I do not agree with all of Malcom X’s extreme views, however I could not read his work without being moved in some way. It is extremely powerful and thought provoking. He seemed to have had possessed an unwavering set of morals. It was not until I dove deeper into his background, and learned of his upbringing, did I reach better understanding of Malcom X. He endured racism his whole life. Never being able to get away. He was drowning in it, when he found Islam, it was like coming up for air. This courageous journey helped mold him into one of the most influential Black leaders of his time.

Malcolm X was born by the name of Malcolm Little in the year 1925, and his father was a baptist minister, while his mother took care of him and his siblings. His family was thrown into poverty after his father died in a car accident, ultimately he and his siblings were sent into foster care. He was rebellious when he was young, and ended up in a juvenile detention center for his actions. When he got out of the detention center, he had gotten into crime, drugs, and was arrested during a robbery and sentenced to 10 years in prison. The first most important part of Malcolm’s life was his time in jail. This represents the main idea of racial identity. His friend, Shorty, was a drug dealer. He got Malcolm into dealing due to the fact that Malcom needed money. Selling drugs, or hustling, was the best way Malcolm could see to final make some decent money. This represents racial identity because all the blacks thought that dealing was the way life had to be to win in the world of white supremacy.

He was also told about what he was going to do is the same think about what other ministers doing. So he was saying that do not look for me like a Muslim man, but look to me as a one of you. He was explaining that I am a black man and am going to fight for freedom. I believe in action, self-difference and am going to do anything that is needed. Malcolm lastly becomes known as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz and he starts to focus on developing a global unity between oppressed individuals in America before he passes away from a gunshot. Therefore, the three important changes that transformed Malcolm’s life was the names that he was remembered by and it was Malcolm Little, Malcolm X, and El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz.

Malcolm X, May 19, 1925 – February 21, 1965, who was born Malcolm Little, was orphaned as a child. At the age of 6 his father was killed, and when he was 13 his mother was placed in a mental hospital, after which he went in and out of various foster homes. At the age of 20 Malcolm went to prison for larceny and Breaking and entering. As a result of going to prison, he ended up becoming a member of the group known as, the nation of Islam, and after leaving prison on parole in 1952, rapidly climbed the ranks and became leader of the group.

Malcolm X a civil rights activist in the 1950s and 1960s took a stand for African Americans by taking a more confrontational approach in his activist speeches and writings, these actions influenced the lives of many African Americans with black nationalism and encouragement to fight for their civil rights. Malcolm X connects to the theme taking a stand by taking initiative and coming up with his own civil rights movement. Malcolm X was different from other civil rights activists because he believed in fighting back physically but that changed later on when he visited Mecca where he met other Muslims which changed his views.
