew, so too did my passion to learn all that I could about the profession and medicine. When I entered college I ecstatically enrolled in my first pre-nursing classes. I was more eager and inspired than ever before. One particular day stands out in my memory of my first year in college. Everyone, at some point or another, has one of those days. Life had caught up to me and I was feeling rather down. At lunch, I headed to the farthest corner of the lunchroom, wishing more than anything to be left alone. Then, what do I know? A young man comes sauntering up to my table and asks to join me. I wanted to ask him to leave, but instead, I smiled and replied with a quiet, “Of course”. We began to chat about ourselves and before I knew it, the clouds above me began to drift away. Kindness turned out to be exactly what I needed. After we said our goodbyes, I felt renewed and hopeful again all because of the unknowing kindness of a stranger. It's
