Love and Loyalty are some of the strongest forms of emotion and connection, and there are many examples of this in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Candy and his love for his dog are a parallel for George and his loyalty for Lennie because even though George and Candy get judged for keeping them around, they never let go of them. On pg 39 in Of Mice and Men, Slim says to George: “Funny how you an him string along together.” George responds defensively because he doesn't want people judging his relationship with Lennie. This also shows how George want to keep the secret of what George and Lennie’s relationship actually is. On page 22, George lied to The Boss by saying that Lennie is his cousin and that’s why they are so attached at the hip.
Lennie is attached to George because he needs him to survive but George also has an attachment to Lennie because he is terrified of living without him since he had always never had to focus on anyone else when he was with Lennie because of how consuming Lennie was therefore George will stick with Lennie through everything in life for a sense of security. Lennie and George were inseparable, and anyone from an outside perspective could see that. When George and Lennie first interview with the new boss, we can see George's protectiveness over Lennie as he answers all of the questions for him. On page 21, every time the boss tries to talk to Lennie, George answers for him. The boss says “You too” to Lennie while asking him about his previous work at Weed.
The relationship between Candy and his dog, George and Slim, and Lennie, and animals acknowledge loyalty. For example, my literary graphic includes in a table with men around it talking about letting go of Candy’s dog. It symbolizes the conversation Crook’s dog 's age and how he suffers from his health symbolizes how Candy and his dog were glued together since he was a pup. Candy states ‘“I had him so long. Had him since he was a pup. I herded sheep with him. ‘He said proudly, ‘You wouldn’think it to look at him now, but he was the best… sheep dog I ever seen”’(44). Candy’s dog is loyal and obeys Candy throughout his whole life. Candy has always wished the best for his dog. In addition, my literary graphic contains George mentally force to kill Lennie, this symbolizes, George not wanting Lennie to go through pain that Curley would put him through, “Slim came down directly to George and sat beside him, sat very close to him. ‘Never you mind… a guy got to sometimes’”(107). Slim knew that George knew that the right thing to do was let Lennie go, and the consequence Lennie would have if not killed by George. He Stayed beside George for moral support. Slim knew who’s gun he had in all, but agreed with George. For instance, in my literary graphic Crooks was to stay in the barn, this symbolizes, because he’s black,
Is the love of your friend unconditional? Would you care for them if they were mentally retarded? What if they had unpredictable behavior that could be lethal to others? This was the daily life and burden of George in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. George and Lennie are great friends that are two migrant workers in California during the 1920s. George is physically a small man that takes care Lennie. Lennie is unaware of his largeness and strength that has a gentle heart and likes to pet soft things. The story begins when the two men are dropped off by a bus two miles away from the destination of the farm they are going to work at. George and Lennie stop by a river to get a drink of water before they walk to the farm. When George takes a sip of water, he notices that Lennie is hiding something in his pocket. So George asks Lennie what it is, Lennie pulls out a dead mouse. Lennie says that it feels soft and he likes to pet it. George, out of fear, takes the dead mouse and throws it into the river. George tells Lennie that he could get really sick from the mouse.
Reese Jerauld Mrs. Browning Honors CP English 9 31 October 2023. A Rare Thing to Have How does trust and loyalty towards someone affect our actions and decision making? Have you ever been compelled to make a decision, not because it's the right one, but because of your loyalty towards a specific person?
In the novel of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck uses multiple characters to show how companionship is valuable in rough times. The author places the setting during the Dust Bowl and Great Depression. The Dust Bowl was a time of intense hardship and caused many people to lose hope. In the book, George and Lennie are ranch hands. They have been through, and taken care of each other in the rough times throughout the dustbowl. Steinbeck uses multiple unique characters to prove that people should learn how much companionship is valuable in rough times.
In Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck suggests that loyalty is important for people to have with one another in order to survive in the everyday world, both mentally and physically. George and Lennie are two men that travel together during the Great Depression. Two men traveling together during that time was bizarre. Having each other was very important because they each always had someone to talk to. Furthermore, George and Lennie actually protected one another.
