I attended University of Fort Smith’s play. This play was held by Hmong Student Association(HAS). (On their agenda, the skit was supposed to be thirty minute but it lasted about an hour.) This story takes place in a Hmong village in Laos. The currents and lights was welled used. The main character was put on the spot light when it is necessary. For example, the light became dim to the point that you can tell that it was night time. There were mini lights that helped make the setting well recognized. The clues that foreshadow the time and place is the set-up. The back-stage set-up was filled with rice field and there was a mountain. There is a Hmong house hut too. The tools to cut rice was on stage as well. Another reason why it will be a …show more content…
The play divided the story into three parts. One of each parts is a short story line of one of the daughters. The protagonist in this play is Tsis Meej and Mai Paj. I say that these two are the main characters because at the end, Tsis Meej and Mai Paj are the true role model in this play. They replicate the word moral. In the play, the mother’s responsibility is to teach the three daughters to learn what is right and wrong. In this story, Mai Paj is a hard-working lady. She will cook, wash clothes, go to the rice field, and go get water for the family. Her personality and the way she prioritized her responsibility puts her as the protagonist. As for Tsis Meej, he is a gentleman who loves helping elders, going to the rice field, helping family and friends. If I compare Tsis Meej’s character to the other guy’s character, Tsis Meej falls to be the protagonist. …show more content…
The mother’s character in this play stand out. Just like any mother out there, they have been through all hardship and therefore they always want their children to learn and know what is right and wrong. The costumes are funny and beautiful. For example, when the daughter who study a lot became a doctor, her looks and costumes looked perfect on her. She looked like a doctor. I loved how HAS’s play goes back to the Hmong village in Laos. It also showed how generations after generations has improved such as ladies being able to continue school. The acting was amazing! I loved the part when the mother yelled for her husband, “Where are you?”, and he popped out and walked to her and said, “I was still pooping!”. That was a great laugh.
All the moral lessons that the mother have taught to the three daughters, Mai Paj was the only one who listened. At the end, all the daughters now have a wonderful life because they reflected to the past lessons. The major conflict would be when the daughter’s life became a struggle and then accepting the lessons taught by their
I was particularly struck by the acting of Gracie Sartin. Her fearless approach to so many elements of the play – whether it was being hit on the head with an ironing board, hitting another costar with the ironing board, or giving one of her characters (Villian) an accent - was incredibly interesting to watch. Despite the fact that she portrayed six different people, she embodied them so well that I did not see Gracie in them. I saw only the characters she was portraying. The other actors were also successful in that ability. I think that achievement, combined with the success of the way the time constraints were embraced, added greatly to the success of the play.
Mai’s fear of losing the memories of her family leads her to realize the significance of her life and ultimately the possibility of losing her understanding.
Their different viewpoints in the play influence the conflict and theme later shown in the play. This play illustrates the theme that sometimes the right course of action is not what it seems, and that we should not be
I could feel myself being happy and laughing. The time was running but I was too focused to care about it. The stage was full because it had a variety of characters. There was minimal use of props. The big circular shaped giant seemed real which was beautifully designed. The catchy thing about the show was a girl saying Chicken licken many times which was noticeable and I think it caught the audience attention. The costumes were also beautifully chosen. As I'm a girl, I liked the dresses that were used by the princess. There was also a sound of the sky falling and there was a bright lighting of the stage. The play was beautifully played. I was not distracted by the show even though it had many characters and ideas going on. The favorite casting of the play was Robert Willian as he was full of life and I could feel his love and dedication towards the show. He was funny and good at it. The play had a lot of stories going on which had suspense as well. This might have created kid hard to
The way someone acts or makes decisions says a lot about a person because it shows their personality, and defines a character. Grandmother plays a very large role in the family's life. Love and care is constantly displayed throughout the story, especially since their grandmother lives with them and makes strong connections which builds their relationships. Through the story the character of the grandmother
The characters in the story are the mother who played a huge role, although her name was never mentioned. She is a mother who got a second chance at having a family and is very controlling thinking she is doing what is best or her child. The narrator which is the daughter; she starts off as a normal child in the story, but
I will be honest with you I had a lot of trouble enjoying the play, like I said the dialect gave me trouble, plus my seats were not that great. I did however like the movie quite a bit, but I realize I am a product of a different generation as well. I have been brought up around TV and movies rather than plays
One thing that I did not like about the visual components was the furniture and the costumes. I say this because in the playbill, the time and place is set for now in the English Countryside. I did not know this until after watching the play. Throughout the duration of the play, I was given the impression that this play took place somewhere in between the 1920s and 1950s. The plaid furniture just gave that kind of old timey feel. Also, the costumes were old fashioned as well. The mothers’ dresses especially, and also the police uniform aided in this thought.
She does go through struggles, however, this is kept quiet as she is not much of a sharer. She believes that any situation, no matter the circumstances, can be handled with somewhat of dignity. Last of the major characters is Pa Joad. He is careful and very cheery. He can not handle devastating situations as well as Ma Joad can however. At the end of the novel, he becomes less scared and is committed to protecting his loved ones. Pa Joad has given the role of the family leader to Ma Joad.
In this essay I will choose one character to analysis. It will be Dee the one who are educated and have go out to study. She was the lovely daughter for her Mam. Her Mam was waiting for Dee to come and think her Mam for all what she did for her. When her Mam was waiting for her outside the home. She was dreaming of a TV program and her daughter Dee is thanking her Mam for everything she did to her. When she sees her Mam she told her that she change her name to “Wangero Leewanika Kanjo” an African name. Dee change
To sum up, the text helps realize why the play involves around the topic of material wealth comparison moral behavior and social responsibility.
From start to finish the play was filled with emotion and cultural expression however, the flow of the play was very hard to keep up with in my perspective. Observing the play we as the audience are introduced to a few characters on a cargo crate attempting to flee africa for a better life in a foreign country. The transition from the individuals fleeing africa to the mystical aspect of the play was very confusing to me as a viewer. Another aspect that i found problematic in this play was the performance of Sunjata the character was well formated and situated however, I feel that the actor didn't full capture the emotions and sensations of a deformed flat headed child who is the brother of an insane madman who summons evil that is uncontrollable. The actor that portrays Sunjata does not fully express the emotions of a character that went through the journey of traveling and training from an individual who is deformed and can't walk or talk correctly to a warrior that stands tall against his insane brother. There were other slight disconnect between characters in the play and a slight sense of over acting with some characters involved in the play, which was not a problem
The structure of the story is divided into three interconnected stories, each of them containing stories in which can stand alone by themselves, but together tell the struggle. At firsts, the daughter is so young that she buys into what her mother wants her to be. Then she moves into a rebellious period, in which she asserts her
The two heroines share a harsh background; they both have had a rough childhood and are searching for a way out of their misery. Their lives are centered around the strategies that contribute to their rise. When writing this essay I was mainly interested in exploring how even the characters with smaller roles could affect the outcome, could shape the path the heroines followed towards their rise, but also wanted to analyze all the aspects through characters contributed to the liberation of the heroines.
First, let’s review the characters in the main story, of which there are few in the literary story
