Not many stories end in a death between two star crossed lovers, but Romeo and Juliet do. Romeo and Juliet takes place in Verona, Italy and is a story of the feuding of the Capulets and Montague families. Romeo is a 16 year old boy from the Montague household, and Juliet is a 13 year old girl from the Capulet household. Juliet falls in love with Romeo one night at a party at the Capulet house. I chose that the best theme for this story is Love Vs. Hate because this is a big romance movie. At the beginning of the story, the readers see Love vs. Hate when Romeo and Juliet are talking about hating their last names. The text states “Tis by thy name that is my enemy, thou art thyself if not a monk,” (2.2.41-42). Juliet says that she loves Romeo, …show more content…
Romeo and Juliet are willing to risk it all to be together and change their names for their relationship. They don't care whether or not their parents care or not, but they keep it from them because they know they will be very angry. In the middle of the story, Love vs. Hate is a very important part of the story because this is when the story really starts to become great. Shakespeare States, “I will not marry you, and when I do it shall be Romeo,” (3.5.126-127). Juliet is saying here that she doesn't want to get married right away in life, but when she does, it will be Romeo. This impacted the story because Romeo and Juliet ended up married behind their parents, back by Friar Lawrence. Paris has his eyes on Juliet and will soon try to marry her. Little does Paris know that she is in love with Romeo and they will be married until death. Love vs Hate happens here because she loves Romeo so much, but she hates having to marry someone that is chosen for her by her careless parents. These two are meant to be together and Paris should have no part in that relationship that these two are in. Toward the end of this story there is a good amount of love and hate through these
Hate is one very important idea examined in Romeo and Juliet and is explored by Juliet when she states ‘Here's much to do with hate, but more with love’ (1.1.166). William Shakespeare conveys the consequences of hate in his play through the ancient feud between the Capulet’s and the Montague’s, the irrational decisions made and the deaths that resulted. It is the ancient feud between the two families that lead to the irrational decisions made by Romeo and Juliet as well as their demise. It is questionable as to whether Romeo and Juliet’s lives would be spared if their families were not feuding.
In the book “Romeo and Juliet” there were a lot of events and actions that caused their relationship to fail. Themselves and their family played a part in how and what they do, causing themselves to be doomed. They had a love and hate relationship with no guidance and just judgment. Due to the different opinions, it will cause conflict between Romeo and Juliet and their choices. The theme of love versus hate in Romeo and Juliet is supported by light and dark through word choice, diction, and figurative language.
In real life, the examples that showcase hate has more destructive as love in real life would be the fight against hate crimes on
The hate all started with their ancestors and was unnecessary to carry on that long. There was a fight scene in the beginning that was also unnecessary and caused pain that could have been resolved and don't need to happen. Romeo and juliet's love wouldn't have been forbidden of theo parents resolved it and they wouldn't have had to keep it a secret and die. A quote that shows why the feud is to blame is “Since the plot of romeo and juliet is actually only one episode of a long feud, the young couple cannot escape the undertow and their families’ history” (Kershen 2). This shows that romeo and juliet cannot escape what their family has thrown at the. And were forced to keep their love a
Hate between more than one causes everlasting tragedy. Such as the young love between Romeo and Juliet. It was between two enemy families, the Montagues, and the Capulets. Romeo had found his way into the Capulet home for a feast for the friends of Capulet and family. He falls in love with Juliet at the party and he falls in love with her, love at first sight for them. There are constant quarrels between the rivaling families, which slowly tore it all apart between the two young lovers. The fights that Tybalt continues to start, over and over, eventually end in his death and Mercutio’s death. Soon after the Prince of Verona deems Romeo exiled from all of Verona, this severely breaks his and Juliet’s hearts, that now they can’t see each other at all. The two eventually kill themselves, which really strikes both families with grief and they apologize for all the fights and hate. This proves how hate will destroy the little bits of love that are still there. These families are against each other and the children from both sides fall in love, but due to the ignorance of the family feud they both ended their lives.
