Madeline Burillo became the official college president for Houston Community College Southwest on April 22, having the word “interim” removed from her title after seven months.
Burillo is ready to make sure students across all campuses enjoy and make the most of their educational experiences.
During her time as interim president, she has worked with community partners to bring workforce programs to HCC through centers of excellence at the Southwest campuses.
She is currently overseeing the construction of a new Center of Excellence and workforce building at Stafford campus, with its main focus being Manufacturing.
“It’s a dream come true,” Burillo said in an interview Thursday. She has been a part of the project throughout her tenure as interim president.

“The future is going to be awesome in terms of workforce programs at HCC,” Burillo says.
As for West Loop campus, Burillo has plenty of ideas on the table to enliven the student experience. By the end of the year, she plans on there being a Wellness Center in the back of the building.
Also, there are ideas for libraries to have technology enhanced learning sessions where students can share what they learned in study groups through projectors or their own tablets.
Pending approval from the Student Government Association, Burillo has come up with the idea called “Music at the Plaza” where students and faculty come together and perform almost like a venue.
“There have been different ideas thrown,” Burillo says. While she still not sure whether there’ll be a theme each month for specific music, she also has gotten with students on fleshing the idea out more.
“I really want to create that kind of environment where our students outside utilizing that plaza being built and having a meeting place [to perform music],” Burillo

Hillsborough Community College was first known as Hillsborough Junior College. It was established on October 4th, 1967 and was the 27th educational institute organized under the 28 other community junior colleges the council recommended. The founding president of HJC was Dr. R. For nearly 138 years, Brenau University has continued to uphold its slogan Extraordinary Lives. When I first stepped foot on Brenau’s campus in 2012, I wouldn’t have fathomed that four years later, this institution would shape me into the successful woman I am today. Prior to attending Brenau, I had always struggled with understanding who I was and where I belonged. Once I became a student at Brenau, I began to join organizations such as Student Activities Board and Student Government Association, and consequently, I have reached a social and academic success peak I never believed I would be able to achieve. If you are a first year college student or are transferring to a different institution, I advise you to take Brenau University into consideration.

Claudia Chan: Hello Patrick, I’m Claudia Chan, the Government Relations Manager at LaGuardia Community College. I am the liaison between government officials/agencies and the college. The programs offered here, specifically the musical groups (whether student-run or school-run) bring students and faculty together. There are a number of faculty ensembles, student ensembles, and even mixed ensembles, both instrumental and choral, that strengthen the community of the school. The interest of the students is in the school’s best interests; there are jazz bands, classical bands, orchestras, choral groups, acapella groups, and even theatre. These ensembles are a great way to make friends, pursue your dreams and give something more to a college education here at the University of
BRCC is a fantastic community college with great programs, faculty, and staff. Like any large business, there are always items that can be improved, adjusted, or removed. Of these items, three are presented for consideration.
When going on the tour of Misericordia, I was shocked by the amount of activities and programs it had that were not academic based. We saw the gym and multiple rooms where residents could express themselves through art. The art instructors told us that many residents either paint or draw or sew for pleasure but some of them also produce art that goes to the Art Institute for one of Misericordia’s largest fundraisers. In addition, many classrooms have a musician that come in and play music for the residents. For example, in the Learning and Motion branch there was a guy that came and played guitar and sang for the residents. Many of the residents sang along or danced. In addition, Tina mentioned how the music director does a lot with the residents and has music classes. She mentioned how all of the residents enjoy the music program and that it’s an integral part of the resident’s week. In addition, while in the Graceful Living branch, most of the morning was filled with doing various art projects. For example, I got the opportunity to do some arts and crafts with some of the residents and we were making a Valentine’s Day poster and Valentine’s Day
This can be seen in the small town of Lapel, Indiana. When Nicole Flora, a member of the Lapel High School Marching Band and the Lapel Concert Band, was interviewed about her experiences with Lapel’s arts education program, she said that Lapel has a strong, long-standing arts program and that it unites their community (Flora). The community of Lapel takes much pride in their show choir and bands, resulting in much support for the musical groups. In one instance, Flora was in a marching band show performing at the Indiana State Fair Band Day. The crowd began cheering as soon as Lapel’s name was announced, even before the band took their place on the field. The cheering only got louder as the show went on, especially during the famous Lapel Funky Chicken dance step that is the band’s traditional exit (Flora). Not only does this unwavering encouragement instill a sense of pride in the students associated with such a unified and supported group, it strengthens the community as a whole.
With not only the Smart Museum but also the nearby Chicago Symphony, the University offers a wealth of cultural experiences to its students. Within the University, I can participate in music and art in a well-rounded education. I would love to play oboe and English horn and percussion within the university. The University satisfies my desires for artistic opportunities outside of class, both within the school and within the city.
Central Campus is served for those who just want to relax to those who are doing small events to big events. I believe that Central Campus does serve the purpose of the design because the space is opened to everyone is surround by trees, bushes, and flowers. The space also provides a place to for relaxation and peaceful area. I do think that the space could be designed a little bit different than the the way it is designed now. If I was able to change Central Campus I wouldn’t change a lot. What I would do is had some benches and gazebo, I would also surround the gazebo with flowers and bushes and vine plants that will wrap around the

As with any established institution, Bellarmine has room for improvement. We seek to establish a viable solution to the problems presented from various employees of Bellarmine. The most common complaints from current campus employees include tenure, lack of diversity amongst faculty, funding, and an insufficient IT department. This directly affects the culture of the campus because there isn 't enough money to spend on areas that critically need attention, such as the faculty, food services, and parking. Without quality amenities the campus will seem less desirable to prospective and current students. With a school dependent on tuition-based revenue, such as Bellarmine, it is important to have the most modern facilities and amenities to keep the University as prestigious and desirable.
