Making story quilts are one way that communities have worked together to tell their stories and bring about healing. After Hurricane Katrina, the staff at the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center in Mississippi wanted to do something to help their community. They are going to different schools to work with the children who have experienced the hurricane. The children were making
Besides Eastern Carolina Human Services Agency, Inc, where he works, he mentioned there were other resources out in the New River area. The Department of Human Services’ building is located near the shopping center, although, employees are relocating to the three-story floor
I have always had an unexplainable desire to help people in need through community service and the LIMS and EXPAND programs offer two more opportunities to for me to give back to the La Crosse community. Over the past few years, I have been involved in many service opportunities both in the La Crosse community and others such as traveling to Florida and Alabama as a part of the UW-La Crosse Habitat for Humanity
Basically the south has a huge market for patients in healthcare. Soon after Katrina, Tulane University Hospital was up and running to take in some patients. Later, Tulane University Medical Center took in some of Charity Hospital workers and patients. Since Charity Hospital was badly damage from the storm the location was deemed unfixable. In lieu of Charity Hospital a brand new state-of-the-art facility known as University Medical Center recently opened taking over ten years to develop with $1.1 billion dollars budget (Davino,
On September 14th myself and four of my investigators (Susan Hamil, Daphne Jenkins, Leslie Katsman and Seth Schrum) had the pleasure to partake in a KeyPoint Cares event. During the event, we worked alongside a local charity to help fight hunger in Seattle. OSL, formerly known as Operation Sack Lunch and in the midst of a name change to Only Serving Love, is a non-profit organization that was started by a local musician in 1989, who saw the harsh realities of homelessness in Seattle because of people searching for food in dumpsters following her late-night gigs.
For this service learning assignment I devoted my time and energy to working with Brooklyn Cemetery, the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia, and Athens Technical College. I participated in MLK Day of Service, which was created with the intent to “celebrate and honor the birthday of the famed civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr” ("There's Still," n.d.). This day of service stood to serve many different aspects of the community and benefited a wide range of populations, mostly in the form of environmental cleanup. Much of my time was also spent volunteering with The Food Bank of Northeast Georgia, whose mission is to “work toward ending hunger as part of an overall community effort to alleviate poverty” (Growing Seeds, 2016, p. 2). Well, Lake Side medical center is a corner stone in the Belle Glade community. Having this center in the Belle Glade area has many benefits due to the many services that it provides to the residence. One of the many services that the hospital provide is its emergency care. The emergency care is basically for emergencies. For example, if someone is bleeding continuously or coughing up blood they most likely will have to report to the hospital and the working nurses will provide them with urgent care. This hospital offers great services and save a lot of peoples life. If it was not for this hospital the amount of death that could occur each year if there was not one in the area. As stated on NBC News ‘more than 200 million children worldwide under age 5 do not get basic health care leading to nearly 10 million deaths annually from treatable ailments like diarrhea and pneumonia’. It has been proven that areas without a health care center seems to have a large amount of death each year.

Different cultures around the world utilize different techniques to pass on family histories. The Hmong culture makes story tapestries and West African tribes use song and oral story to pass on their traditions. In the poem, “The Century Quilt,” poet Marilyn Nelson Waniek shares the story of one family’s heritage and the role blankets play in telling the family history. Waniek uses the literary devices of shifts, symbolism and colors to show the complexities of the speaker’s heritage, and how the familial relationships in her life have shaped her.
The American Red Cross after witnessing Loyola University students carrying their belongings in pillowcases upon evacuating the school dorms due to the massive flooding associated with Hurricane Katrina. Soon after, New Orleans chapter Chief Executive Officer Kay Wilkins partnered with a local art therapist to create a program that helped children cope during the recovery process after Hurricane Katrina. In 2013, Disney decided to collaborate with The American Red Cross to extend access to the program to other regions of the United States. To date, Disney remains as a strong financial contributor to the program. Hence, The Pillowcase Project evolved into a preparedness program for elementary school students between grades 3rd through 5th (American Red Cross, 2016).

Imagine someone is lost, standing in a checkout line at a corner drugstore. They need directions to get back on the road. The couple in front of them is having a very engaging conversation, fluently, in Spanish. Most would not even give an effort to talk or ask where to go, but why not? Too often the assumption is made that people who speak Spanish are immigrants, and do not speak English well. Hispanics are, persons of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American descent, other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race. Too often the assumption is made that Spanish-speakers are unamerican, lazy, receive low income, or are uneducated in any way. Hispanics are also demonized in the media as people who are stealing American jobs. That is the belief that some Americans associate with Hispanics.
