As a low-income student, life can be very hard. There are many academic, social, and emotional pressures coming from many different sources. He or she is expected to overcome these obstacles that arise, and deal with them just as any other student would. I am a low-income student myself and I truly believe I have overcome such challenges, and rose up to the occasion of the things life has thrown my way. My passion and experiences will definitely lead me to leadership, service, and academic success at Moravian. Due to my family’s financial woes, we were forced to move from place to place multiple times. Almost every time, I was bullied for being different. Everywhere we moved, it was a low income neighborhood. I wasn't as rowdy as some …show more content…
This year, I took control of Welcome Team, which was a bit disorganized from previous years. So far, we have helped welcome incoming freshman at orientation, helped at Open House, given tours to new students, and helped hand out programs at the choral concerts. This is quite one of my proudest achievements, because I never would have thought that I could grow a club so much in only a few months. Especially since welcoming is such an important aspect of feeling included in an atmosphere, I thought that if Welcome Team grew, then perhaps social inclusion at Liberty would be more prevalent. I have also tutored other students at Liberty through National Honors Society. I have tutored students in Algebra, Geometry, Biology, and Spanish. One time in particular, earlier this year, I tutored a student who was in In-School Suspension. He was having trouble with his Spanish work, and I specifically remember his saying that no one ever really tried to ever understand him, and that I was actually helping him. I believe in that moment, I recognized the potential I have to truly make a difference in the lives of others. That is one of the main things I've always longed to
Poverty is on the rise all around the world especially across the United States. This is a problem that is affecting many aspects of life for both the victim and the people around them. Students from low socioeconomic backgrounds can still have the same success as the average student, but it takes a little extra effort and a leap of faith. Although it may be challenging for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds to achieve success in school and the real world, it is not impossible.

In my spring 2017 semester Kean awarded me the Freshman Trustee Scholarship for exceptional high school scholastic achievements, such as acquiring a 3.71 unweighted GPA and scoring 27 on the ACT. Whilst having such strong potential for collegiate success, there is a significant demonstrated financial gap in my parents' savings, where I must allocate my job earnings, and the cost for me to independently pursue a college education. Although my brother is diagnosed with severe autism and ADHD, and will remain almost absolutely financially dependent on my parents for his entire life, my source of financial need stems from being the eldest of five. In two years 3/4 of my younger quadruplet siblings, who are juniors in high school, and I will all
Being from El Paso Texas I always felt like there was more for me in other cities, but I never really got the chance to see what even my own state had to offer, but that all changed when I got accepted into Upward Math and Science. It gave me the push I needed in order to embark on my journey of becoming a well-rounded person. It gave me the real life experience I needed to determine if I would make it on my own when I go to college. Now I am able to see myself living far away from my parents which is something I cannot say for many of my peers. Upward bound also awakened something inside me. Before the program I was filled with self doubt when it came to many things, but spending my summer in Arlington with fellow students and mentors all
My effort to serve my community have been an immensely important area that I always try to expand on. From my hundred and seventy service hours, I have learned that giving back even in small amounts positively affects the lives of the people involved. My favorite memories of serving my local area is during the special NJROTC ceremonies when I am able to see the wonderful faces of veterans and military families when we present the colors or the veteran with a flag. Through school, I have been able to see the faces of incoming freshmen in my workroom mature into the present sophomores and the students today. In my church, I am apart of the Ushering team which assists with the service every few weeks. Through this, I am able to see the bright
Robert Frost once wrote, “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood and I, I took the one less travelled by and that has made all the difference. As a young, educated, black man I have already chosen to take the road less travelled. Life is a journey where you stumble and fall, but I elected to not become a negative statistic. While in high school I decided to start my college education early in the pursuit of bettering my mind and proving to my ancestors that their plight is being well-respected.
High School wasn’t smooth sailing for me and my GPA wasn’t at its full potential. With senior prom and all my senior activities it felt as if time was slowly but surely running out. High school was some of my best years but I was dying to graduate and attend college and be on my own but in order to do so I had to score really high on the ACT or SAT. I was so nervous while taking the SAT and I didn’t do good as I wanted to, feeling defeated I studied really hard for the ACT. Even though I studied the butterflies when I entered the room where the test was being administered wouldn’t go away but I did feel more confident. I took the test and waited days for my results. I was so excited that I scored a 24. I learned that if you put your mind to something you will succeed every time. I took full responsibility for my future and I planned on having a bright one. I felt as a weight was lifted off of my shoulders. After receiving the good news I applied to a total of four universities and I was accepted by all of them. Even though I applied to different schools my dream college was to attend Louisiana State University. Unfortunately LSU’s nursing program is not like an average nursing program. Sadly their nursing program is not located on LSU’s campus
I am writing to thank you for your generous $1000 Osher Initiative California Community College Scholarship. I feel very honor and appreciative to be the recipient of this awards.
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the form used to determine a student’s need under the federal methodology to determine eligibility for federal Pell Grants and Stanford student loans. What is very important and under discussed it the federal government’s opinion is that paying for college education is the student parent’s primary responsibility. This refusal let students with costly options to finance their education, since the primarily solution is to take out loans. The federal government should create more resources for students
I volunteered as an AVID afterschool tutoring prior to becoming an official AVID tutor. I helped sophomore students mainly in World History. I would help them with their homework, essays, and helped them review for their history exams.
Growing up in poverty meant always being in a pinch for money. This led me to my decision of seeking a job within the first month of my freshman year in high school. Thankfully, this decision led me to the precious self-taught skill of time management. I was able to build my skills until my sophomore year. I tried to take on more shifts at work than I could handle, in aspiration of saving up for a car, and consequently my grades began to slip. I acquired my first C in my favorite class: Chemistry. Being an aspiring student in the medical field, and a student who prides themselves on their grades, I was devastated. As a result, I soon reached the epiphany that one has to have priorities in life; I chose mine to be education. I discussed with my boss my situation and she gave me a set schedule of a doable 4 days a week. This allowed me to do my homework and studying in advance. This also permitted me to get enough sleep,
