MLA Formatting Analysis

The first chapter of the MLA Handbook covers the very professional and rather mechanical process of writing a research paper. It begins by identifying the different types of research and the important skills developed by creating these types of papers. It then dives into the actual process of writing, beginning with the selection of your topic and suggests that the subject matter should interest you throughout the entirety of the writing process. A major chunk of this chapter is dedicated to exploring different research methods and sources, making sure you are aware of all of the information that is available. It also stresses the importance of using credible sources and keeping track of which ones you’ve used, creating your working bibliography.

Everybody has their own methods for writing; however, I believe there is always room for improvement. Chapter 3 in Everyone’s an Author has shown me that writing involves processes that need to be mastered through constant practice. It also revealed helpful tips on how to develop writing processes that can help write effective papers.

I agree with you, MLA was once upon a time the only style the I knew. I will be just like you always going to revisit the APA section in our library. I still hit some roadblocks but I would have to say our professor would be the best way to clear up all questions, or better yet lead you in the best direction to solve the issue.

Writers work from left to right when writing any type of writing. In some ways I do agree with Annie on her writing process. When I wrote my article about the new rule saying that people couldn’t smoke outside of public housing. I had to gather all of the facts and write the summary from there. There were key parts of the article that I needed to include in my summary of the article. When I wrote my article on “Focusing on Evidence: Nutella” like Annie did I have to go step by step to write a successful paper about it. I had to know what to include in the article and what I didn’t need to include it in. It’s very important that you know what’s right and what’s wrong to put in an article. When writing my Descriptive writing I based my writing around one idea. That paper wouldn’t be the paper that I wanted if I just picked anything to talk about in it. I had to make sure that I stayed on topic so that everything worked out. Annie Dillard ideas on the writing process was very helpful she knew what she was talking. Reading this really helped me understand my own writing

Ashford University Writing Center states that a paragraph has “three structural parts: a point, information, and an explanation. Point is described as the topic sentence where the writer is making a claim. Information is considered the supporting evidence such as details, quotes, percentages, or other details to support the claim. Explanation is described as an analysis or interpretation of the claim and the given information. In chapter 9, Writing Across the Curriculum, the process of reading and writing was investigated and explained in comparison to one another. The reading-writing connection focuses on drawing from students’ prior knowledge and cognitive processes in order to build learning. The authors mentioned that the writing process is a strong tool for exploring and clarifying meaning and the two major instructional components used are writing to learn (WTL) and writing in disciplines (WID). The chapter also focused on the subareas of academic journals and writing disciplines.

Overall you have a great start to your Unit 4 Assignment. Personally for MLA Format I would subject you not not double space in between paragraphs. I recommend instead that you add one more paragraph of information in order to achieve the 5-6 pages.

As you start you start your path to your adult career in college, you will have to write a lot of college papers especially in English class. You will loathe your life because all of the deadline approaching all at once but your English 101 class you will help you learn how to properly write a formal MLA style paper. Throughout your English class you will learn the necessary steps to write amazing English paper. You will learn how to spot fragments, comma splices and run-ons in this class. You will learn how to make a clear strong thesis, which a thesis is one sentence that is usually at the beginning of the paper, which is kind of like a question but sum the whole paper in one sentence. Having a strong thesis is very important because it is what catches the read’s attention, that one sentence is what makes the reader decided if they are going to like your paper or not, having a weak thesis statement can ruined your whole paper. You will also learn the different types and styles of pre-write which is very crucial in writing a paper. You will learn to not wait until the last minute to write you papers because all it takes it getting a bad grade once from doing that and you will never do that again.

The main difference between MLA and APA is the fact that you use one or the other depending on the subject of your writing. Usually, APA is used to cite writings that have a social science focus such as Psychology, Business, the Social Sciences, Economics, Medicine, and Criminal Justice and Law. On the other hand, MLA is often used to cite writings that have humanity focus such as Literature, Mass Communications, and Media. This is about all I knew on the subject so that is where my research came into play. I got all my information from the Purdue Online Writing Lab. From my research I found that there were not a lot of big differences between the two writing styles but instead just a lot of little ones.

This year was to be my fourth year in a row attending MLA. I spoke in 2006, interviewed for jobs in 2007, spoke and interviewed in 2008, and had hoped to speak and interview for jobs this year as well. When the job interviews did not materialize, I made the difficult decision to not attend the convention given the financial realities of being an adjunct faculty member. I regretted not having the chance to speak—especially on a panel titled “Today’s Teachers, Today’s Students: Economics”—but the panel chair volunteered to deliver my paper in absentia.

The different types of formatting I had to learn in college is getting out of hand. The all of the different formats are loosely connected. The MLA format and endnotes are very similar in that they are found at end of a paper, but you do not give put the author last name and page number after it. I choose to use footnotes, because my laptop cannot decide what it wants to do. Another difference is the lack of putting your last name before the page number in the header, but is similar is APA Format. American Psychological Association (APA) writing style exists for a reason and this reason is because writers' must give “credibility where credibility is due”(Walden Writing Center, 2015) . During my BSW program I learned this and also, the importance of integrity in college level writing. In my opinion, two aspects of APA that I think will not challenge me are direct quotations and listing references. I have to admit I prefer to quote intellecutual matter directly rather than, use paraphazing. I believe this is approriate to do if the quote you utilize is short and all of your agrguments regarding, the content of the quote, are your own ideas. Another thing that will come easily to me is listing my references. This comes easily to me because during my undergraduate education, I excelled in this area. The reason for this is because everytime I wrote a reference page I always refered to my courses APA manual.

But along the way I slowly started to except it because it really helped keep my thoughts and paragraphs organized. My biggest struggle with the writing process would be writing an annotated bibliography because I’ve never heard or written one for any of my research papers before so it was a brand new experience for me. As a result, of this being my second time writing an annotated bibliography I still struggle a bit but I slowly see myself progressing as I look over the critics I’ve been given in the
