One assignment I’ve done well on this year is the letter we wrote to Anne Northrup. In the letter we had to use primarily: ethos, pathos, and logos to convince Mrs.Northrup to do something we would like her to do. On this particular assignment, my improvement on using these rhetorical devices was evident. I chose to use this assignment as backing evidence for my improvement on the use of ethos, pathos, and logos, because this it contains the best evidence for me to do so. All the rhetorical devices I used were highly effective such as these: “Aren’t college owners rich enough already?” and “Would free college for all U.S. citizens hurt owners even in the slightest way?”.

Her article has enabled me to understand the thought process that goes behind telling a lie. She justifies minor lies by using ethos and stating that minor lies prevents hurt feelings and that it is normal to lie. Radiolab presented a very compelling story of a lady by the name of Diane became witness to the lives of a young couple in their somewhat private domain. Diane shared her story of her intimate, but very one-sided interaction with her new neighbors across the way, whom never shut their curtains, with one Radiolab’s producers, Briana Breen. During their conversation, Diane breaks down as to what drove her to do the things that she had done and how she felt in the time of this interaction. Like many other listeners to this podcast, as well as the storyteller Diane, I will explain as to why her actions are justifiable.

In Dorothy Allison’s essay, Context (1994) she suggests that growing up in different a social class may have a negative effect on the perception others think of you, especially the person you are in a relationship with. Through the usage of anticlimactic sequences, ethos and nostalgia, Allison expresses there occurring terror in her mind that her lover will see her as inferior once she meets her family. The use of Allison’s emotional tone helps to convey the author’s purpose which is to inform readers of classism to understand the authors embarrassment of bringing her lover home to meet her family . The authors intended audience are induvial of all social-economic classes.

Mount Holyoke College is a women’s college in Massachusetts. In 1997, the United States Secretary of State at the time, Madeleine Albright, gave the commencement speech to the graduating class of the college. Albright uses imagery, hyperbole, a quote and exaggeration in order to inspire the graduates to see the strength they have as women. She urges them to use this strength to serve their country and support the current administration as they work hard to improve the country. To begin with, Albright uses imagery when speaking about the perseverance and achievements of women by saying that women are standing up everywhere, whether they hit a glass ceiling or rise from a dirt floor.

Zoe Yu uses the rhetorical strategies of anecdote and personification to affect the audience and achieve the purpose of motivating the audience to fight for native language loss. Yu uses the rhetorical strategy of anecdotes to achieve her purpose of motivating the audience to fight for native languages. A great example of an anecdote, is where Yu states, “Every summer evening at 8 p.m. sharp, my grandma and I plant ourselves in front of the TV. . . But what may seem like ordinary soap opera scenes are far more than melodrama and theatrics: Dialogued entirely in Taiwanese Hokkien, they’re artifacts of a once-dying language” (Yu).

On 1 June 1950, Margaret Chase Smith presented a speech to the American people and the President about the serious national condition happening to the country. Smith is talking to the American people to inform them about the unfair treatment of Americans when telling them they are guilty of being a communist. Smith worries that how the government is acting toward the American people may result in "national suicide." Smith argues that there should be a "Declaration of Conscience," which means there will be fair rules and fair treatment of the American people and not letting the government control them and destroy their lives. The first rhetorical device that Smith uses is credibility.

Cynthia, I agree with what you say about knowing who your audience is important. I think when you're writng a paper and you know your audience it will helpp you write your essay alot faster. Knowing your audeince in writing helps because you can understand what type of style you should be using, because if you are writing in a childrens magazaine you are not going to use large words that they wouldnt understand. And if you are writing in a newspaper for adults you are going to try and impress your readers with large and vivid vocabulary to keep them interested in what you're trying to explain.

In Anthony’s fourth paragraph, she discusses the idea that if women really are not citizens then they are subjected to living in an oligarchy. This raises an emotional response in the audience because women do not want to and should not have to be forced into being the lesser. Anthony’s second paragraph, in which she discussed the perception of mockery women were subjected to, also raises an emotional response in the audience. For example, “And it is a downright mockery to talk to women of their enjoyment of the blessings of liberty while they are denied the only means of securing them provided by this democratic-republican government- the ballot.” this statement evokes emotion because it allows the audience to see the humiliation women faced on a day to day basis (Anthony paragraph 2). The fact that women were not allowed to vote and were spoken to as if they enjoyed their liberty of law invokes embarrassment in the audience. This was effective because it allows the male members of the audience to feel the way the women did, in certain instances.

Mrs. Nelson is writing about the recent protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, where many white supremacists are protesting with former KKK member to get their ¨country back.¨ Nelson is writing to the American people who are staying silent. Nelson is telling them to stand up and speak out against open racism. Nelson talks about how her ancestors, slaves, were never treated right. Nelson talks about how many things still did not change. Nelsons tone throughout the article was angry. Nelson seemed very upset about the situation. Nelson herself is African American which makes her a credible person to write this article. The author argues U.S citizens need to stand up against racism, and she supports her argument with her angry tone, implicit claims about privilege, and appeals to pathos.

To keep the American tradition, President Obama signed an executive order requiring the loser of the Presidential election to leave the country. Obama stated "No Matter who that loser is".
