The term of Manifest Destiny originated in the 1840s and in the 19th century it was a belief that the United States will expand its territory throughout North America by influences of social, economic and political aspects. The topic for this research is about the Manifest Destiny and the Westward Expansion. This research highlights how manifest Destiny helped expand the United States territory. Manifest Destiny aided American westward expansion with contributions made by the Lewis and Clark explorations, Railroads and Telegraphs systems, and military conquests. The Lewis and Clark explorations contributed to the movement to the west. Everything started in 1801, when President Thomas Jefferson had a plan: to explore the continent of North America and find an all-water route across the continent for trade with Asia. Jefferson chose Meriwether Lewis, a soldier, explorer and his personal secretary, to carry out the exploration. Since he had already been in the army, Jefferson gave him the position of commander chief to lead a civilian militia of about 10 to 12 soldiers. Jefferson informed Lewis of the basics of geography, how to use the stars for guidance, and other useful tactics during their expedition. Lewis felt that it would be a very difficult job to be done by one person and asked permission from Jefferson to have another person help command the expedition. William Clark was an efficient choice: he was a very experienced commander in the field, had been trained in
Manifest destiny. The thoughts of Westward expansion. A country from sea to shining sea. What do all of these have in common? The need to take, to move west, and to expand. Many concepts of life were changed during the downpour of Manifest destiny, but the people who were delivered the most fatal, cruel blows were the Native Americans. Many were killed, others, their lands robbed. The ones who fought died valiantly, but with little outcome. All of the Natives deserved help, and recognition as an equal people, but in this case, if there was a way to travel back to help a single tribe, and you had the means for it, which tribe would be best to help, the Cherokees, or the Kaskaskia? In terms of their situation, and their needs, the Cherokee seemed
While Manifest Destiny and territorial expansion created conflict with foreign nations, including the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), and within the United States, it worked to unify the United States from 1830 to 1860 by strengthening the nation as a whole, creating economic opportunities for people from all different walks of life, and expanding the United States through the annexation of Texas and the acquisition of California from Mexico.
In the early to mid 1800s, Americans began to want to expand the country again. Some Americans did not agree with the idea of expansion, and wanted to remain complacent with the amount of territory that they currently owned. The nation was torn. There were supporters and opponents of the idea of expansion. Each side presented their points but we eventually ended up expanding.
Manifest Destiny is a term coined by John L. Sullivan in 1845 when talking about the annexation of Texas. He believed, along with other expansionists, that it’s inevitable that the US population would spread across North America because the land is given by Providence to the United States and that it’s natural that the land should be part of the country [Doc 1]. The idea of westward expansion and Manifest Destiny had positive and negative effects on the politics, society and the economics of the United States and
Manifest destiny and territorial expansion greatly united the United States from 1830 to 1860. During this time period, America was still developing and growing in many ways. America’s geographical growth, formerly known as Manifest Destiny, or westward expansion, was the beginning of many changes for the nation. Manifest destiny and territorial expansion united the United States socially, politically, and economically.
America’s Westward Expansion was published on suite101, an American History website, in February 2007 and was written by K.C. Morgan. K.C. Morgan is a professional freelance writer who has written various articles and blog posts that appear on a range of websites. After several years of writing fantasy fiction, she decided to write about the real world she faces everyday. During her years of writing professionally, however, she has covered a wide range of topics. The purpose of America’s Westward Expansion is to provide a very ‘native American friendly’ view of the manifest destiny ideal. This article, though very one-sided, had great value to me. In it the author stated that the famous phrase “manifest destiny” was coined by a journalist in 1844. This information enlightened me about the fact that the idea of manifest destiny existed and was being executed for many years before it was actually given a name. This was not something I had ever given thought to, however, I had the misconceived notion that the word came before the definition, which is a false statement when pertaining to any topic. Though it presented some very interesting information, this website was limiting in the fact that it only presented information that was very
Westward Expansion and the thinking of Manifest Destiny had huge effects on the American People, Native Americans, and even other countries. Westward expansion was the moving of American “white” people to the West of the Mississippi River which in turn caused Native Americans that had been living there to be forcefully removed to different reservations in Oklahoma and Kansas. Manifest Destiny was the thinking that Americans had the right too and inevitably would move West and gain new lands. This thinking turned the United States into a world power and helped boost us economically, politically, and militarily. Unfortunately there are two sides to every story and as positive as becoming a world power is, many Native Americans died and great treacheries were committed against them.