George and lennie's relationship is very similar to candy and his dog They both have been with each other, They both had to kill the other, and one of them holds the other back. A example of candy and his dog being together is when candy stated ”well-hell! I had him so long had him since he was a pup I herded sheep with him”(steinbeck p.44). Candy has been with this dog since it was a tiny little pup and now it's old and ready to die that's at least more than ten years that candy and his dog have looked out for eachother.
“To get the full value of joy you must have someone to divide it with.” ― Mark Twain. Twain's words relate to Lennie and George in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, who divide their happiness and joy with each other. In the story Lennie and George are companions very close though they have their ups and downs. Lennie and George find a ranch to work on where they meet many people like Candy, who is an old man who lost his dog, Curley--the boss's son and his wife. At the ranch they get into many different things- good, bad, involving other characters and more. In Of Mice and Men Steinbeck shows that companionship is beneficial in many ways.
Having relationships with others who we consider superior shapes our identity. Furthermore, if we believe that we have a strong relationship with someone, then we trust them. We tend to let them influence our thoughts. In the book Of Mice and Men, the author, John Steinbeck incorporates examples of how relationships affect one’s identity. On page 6 of the novel, Lennie listens to everything George says and blindly follows it. When George questions Lennie, Lennie answers, “‘I...ain’t gonna say nothin’.’” Again on page 15, when George asks Lennie the same question he answers, “‘I...ain’t gonna say a word.’” George influence Lennie, who considers George to be smarter than him, just like in reality, where someone blindly follows what the wiser
Trust is something humans struggle with on a daily basis; it means to have a firm belief in truth and reliability in a person. Many children grow up believing that their parents are who they say they are. That’s what I always thought anyway. Until one day, all the trust I put into my parents was gone. I hated them for lying to me. I felt my stomach become a fiery pit of rage. They weren’t my real parents? Although Lennie trusted George with his whole heart in John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, George made the smart but difficult decision to kill Lennie.
The goal for many writers is to depict a specific understanding of human nature, and in many cases a discussion of the concept of friendship and loyalty is explored. Friendship, in literature refers to a relationship of mutual trust and understanding between two or more individuals, whereas loyalty denotes to one’s faithfulness to a commitment or obligation. Although both friendship and loyalty can add meaning to one’s life, it is arguable as to whether the addition of the two qualities is truly advantageous. King Lear, one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies is a play about a king who descends into madness after being betrayed by his daughters who faked their loyalty. Similarly, Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men also explores the concept of friendship
I think the book Of Mice and Men was a good tale of companionship. All throughout the story the main characters of Lennie and George were always next to each other and helped balance each others personality. Throughout the text the character George was the bossy more knowledgeable one and Lennie was the on the more mentally disabled side of the spectrum. Lennie was kind and he loved soft thing but the catch with Lennie was that he was a wide hipped individual (meaning he was a large individual in stature). He didn't know his own strength/power and that led him into major trouble with the ranch owners boss. because he ended killing his wife because she let him touch her soft hair and he rubbed to hard and broke her neck and
Lennie and George have a very close but very tragic relationship. George has to take care of Lennie and watch over him as a parent might watch over a child. Lennie always seems to get in trouble and always
Many people spend their lives pleasing others whether it is parents, teachers, peers, or bosses. There is a need and importance of obedience in human life because those who do not know how to lead must obey. Nelson Mandela, a South-African revolutionary and political leader, had many people in society who obeyed him. They obeyed Mandela, for they loved and trusted him. True obedience cannot be enforced it can only be earned. Mandela earned the obedience of others by leading protests against the apartheid and fighting for equality. Most of society views obedience as a choice and not an obligation.
George was a good friend to Lennie because he cares for him. Lennie’s aunt died a while back and George promised her that he would take care of Lennie no matter what. George was not forced to watch over Lennie, he made a choice and stuck with it. Also, Lennie was holding a dead mouse and he was petting it. George saw and threw it across the pool. (page 6) He did that so Lennie wouldn’t get sick or a disease. Finally, George and Lennie went to work on a farm and there was a woman. She was a man named Curley’s wife. George had heard that she was trouble and told Lennie to stay away from her so that he wouldn’t get hurt.
