The book starts off by bring up the point of how getting to know people is essential for a good political carrier. Many great names in politics, such as Lyndon B. Johnson, used the tactics of having “allies” to get to the top. LBJ was horrible at speaking on TV and live performances, but he was a great people person. He would contact and meet every man who had an influence in Capital Hill and made sure that they liked him. It makes no sense for a politician to ignore his enemies and keep them behind him. When they have their enemies in front they give them no opportunity to sneak up behind him. Ronald Reagan was a brilliant man who knew that the best companion to him in his campaign was his greatest nemesis Jim Baker. The two were in opposite side in the election year of 1976, but now he saw the talent that Baker had and didn’t want it being used against him. This proved to be the best thing Reagan did for his political currier because Baker was the one that field managed the Presidents legislative triple play. The energy that you have getting mad and plotting plans for defeat can be used as fuel for the campaign. All the negative energy and the evil thoughts of getting even can be a distraction and can provoke a candidate of doing something that may cause him the end of his election. In 1994 in South Africa, the people were ready to elect their new President Nelson Mandela. Mandela had all the right to be angry and swear vengeance on the former rules, because they imprisoned him for twenty-seven years. But Mandela is a smart man and his time in prison served as a reconstruction of faith for him. He was ready to flip the horrible page of his life and was prepared to unite the people of Africa. “But the day we had been fighting for, the day we were working for has arrived. Let us forget the past. Let us hold hands” Nelson Mandela. His words of encouragement and his pure hart made him the next great president of South Africa.
