Lower East Side Travel Guide Situated in the southeastern section of Manhattan, the Lower East Side neighborhood has long stood as an immigrant, blue collar region. Spanning the area from Canal Street to Houston Street, between the East River and the Bowery, this once semi-dilapidated neighborhood has been renewed in the past years to include many tourist attractions. Along what is known as restaurant row, on Clinton Street, there are now a number of fine and casual dining establishments, as well as shops and boutiques that appeal to the masses. In the early 2000's, a gentrification of the neighborhood ensued, resulting in a total face lift to the area. Large modern hotels and businesses, such as the Hotel on Rivington and the Blue Condominium, …show more content…
The original cultures and ethnicities that were prevalent in the Lower East Side, the Poles, Ukrainians, Irish, Italians, and Germans, are still seen in pockets here and there. Over the years, Bensonhurst has diversified and experienced a remarkable amount of change, especially in terms of the population. Bensonhurst’s diversity is not limited to just those particular ethnic groups mentioned above, there are also a lot of Albanians, Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and more. According to the statistics of the residents in Bensonhurst & Bath Beach Puma, NY, the most common country of origins is China, Ukraine, and Italy (“BENSONHURST & BATH BEACH PUMA, NY,” n.d.). While, there is a high relative number of people born in Belarus, Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan. Whereas the most common race or ethnicity is white, Asian, and then Hispanic (“BENSONHURST & BATH BEACH PUMA, NY,” n.d.). This once again reinforces the idea that the authenticity of Bensonhurst is changing, considering the Italian population is no longer as prominent and predominant over other ethnic groups. New residents are replacing former residents and thus, causing a lot of diversity and modification. Currently, Bensonhurst, for the most part, is divided based on ethnicity. The 18th Avenue section is highly populated with Asians, whereas the “northern blocks, adjacent to Borough Park” are popular with Orthodox Jews (Mooney, 2011). The southern blocks, near the ocean as well as the Bath Beach part are popular with Russians. The division based on ethnic groups suggests a restrictive kind of mentality in which people would rather stick with their own ethnicity rather than engage and reside with those
In the book “The Next Hundred Million – America in 2050” the author Joel Kotkin writes about the future of America when it reaches a population of 400,000 citizens. The central point of this book is that it gives an insight into the evolvement of metropolises, cities, immigrants, businesses, places of worship and families, both in early growing regions and in esteemed older ones. In chapter one: Four Hundred Million Americans it is said that “Suburbs are rarely dominated by one ethnicity, and alongside the temples and mosques you will also find churches and synagogues.” which supports the central point of the improvement and furthering of places of worships which wouldn’t have been so diverse if it wasn’t for the increase of immigrants. What do you think of when you hear someone ask “What is a gothic story”? Gothic Literature is the combination of fiction, horror, death, and romance. Within the two short stories Young Goodman Brown and The Man in the Black Suit, there is a character within in story, that is accused of being “the devil”. Although each story has “the devil” within them, their endings are two completely different ones. Young Goodman Brown is not similar to the man in the Black Suit. Young Goodman Brown ends up being all alone by the end of the story. While on the other hand, Gary is still surrounded by his loving family. The devil is said to be able to be do anything he wishes with just a single breath. “This was a special bee, a devil-bee, and it had come back to finish the other of Albion and Loretta’s two boy” (Gary).
A neighborhood that was once Irish, Jewish, Greek and African American has drastically changed throughout the years (Snyder, 2015). While New York is viewed as the cultural center, this area of Manhattan is now often referred to as “little Dominican Republic” as Dominicans immigrated to Washington Heights in the 1960s. After the end of Rafael Trujillo’s dictatorship, many Dominican families fled to the United States to escape civil unrest and political violence (Pantoja, 2005). Today, the largest population of Dominican born and descendants of Dominican Republic in the borough of Manhattan are living in Washington Heights. There is also a growing Ecuadorian, Mexican and Puerto Rican population in the neighborhood (Bleiwas & DiNapoli, 2015). These cultures are prominent within the streets of the Heights as there are a multitude of Latin cuisines, churches, botanicals and pharmacies that cater to Latin families. As the neighborhood shifted through the 60s and 80s, it seems to be undergoing a new
East Harlem is usually known for being a poor neighborhood. “In much social science literature on the neighborhood, Spanish Harlem is defined primarily by its poverty.” (Martinez).

I was up raised in a tight-knit Jewish community, in a suburban county in Florida. Having briefly visited New York City as a child, I become fascinated with the great city. I was simply amazed with the cultural vitality of New York, relative to the modest diversity in my neighborhood.
David grew up in the Soundview section of the Bronx, which was a middle class neighborhood with mostly Jewish and Italian families.
The main purpose of satire is to attack, and intensely criticise the target subject. This is superbly carried out in the classic piece of satire, Animal Farm. The main targets at the brunt of this political satire are the society that was created in Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, and the leaders involved in it. George Orwell successfully condemns these targets through satirical techniques such as irony, fable, and allegory. The immediate object of attack in Orwell's political satire is the society that was created in Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. The events narrated in Animal Farm obviously and continuously refer to events in another story, the history of the Russian Revolution. In other words, Animal