Manifest destiny and westward expansion was a tremendous key component to the growth of the nation economically because of the impact it had on native americans, women empowerment, and expanding the population of the country.
In 1819, the British and American governments agreed that the boundary separating their territories between Lake of the Woods and be set at 49°N latitude. This terriroy called Oregon Territory. Because of the population of European in this territory was sparsely, they did not decide who will control this area. The Hudson’s Bay Company preferred to leave the region open for the rich fur trade and not interest in encouraging settlement. United States was facing a rapidly increasing population in that time. So United States purchased territory west of the Mississippi. Most Americans were convinced that they will control all of North America, an idea called Manifest Destiny. The United States government encouraged people from the eastern states
While some were driven on what they believe was God’s will others saw Manifest Destiny as the historical inevitability domination of North America from sea to sea. Before, manifest destiny, many Americans had small families not by choice, but for the mere fact that many of the people would die before they would reach forty. By the mid 1800’s technology began to rise, and the life span for many Americans increased. The U.S. population grew from more than 5 million in 1800 to more than 23 million by the mid century. By the increasing of families in town many of the towns became overcrowded. At this point many Americans looked to the west for possible permanent homes.
Throughout the American history, we have seen “Manifest Destiny” at work, and how it has helped grow our nation. The idea of Manifest Destiny helped in creating revolutions that would help them find freedom in the U.S., but it also had some negative effects. Most believe that “Manifest Destiny” began in the 1840’s, when John L.O’Sullivan coined the term “Manifest Destiny” in 1845, but if we look closer we can see that even all the way back to the first settlers we can see that“Manifest Destiny” was already at work as in, the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The term is defined and recognized as, the Americans belief that it was their destiny given to them by God, to expand into the Western territories “ The whole continent was to be theirs.”1 We
Rapid population growth and overuse of the land east of the Mississippi River, coupled with the knowledge that there was an abundance of land for new settlement west of the river, led to the ideology of expansionism; the ideology became simply known as Manifest Destiny. Manifest Destiny and American Territorial Expansion, written by Amy S. Greenburg, deeply explains the motivation of the individuals looking to expand their settlements westward. Since the time of publication, we have realized that we could have handled the situation, in which we removed the inhabitants of the west from their homeland, in a better way. Americans believed that it was their God-given right to expand westward by destroying anything in their path. “…courageous pioneers believed that America had a divine obligation to stretch the boundaries of their noble republic to the Pacific Ocean.” (“29. Manifest Destiny.”)
In the 19th century there was a popular doctrine or belief that the westward expansion of the United States not only could happen, but that it was destined to stretch from coast to coast. For awhile, the nation’s leaders were unable to resolve the divisive issue of slavery. This belief was called Manifest Destiny and it eventually provided a larger stage for the growing conflict over slavery in America.
Manifest Destiny was a mindset that played a crucial role in the expansion of the United States, and if it had not been thought of, America would not be the way we know it today in regards to how big it is. In this essay, I will discuss how it helped shape America, how it began, how it would affect events that happened later on in American history as a result, and how it led to making America what it is today.
During the mid-nineteenth century, the rise of new territories increased the desire of Americans to expand into new territories in the western region. The term “Manifest Destiny” was first introduced by a magazine editor, John O’Sullivan, written in the United States Magazine and Democratic Review in 1845 to express the idea that the United States had a unique role in expanding the nation (OpenStax College 316,483). Manifest Destiny is widely defined as a justification of continental expansion as a calling to the American citizens to unify the land into the Union. I view Manifest Destiny as white males expressing their ideals of white supremacy unavoidably expanding new territories not yet defined by others (). With the new western land came the revival of the issue of slavery, should new territories become free or slave states? In several cases, the white settlers inflicted their morals about their policies and views of slavery in new territories acquired and bypassed all other principles of different races. They saw that their morals were above all and that they received a message from God to colonize the new land for themselves. Although Manifest Destiny posed conflict against Native Americans and slaves, new land and trade routes steered the United States to enter a realm of economic prosperity.
