When I first read about the Luckyday Citizenship Program at Southern Miss I was determined that being a part of this program would help me make the difference that I knew I was capable and inspired to make. Through this program I would have a chance to study a major that I was passionate about while I was reaching out to my community and learning more about what it is like to be a leader. Throughout my school career I have strived to make the best grades and become a role model for other students including my siblings. As a past Co-Vice President and this years Co-President of my school’s Key Club, I have made opportunities for my fellow students and taken part in volunteer projects in my community. Through scheduling times and finding available …show more content…
I have always been concerned about having scholarships, but not until recently have I ever been frightened that I may not be able to to become a student at Southern due to money. In August of this year my dad broke his foot on the job. As a UPS freight driver that worked a ton of overtime and my mom being a substitute teacher, my parents were making a decent amount of money to raise all four kids including myself. My parents have always been determined to send each of their kids to school due to my dad not having that opportunity. He worked a lot of overtime to make sure that he could save money for our college, but he was already concerned about how much it was going to be. After his accident, Workers’ Comp put him on medical leave until the doctors said otherwise. During this time our income became half of what it originally was. Complications arose with the injury, but my father was finally able to go back to work this January after being out since August. Through this time, my need for scholarships became even more important especially since I was unable to qualify for a grant due to fafsa looking at last year’s income. Luckyday would not only be a program that helps me reach out to those at school and in my community, but it would give me a chance to study a major that I am passionate
I also know every college is expensive and in order to lower the amount of money being paid students get financial aid help. My parents would help me pay for my school. The cost to go to Penn State University to live on campus is estimated to be a total of $34,982. That is a lot of money and I believe the Lenfest Scholarship can help me out a lot each year. Especially right now that my mom is the only one working and my dad isn’t. My dad is not working because he had an accident while working and is consider to have disability. At this moment we don’t know when he will be able to return back to work. If I do receive this scholarship this will encourage me to pursue my dreams in college, my studying and hard work will pay off. I will feel grateful
These Scholarships could truly help me in a great way. Both my sisters have been in college for the past two years, one being in it for four. It has caused some cut backs to be done over the past years. Along with that, my family has gone through many financial issues and setbacks. With this scholarship, it could help me to lessen my thoughts
I’ve learned to participate in a community-geared atmosphere to enhance problem solving skills. I’ve realized JROTC’s values of service and teamwork were applicable outside of high school. I’ve accepted the fact that my individuality that has potential of improving my country. With those learned facts, I was given the ability to contribute to my community and feel motivated to better myself and those around me in ways unimaginable. All of this is done with the assistance of JROTC implementing citizenship skills into their core
In fifth and sixth grade, I was invited to attend The National Young Leadership Forum, an organization dedicated to serving academically gifted and talented youth. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to spend a week in Washington D.C., where I learned the qualifications of a righteous leader and to develop academic abilities and interests. I will bring my knowledge of leadership to sustain a school community in which students will strive to maintain integrity and trust with each other. By engaging in community service, I have an opportunity to learn experientially, expose myself to diversity, and develop a sense of responsibility. By volunteering in multiple ways in the last several years, I was able to knit hats for children in hospitals, help at a local food bank, create and donate bookmarks for third graders, and help at the Bellaire Public Library. Helping others has given me a great sense of satisfaction and I plan to continue working on various community service projects in the future. Born and raised to Israeli parents, I am benefited with bilinguality, traveling overseas, exposure to other cultures, and insight on global
Throughout the past four years of high school, I have done my best to try and stay actively involved in the community. I have been presented with some amazing volunteer opportunities such as Huron Safety Town, STAR Leadership Camp, American Red Cross, and Huron High School Girl’s Basketball Biddy Program. I spent over 24 hours at Huron Safety Town where I was able to help young students, mainly those going into Kindergarten, learn how to stay safe while on the road. I was also able to spend over 24 hours at STAR Leadership Camp where I was a councilor to those going into the sixth grade. I made sure that each student understood the importance of being a leader in today's society and how important they are to Huron’s community. Through National Honor Society I have been able to maintain in constant contact, approximately 10 hours, with the American Red Cross by volunteering in monthly blood drives. I have also dedicated 16 hours of my time to those young girls interested in someday being a varsity basketball player through the Biddy Basketball Program.
The Luckyday Citizenship program is an amazing opportunity to receive financial aid for college, and an opportunity to bring in students who show a passion for community involvement. I am interested in the program because it will bring me together with like-minded people who share the same interests and goals as me. It appeals to me because I want to meet people who want to get involved and do fun and helpful things for the community. I want to meet genuinely nice people with a passion for helping others. I want to meet people with skills and abilities that they use to do positive things. What I want to bring to Southern Miss and the Hattiesburg community is my passion for playing music and my desire to be involved.
