People Are Not Flawless What makes a character a tragic hero? Most would say that a tragic hero is the main character who does lots of great stuff but is overrun by a couple of flaws. A tragic hero dies from a gruesome death. Some may think that there are two tragic heroes in a story, but that's not always the case.

A tragic hero is a literacy character who makes a judgement error that leads them to their own destruction. A tragic flaw is the weakness of a character that brings about a tragic heroes downfall.in three different works we see tragic hero from 1984 Winston smith in 1984 written by George Orwell, Macbeth written by William Shakespeare and Saddam Hussein a dictator. The authors of the two character show that there is such thing as a tragic flaw and they believe fate doesn’t play a role in their downfall. This impacts oneself and the world because these character show their u can’t control your flaw it would lead you to your own devastation.

A character’s tragic downfall is often influenced by other characters, but this is not the case in Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth. Macbeth conforms to the conditions of a tragic hero because in the beginning of the play, Macbeth is an honourable and trustworthy nobleman to King Duncan and all of Scotland. However, throughout the play, Macbeth commits evil deeds such betrayal, treason, and murder solely because of his ambitions to remain in power. Macbeth murders others upon hearing the witches’ prophecies and even proceeds to return to them to remain in power. Macbeth is influenced and manipulated by his wife Lady Macbeth and The Witches, but he is ultimately responsible for his own tragic downfall. Macbeth’s tragic downfall is caused by his ‘vaulting ambition’ to become king. Thus, Macbeth has no one but his ruthless, cruel, and greedy self to blame for his own tragic downfall.

Macbeth's murderous term as king was not his fault. In Macbeth by William Shakespeare, Macbeth had many negative influences that shaped his rise and downfall as king. Macbeth was easily manipulated and people in his life took advantage of his weakness. Even though the witches have some influence, Lady Macbeth causes Macbeth's tyrannical run as king and eventual downfall because of her dominance, pure evilness, and ambition.

By definition, a tragic hero is a protagonist that due to some tragic flaw loses everything he has. Throughout history, literature has always been filled with main characters possessing some tragic flaw. In Macbeth, Macbeth’s tragic flaw is his enormous ambition to become king. In Hamlet, Hamlet’s tragic flaw is his need for revenge for the death of his father at the hands of his uncle. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh’s tragic flaw is his need to be remembered. In the Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf, Beowulf also has a tragic flaw, excessive pride and the search for fame, which ultimately leads to his demise.

     A Shakespearean tragic hero starts out as a noble person; a great exceptional being who stands out. A tragic hero has a tragic flaw of an exaggerated trait that leads to their downfall and eventually to death. William Shakespeare often made his main characters tragic heroes in his plays. In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the role of the tragic hero is given to the main character: Macbeth. This is because he starts off as a loyal and well liked man in the beginning, but has a tragic flaw of ambition which ultimately leads to his downfall.

In order for a character to qualify as the tragic hero they must posses all of these qualities: high standing, a major flaw, and a downfall. A tragic hero is someone that is usually of royalty, of nobility, honest, or brave. During the story they usually show a major flaw or weakness. This usually leads to their downfall, loss of power, or even death. Many stories have tragic heroes.

   William Shakespeare has written many literary works - from his sonnets to his plays, each has it's own individual characteristics.  One popular characteristic that comes from his plays is the tragic hero.  The audience can always relate to the tragic hero and the many trials he faces.  Macbeth and Hamlet are just two of Shakespeare's plays that involve the tragic hero.  Through their nobility, tragic flaws, and dignity Macbeth and Hamlet prove to be tragic heroes.