Juliet was to be married to Paris due to family obligation, and Romeo to be an honorable swordsman and marry a girl of his parents choosing. Juliet's father didn’t appreciate her not wanting to marry Paris and didn’t shy from voicing it, “Hang thee, young baggage! Disobedient wretch!/I tell thee what: get thee to church o' Thursday,/Or never after look me in the face./Speak not. Reply not. Do not answer me./My fingers itch.—Wife, we scarce thought us blest/That God had lent us but this only child,/But now I see this one is one too much/And that we have a curse in having her./Out on her, hilding!”(3.5.160-169). the disowning from her father pushed her further toward Romeo and the thought that this is love because she felt nothing of the sort from anyone else. Romeo and Juliet knew the hate of their names and that marring each other wasn’t the duty to their family but still wanted to risk it all for their
According to page 326 the Friar is released from fault, the nurse was banished, and the apothecary was hanged. At the end of the story hate won, but Romeo and Juliet’s love lives on and proves hate is powerful and so is love. In conclusion, the theme love versus hate in Romeo and Juliet is supported by light and dark through symbolism, diction, and word choice. The author reveals how Romeo sees Juliet through
Romeo and Juliet is an exciting story about two families that hate each other, but when the children of those families fall in love, conflict arises. Hatred is an important topic because many of the choices we make in life are influenced by hatred, especially when conflict begins. In the play hatred is first shown between the two families when the Montague servants anger and start a fight with Capulet servants and Tybalt. In the play, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, hatred causes conflict. Conflict is often characterized by disagreements and arguments.
Juliet explains how it is difficult for her and Romeo to be together because of their families. Juliet calls out to Romeo who is below in her garden, “O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name, Or if thou wilt not, but be sworn by my love, and I’ll not longer be a Capulet.” (Shakespeare 2.2.36-39) Therefore, if the two lovers could deny their families and not be known by the name of their families, they could be together in peace.
We can sometimes find it difficult to love when there is hate along the way. In the play Romeo and Juliet, the characters Romeo and Juliet hide their marriage because of the spite between their families. The theme that William Shakespeare is trying to show us in Romeo and Juliet is that you should strive not to hate so it won't get in the way of love. The first time this theme is shown within Romeo and Juliet is shown in the fight between Romeo/Mercutio and Tybalt and in the consequences of that fight (Act 3) which shows Tybalt who did not strive to not hate and dies because of his hate gets in the way of love or Romeo and Juliets marriage by way of Romeos exile. At the end of the play the theme is shown again by the family getting rid of their
The emotions of love and hate are at the forefront of the theme in this play by William Shakespeare. The Oxford Standard English Dictionary defines ‘love’ as ‘to have strong feelings of affection for another adult and be romantically and sexually attracted to them, or to feel great affection for a friend or person in your family’ and defines ‘hate’ as ‘a feeling of dislike so strong that it demands action dislike intensely, to feel antipathy or aversion towards someone or something’. However, words cannot portray such wide and powerful emotions. Love and hate include elements of life, passion, long-term bonding and dislike, disgust and loathing respectively. It is because
No one knows what would happen if their families could have settled their differences. Hate is the impactful force that drives the plot and character development within the play Romeo and Juliet. First of all, hate plays a big role in driving the plot. This is shown when Mercutio says “I am hurt”. A plague o’ both
This impacted the story because then Romeo plans to commit suicide. In the last act of the play, love vs hate is portrayed again. During this scene we see how much Romeo loves Juliet, because he is going to kill himself with his love for Juliet. “See what scourge is laid upon your hate, that heaven finds means to kill your joys with love,”
The Opposing Themes of Love and Hate in the Play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
What is more powerful, love or hate? In the case of Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare the answer appears to be hate. It takes no expert to see that the famous novel Romeo and Juliet is focused on these principles and loves struggle to overcome hate. No matter how you look at the novel it is apparent that people act as a response to enmity. Whether it is Friar Lawrence in his attempts to amend a long suspended feud or Tybalt's fiery and violent ways that lead to many troubles and deaths, the book tends to focus in on this principle of love and hate and how they clash. In the novel Romeo and Juliet the deaths of the two young lovers Romeo and Juliet can be pinned on nothing other than the