This scholarship is very important to me in many ways. This scholarship will help me physically and emotionally if I receive money. For instance, it will make me stress less about how I am going to be able to pay for my tuition and fees and not have debt. Also, it will give me a way to purchase my books for the classes I will take.Since I will not receive financial aid I will have to apply for more scholarships. I plan to go to Northwest Shoals to be able to get my basics done and further my education and transfer to Wallace State to be able to become an Occupational Therapist it has always been a desire to work with many people and help someone out if they needed it. Some of my college goals is to be able to maintain a high GPA and do the
The intent of this scholarship is for financial need. Recently my step dad has change jobs which has cut his income significantly. This scholarship would really help paying for college, since I will also have 2 other siblings in college at the same time as me. I will be furthering my academic education at California Baptist University and will majoring in photography. Attending Cal Baptist will give me the best education as well as provide me with a Christian education. It is very important to me that I will have a Christian education and that I will be surrounded by a family like community. Some of my goals for the future are to become a photographer, learn to get out of my comfort zone and challenge myself, and get an internship over one
I am the oldest of four girls in a family of six and I will also be the first one in my family to go to college at Texas A&M University. I always thought that scholarships were just going to be bombarded on those who were in the top ten percent of their grade, but as I can see now, I was extremely wrong. It is an uphill battle to pay for college and that is something that I should have seen coming. I believe I need the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholarship to attend Texas A&M University because my parents may not be able to provide for my entire four years there.
I currently sit atop my class due to this hard work that I’m putting in to it. I plan to attend Mississippi State University this fall where I plan to major in Poultry Science. I have had chickens for most of my life, but I was unable to get them until I was able to pay for them myself. My parents told me that if I wanted chickens I would have to work to get them. Now I have close to 50 chickens that I care for daily. Going to Mississippi State has been a dream come true, but paying for it is a different story. I would love to receive this scholarship, so I would be able to relieve the stress that has come with my parents trying to figure out how to pay for my
I have been extremely fortunate to avoid many hardships. However I have faced a financially barrier, especially as I have set the goal to finance college without loans. My family is not poor, but we do not have enough money to put two women through university. I have taken the initiative to surpass this barrier by working and applying for scholarships. I started by attending community college first as it is less expensive. I quickly realized that the lower tuition was not enough and took a job at a grocery store deli. Most of my income has been placed into my savings. I have saved up a decent sum of money, but will still need help to pay for college. Now I am applying for as many scholarships as humanly possible. I have received scholarships
My mother has raised my brother and myself as a single parent since the divorce. She has also taken on the responsibility of taking care of her mother after some major health issues depleted her ability to care for herself. Our family has struggled financially with this one income issue causing difficulty to provide just the basic needs. My brother is currently attending Florida Atlantic University, and although my mother helps as much as she can, he has to obtain loans just to survive. I know that my mother will not have the ability to help me through college, so I am doing whatever I can do to eliminate the financial road block that is standing in my way to reach my career goal. Receiving a scholarship would help facilitate my ability to focus on my education instead of focusing on the ability to pay for
As a 4-H officer, student Council representative, National Honor Society president, student-athlete, representative of my electric provider, and an American citizen, I proudly gleam the responsibility of showing citizenship. Although choosing to live in a shell and not help anyone else would be grandly easier, I chose to be outgoing, helping others that would certainly lend their help to me. Through the opportunities presented to me and to the paths I have chosen, I display an array of citizenship towards my country and to the small, proud community of Shinglehouse.
I absolutely love all that the Luckyday Citizenship Program offers. I especially love that the scholarship winners are chosen not just by their grades, but also by their character. Although I feel that good grades are an important factor in any decision whether it be for a school, job, or scholarship, I believe that a person’s willingness to succeed and how they respond to different circumstances in their lives are equally important. I admire that the Luckyday Citizenship Program believes that these values and others are important as well.
College as great as it is, is expensive. It can be a burden just thinking about how to pay off our student loans. Although, one of the greatest ways of relieving this burden is through scholarships! If I were to receive this scholarship, it would help a great deal in relieving some of the financial need for my education. I have several siblings my parents are probably also worrying about too. It takes a lot of money to send four people to college. But with this scholarship, I hope I can alleviate some of the money for my brothers and sister. It would mean a lot to me if could make my parents by not having to worry about me as much. Scholarships like this are stepping stones for students like me trying to get into college. After I am done with college at Mississippi State, I will happily and diligently pursue my passion as a Computer Scientist. If I can receive a scholarship, it can begin the process of paying for the hike over the mountain of a college
