1. Its not who you know; its who you get to know.
The book starts off by bring up the point of how getting to know people is essential for a good political carrier. Many great names in politics, such as Lyndon B. Johnson, used the tactics of having “allies” to get to the top. LBJ was horrible at speaking on TV and live performances, but he was a great people person. He would contact and meet every man who had an influence in Capital Hill and made sure that they liked him. Within the world’s most exclusive club in politics there existed an “Inner Club” which carried a higher power. A powerful man in this “Inner Club” was known as Richard Russell. LBJ know that this “Inner Club” held a high influence and it would smash anyone or any group that

It makes no sense for a politician to ignore his enemies and keep them behind him. When they have their enemies in front they give them no opportunity to sneak up behind him. Ronald Reagan was a brilliant man who knew that the best companion to him in his campaign was his greatest nemesis Jim Baker. The two were in opposite side in the election year of 1976, but now he saw the talent that Baker had and didn’t want it being used against him. This proved to be the best thing Reagan did for his political currier because Baker was the one that field managed the Presidents legislative triple play. The strategy of keeping your enemies in front of you can avoid having conflicts and makes it easier for the candidate to keep an eye out on …show more content…
The energy that you have getting mad and plotting plans for defeat can be used as fuel for the campaign. All the negative energy and the evil thoughts of getting even can be a distraction and can provoke a candidate of doing something that may cause him the end of his election. In 1994 in South Africa, the people were ready to elect their new President Nelson Mandela. Mandela had all the right to be angry and swear vengeance on the former rules, because they imprisoned him for twenty-seven years. But Mandela is a smart man and his time in prison served as a reconstruction of faith for him. He was ready to flip the horrible page of his life and was prepared to unite the people of Africa. “But the day we had been fighting for, the day we were working for has arrived. Let us forget the past. Let us hold hands” Nelson Mandela. His words of encouragement and his pure hart made him the next great president of South Africa. Getting ahead is essential for any politician wanting to win his campaign. Don’t use the negative energies to get even or get mad, use it to get
For example, Matthews tells the story of Lyndon B. Johnson who would go to extreme lengths to try and meet with other politicians. Johnson would shower and brush his teeth multiple times a day just so that he could have the chance to be in the same room with a bunch of them. There, he would seize his chance to speak to them briefly and try to make connections as well.
Popkin goes on to explain important components of the team, one of them being the chief of staff. He writes that “The single most important part of a successful team is a chief of staff strong enough to be an honest broker,” and to beware because Weak chiefs of staff are the biggest reason campaigns flounder.” The chief of staff’s ideal, major responsibility is to act as the “gatekeeper” to the presidential candidate and to make sure that the rest of the team is not giving too much advice making it harder to make a decision. A candidate who takes counsel from too many people such as analysts, family, or other may have trouble deciding who to listen to which could eventually lead into organizational issues as well as
He provides examples of how former presidents kept the powers of their enemies in check. Reagan got the nomination against Bush by successfully using his enemy Baker. Mathews explains that if your enemies are working with you, then they would not be able to talk bad about you since your views will collide. Also you will earn the trust of others to be open minded by having your enemies work for you.

The White House had seemed to be an impenetrable place in which the public could never get a glimpse into the inner workings. However, through the White House Daily Diary kept and LBJ’s secret White House recordings the public became aware of what went on behind closed doors. Future candidates can use this valuable resource to learn from Johnson’s unmatched political skills and how he came to such a large victory. Flattery, favors, and character were his main source to rise to the top. The more people on his side, the more power he accumulated. Viewers will notice over the course of November 3rd, 4th,and 5th how Johnson received many congratulatory messages and praise. The famous Johnson treatment is prevalent throughout the phone calls he made to several important members of the
Lyndon B. Johnson, the 36th president of the United States, was born in Texas, on August 27, 1908. Lyndon was the oldest born. Politicians ran in LBJ’s family; His father, Samuel Ealy Johnson Jr. was a democratic member of the Texas House of Representatives. LBJ struggled in school as a child, but graduated from Southwest Texas State Teachers College. LBJ started his career in politics as a legislative secretary to the Texas Democratic Congressman. LBJ’s first campaign was in 1937 when he was twenty eight years old. He campaigned with the energy of 10 men; he spoke in every town in his district and made over two hundred speeches. In turn, LBJ was elected one of the youngest members of congress. One could say that LBJ had an obsessive drive to succeed. This is evident throughout his political career.
Johnson’s first step after becoming president was to help the citizens of the U.S. and the world cope with the death of JFK. “American people actually were 190,000,000 dazed individuals; he had to give them that unity and confidence; he had to represent it to the world” (Wicker, 161). This was a great task for any man to take on and he did so with care. He showed compassion and provided comfort for the people, promising to continue the dreams Kennedy had and to make them become a way of life. These dreams caused most people to look up to Kennedy, and it turned him into a legend in the history books even though he did not accomplish all he had tried. To achieve what Kennedy had set out to do would take a great man, and a great man Johnson showed himself to be. He also “carefully honored the Kennedy legacy…and remained deeply respectful of JFK’s cabinet and top officials” (Schulman, 69).
Politicians who are obsessed with their legacy and power can easily deceive us. David showed Robert attitude and approach in different aspects toward the civil rights, media and politics. We are a society

Nelson Mandela’s Inaugural Address crafts a series of rhetorical devices that help set the hopeful, yet serious tone of leadership and gratitude. Two devices that stand out in not only his inauguration speech, but his work in general, are imagery and repetition. In this case, Mandela uses these devices meticulously so that they have a great effect on his audience: the people of Africa. Mandela’s use of repetition reflects greatly in his speech.
