Macbeth's Expression Of Life

I remember the feeling in explicit detail, as if it were only yesterday. It was a feeling of complete awe, triggered by beauty that was unexplainable to me at that time. The source of that beauty was a play, and that play was Macbeth.

Shakespeare’s play ‘Macbeth’ is about the leading male protagonist succumbing to his ambition and need for power. Though Macbeth is liable for his own actions, he is not solely responsible for the events that eventually result in his downfall. Macbeth is corrupted by his wife, Lady Macbeth, as well as the three weird sisters. Macbeth’s contribution towards his downfall is his strong ambitious nature. Lady Macbeth is the person who induces Macbeth to assassinate King Duncan. The three weird sisters (witches) play with Macbeth’s ambitious nature and sense of security. Macbeth’s downfall is due to himself and two external factors.

As a virgin to The Shakespeare Theatre, I was pleasantly surprised when my recent encounter with Macbeth was a stimulating and enjoyable excursion. The two and a half hours I had predicted to be less than enchanting were filled with symbolism, and an overall attitude towards the Shakespeare classic that I had never contemplated before.

Times of intensity in a persons life often lead to massive changes in one’s whole outlook of how they see the world. In the play Macbeth, Macbeth’s entire character changed into someone that would be unrecognizable to his Act 1 self. His personal journey of going from a loyal, strong and dependable man, to a vicious power hungry murderer transformed him, illuminating his evolving understanding of what is truly valuable in life from being honorable, to power, and in the end simply living your life in a way that doesn’t result in such a massive change to the point that life is meaningless. Macbeth started as one of the most honorable men in the land, and everyone viewed him that way, such as when Banquo called him, “Worthy Macbeth” (1.4.165).

“Ambition is like love, impatient both of delays and rivals.” – Buddha. Buddha was a wise man and knew that someone who is ambitious can get very impatient when it comes to delaying their plan and having rivals that share the same goals. Ambition is often the result of one good thing happening which leads to one pursuing their dreams more and more. Although ambition can be a good thing, it can also be bad. Twisting people 's judgment on reality and making them perform actions they wouldn 't normally do. Such is the case in Macbeth where ambition causes Macbeth to go through with a murderous plot to become king that involves his wife plotting the murder and going insane. From the second scene, Macbeth is described by various other characters as a strong, brave warrior that is dependable in this time of war. Malcolm describes Macbeth’s fight with Macdonwald, portraying “brave Macbeth” (Mac. 1.2. 18). In response to Macbeth's victory, Duncan cries, “O valiant cousin, worthy gentleman!” (Mac. 1.2. 26). Shakespeare provides that Macbeth is a courageous soldier that is praised by all. Macbeth's strength is further emphasised by his label as “Bellona’s bridegroom” (Mac. 1.2. 62). Bellona is the Roman goddess of war; therefore her husband would also have to be an incredible warrior. Ross’s classification of Macbeth as bellona's bridegroom makes it apparent that he is the type of warrior that could be marrying Bellona.

Macbeth is a very complex character whom reflects man's thirst for power through the drastic changes of his personality; thus being one of the slightest reasons in which make this intriguing character, greatest of all Shakespearean’s well-known works.

a humans' five senses. This is so, because Imagery is noticeably present within many scenes. This allows for individuals to obtain a complete experience which includes all of the five human senses which is sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell. Act 2, Scene 1 is a perfect example of a scene that imagery can be seen within. Inside, examples of personification, similes, and metaphors can be found. With these literary devices added, it guarantees a better understanding. This is so, because they allow readers to create an image in their mind of what is happening while reading.

In the play Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare, universal significance is utilized through strong characters, such as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. They identify the human condition through the human nature, ethics and morals of an individual. Shakespeare uses the themes Ambition, Deception and Order vs Disorder to display how the human condition changes within strong characters throughout the play of Macbeth creating universal significance. In the story of Macbeth, Shakespeare shows us how easy it is for ambition to turn into greed, corrupting our human nature.

Shakespeare, via the protagonist Macbeth, pessimistically approaches the significance of life as Macbeth discerns that Lady Macbeth died. Shakespeare eliminates Macbeth’s dwindling sanity, consequently exposing Macbeth’s despair caused by the intolerable burden of time. In the scene, Shakespeare utilizes Lady Macbeth’s death as the undoing of Macbeth himself. Shakespeare tragically illuminates the trudging of time with rhythmic repetition, “Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow, creeps in this petty pace from day to day…”(Shakespeare 19). The repetition of “tomorrow” expresses the incongruous passing of time as after Lady Macbeth’s death, Macbeth no longer grasps onto a secure future compared to the beginning of the play and his foretold

Macbeth was brave and for Scotland he fought, From his courage, attention from Duncan was brought. Taking advantage of Macbeth’s vaulting ambition, He was manipulated to act upon witches’ vision.

Days go by quickly with fun or drag on and feel like you are being tortured; it all depends on what is going to be happening. It all depends on how your attitude is. It will seem like the day is dragging on forever if you are excited to be somewhere. I am super excited to see my best friend since birth in a couple days, but it seems like she will never get here because I cannot wait. I am also nervous for my government, anatomy, and English test so there does not seem to be enough hours in the day to get ready for those tests and homework. Macbeth has three different views on life than me when he is about to be killed.

F. Scott Fitzgerald once said “That is part of the beauty of all literature. You discover that your longings are universal longings, that you’re not lonely and isolated from anyone. You belong”. However, how could it be, that the longings represented in Macbeth demonstrate the longings of human nature itself? The author of the play, William Shakespeare, is perhaps best known for the thorough understanding of human nature represented within his plays, therefore, the constant struggle between the good and evil is evident throughout the play Macbeth as characters such as Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, and Banquo struggle between the importance of their morals and their strong longings towards power. In real life, individuals can find themselves relating to the characters of the play as their beliefs might transition from putting their longings before their morals or vice versa. Macbeth is a play in which the psychology of human nature is analyzed repeatedly as it encounters temptations and allows the characters to choose a path of light or darkness.

There are many famous lines that are still well known today from William Shakespeare’s plays. Macbeth’s soliloquy beginning with “Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow...” is one of them because it is emotional and makes people question the meaning of life (Shakespeare 5.5.18). Macbeth feels miserable after knowing that his dearest partner, Lady Macbeth, just died. Just like the first line of the soliloquy, “Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow, creeps in this petty pace from day to day to the last syllable of recorded time.” the days go on and on until he dies which is sad and true at the same time which makes him completely hopeless (Shakespeare 5.5.18-20). He was already overwhelmed with the witches’ prophecies, people trying to overthrow him, and not sleeping after murdering the former king Duncan and his best friend Banquo in order to become king. But the news that the person he loved and cherished the most just died puts him in extreme despair. He is at the edge ending his own life, “Out, out, brief candle.” (Shakespeare 5.5.22). There is no point in life when someone that was beside him the whole time, going through everything, and supporting him commits suicide. He realizes that all the hard work he did, is meaningless now. Everyone will die in the end anyway, “And all our yesterdays have lighted fools the way to dusty death.” shows how much he regrets doing the foolish things in the past and realizes that people all die in the end (Shakespeare 5.5.21-22).
