As Macbeth grows in power and eliminates threats to his position, he acts more on his desires than his morals. “The very firstlings of my heart shall be the firstlings of my hand.” (4.1.67-68) Macbeth uses symbolism to portray his shift in his actions from acting sensibly to protect himself and acting impulsively to secure his power. His heart in this quote symbolizes his true desires that have been disguised from others as he gains more power. The difference in leadership between Macbeth and Duncan emphasizes Macbeth’s inability to be a good king because he puts himself before everyone else to gain more power. Macbeth battles with his ambition and conscience throughout his leadership because he is given a prophecy from three witches that he will become king, and therefore he does everything he can to keep his position.
