Lying is a bad thing that people do everyday. It might be a small white lie or a huge lie but people lie everyday. Lying is usually used to get someone out of a situation, whether it be good or bad. In the crucible, abigail accuses mary of lying in her testimony because she wants her own ruse to keep going. She still hopes that somehow, these false accusations will help her win john proctor in the end. Abigail williams. Is not only lying, but she is lying and hurting people in the process. In the scene that they are in court, she continues lying about who is involved. The thing about her lying is she is beginning to say that really good people are worshiping the devil and people are starting to see through it. They do not see through it in
In the play The Crucible there was a time when someone from the play sacrificed a principle that is important for a person that is important to them. An example of this from the play is when Elizabeth Proctor sacrificed the important principle of lying to save her husband John Proctor’s name. What I mean by this is Elizabeth lied to the court when explaining if she knew about the affair between Abigail and John and she lied and told everyone she didn’t know about it because she didn’t want to give their community a bad image on John. Elizabeth was a good christian women that never lied so that is why John was so shocked when she told everyone that she did not know about the affair. She lied to save her husband. That is an example from the story
In The Crucible, Arthur miller writes, “No one was naked! You mistake yourself, uncle.”(Miller 144) In other words it shows that Abigail is lying about the girl who was naked and dancing with them at night in the middle of the woods. She told Paris that there was no girl dancing in the woods because she knows that they will all get in a lot of trouble so she start lying. This relate to my topic because it is about lying, and how the play started by how a lie drag another lie which lead to people dying.
Abigail lies to give her power over people especially the proctors because she’s ruining their life. The lies that are told by Abigail, causes destruction within the village. First, She’s caught doing witchcraft in the forest and Betty is later on affected by it but she pursued to lie about it.
Abigail is to blame for most of the deaths in the crucible because of her lying.
No matter what you may do to stop yourself from lying, you’ll never get away. Lying is just an characteristic of human nature that is always going to happen. In the play, The Crucible, many of the characters lie and are very dishonest, each of them having a different reasons. The straight forward Puritan idea often makes the characters to bargain their honesty because they feel like the only other thing they can do is lie.
Quintavious Kinney Mrs. Bowles November 20, 2014 5th period Lying in The Crucible Arthur Miller’s play is phenomenal example of how hysteria can spread throughout a small community. The play plots in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692 during the Witch Trials. The characters in the story use the trials to get revenge on their enemies. Although this may seem satisfying at the time, it eventually led to the downfall of salem.
In the play, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, many characters commit the sin of dishonesty, each with a different motive. The strict Puritan setting of the play often forces the characters to compromise their honesty because they feel as though their only solution is to lie. Even though Abigail and John Proctor did have an affair, Proctor denies the .Everyone will lie to save their life.Abigail,Proctor, and the rest of the girls are some of the people that lie.
Abigail Williams is an excellent liar because she keeps all her stories straight and has made sure everyone thinks that she is being truthful. In The Crucible, Abigail believes that she has “.. done [her] duty pointing out the Devil’s people. To be mistrusted, denied, questioned like a-...” (219). Abigail is a brilliant liar because she
The Secret Life of Bees and The Crucible follow similar themes despite their different story lines. For example both books center around a main characters deceitfulness. In Lily's case she does not tell August what her real origins are, despite August knowing all along. She leaves without telling her father and helps a convict escape from the police. Along the same lines Abigail lies compulsively repeatedly placing the blame of innocent people as well as getting Judge Danforth to believe her. Both characters rely on dishonesty to get themselves out of difficult situations. Even though their is a theme of dishonesty among the characters there is also a theme of forgiveness evident. Lily forgives T. Ray for some his actions even though they
During The Crucible Abigail Williams has a dishonest, conniving, and aggressive nature, which causes others in the play to be affected and many people killed. She is very rude and very mean to the others, and she lies about things to make herself look good, and make her look innocent. People in the village know Abigail as a innocent child, but she is really a evil person and she causes people to be harmed. As Abigail goes throughout the play , people begin realizes that she is evil , and that she has been lying.
In society, we are blind to lies that are taking place around us everyday. Small lies, big lies, lies right in front of our face, and we are oblivious to almost all of it. This is shown really well in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. Throughout the play, which takes place during the witch trials that took place in Salem, lies make up a big portion of the plot. Some of these types of lies that are used are described very well in Stephanie Ericsson’s essay The Ways We Lie. These variations of lies amplify the outrage created, through McCarthyism, and the Salem Witch trials that take place in the play The Crucible.
The phrase “honesty is the best policy,” applies to Arthur Miller’s history-based drama, The Crucible, in a variety of ways. The accusations throughout the story build on lie after lie after lie from those trying to protect their own name, thus putting the whole town in a state of confusion and chaos. Nobody in the small town of Salem, Massachusetts knows whom to trust anymore, after all of the false allegations made. There are three characters in particular in the story that, if they had told the truth from the commencement, the town would have been in a state of peace rather than mayhem. If Abigail Williams, John Proctor, and Elizabeth Proctor had been honest, many innocent lives could have been spared and Salem would not be in such
In a 2002 study by the University of Massachusetts, 60% of adults cannot have a ten minute conversation without lying at least once. For most people, no matter if they are morally good or bad, lying is an easy, and maybe seemingly harmless, thing to do. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, lying is a main theme throughout the play. As characters are faced with life or death circumstances, morally good people have to either lie to save themselves and others, or face the unjust consequences. Lying is generally seen throughout society as immoral, however, it is acceptable to lie when faced with a life-threatening or dangerous situation.
Geoffrey Silk AmLit Ratti November 23 2015 A Lie Is An End A society works best on trust and honesty. Without that, there is no base to fall back on. It is just building on an old unstable platform that will give at any moment.
Abigail is not only a liar she is selfish. She tells lies that hurt others in order to help herself and she is devious. In the court room she announces, "I want to open myself! . . . I want the light of God, I want the sweet love of Jesus! I danced for the Devil, I saw him, I wrote in his book, I go back to Jesus, I kiss His hand. I saw Sarah
