In the science article, “What we can see about the Louisiana flood and climate change” by Chris Mooney, he discusses that Louisiana is always at a risk for floods, but climate change is increasing that risk. In this articles he argues that climate change has already shown increased rainfall in many parts of the world which can be part of the problem of flooding. But he also does argue that climate change had nothing to do with the floodings, although it is an effect climate change may cause. Overall in this article he goes back in forth with facts and statements on how this could’ve or couldn’t have been a climate change cause.
On August 29, 2005, the third strongest storm ever documented in America, Hurricane Katrina, hit the coast of Louisiana at 125 miles per hour. However, the real horror came when the levees breached, causing New Orleans to fill up like a bathtub. Gary Rivlin discusses the racial, political, and geographical change of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in Katrina: After the Flood. Gary Rivlin is a journalist and author of five books His many works have appeared in a multitude of places, such as The New York Times Magazine, Mother Jones, GQ, and Wired. Rivlin was born in New Woodmere, New York, therefore he had no connection to New Orleans. Most of his
Long ago at the time of Bernama lived a very poor family. In the family was the mom named Kate, the dad who was named Jason, the oldest girl Katrina and a younger sister named Gabby. There was a huge drought and none of the crops were growing. Everyone in the family was starving so it was up to Katrina to save her whole family.
Hey yah I think this is freaking retarted but I have to pass this class. Anyways some things I thought were interesting and kind of cool are that the Mississippi river created most of the Louisiana I didn’t know that a river could do that ya that is like so exciting however it couldn’t have made it if it stayed in one channel. Southern Louisiana exists in its present form because the Mississippi River has jumped here and there within an arc about two hundred miles wide, like a pianist playing with one hand—frequently and radically changing course, surging over the left or the right bank to go off in utterly new directions. (The Control of Nature February 23, 1987 issue Atchafalaya by john McPhee). In other words the river moving in all directions
Some of these critical issues caused major problems then should have been addressed prior to the hurricane many land. The delay by both the Governor and Mayor led to overwhelming issues relating to evacuating. Mayor Ray Nagi refusal to give the order to evacuate, but rather use shelters to house Katrine victims from departing the area. The citizen of Louisiana was unaware of the severity of the storm and they trusted their State leader to ensure the safety of the people. When it came time to get the people out of New Orleans the chaos of the disaster made providing help extremely difficult. Organizations like the Red Cross and Salvation Army were responding to the disaster had no real execution plan, the shelters were in disarray and no logistic
The Andrew Hurricane situation in Louisiana was destructive, but handled properly by all governmental levels. Hurricane Andrew was devastating and left thousands of individuals homeless. The milling process was implemented early and it ended quickly. In Louisiana the hurricane did not destroy most communication and transportations systems like in Florida. The local government followed the strategic plan that was established and was prepared to react quickly. After Florida, government of Louisiana prepared for the worst and created a plan after seeing reports from Florida. The people of Louisiana worked together and the Cajun culture had a major part of the reconstruction process. Louisiana has a very strong united Cajun community that is strong
Although, the blame can be also directed to human activities. Agriculture, cutting down forests, oil drilling, and constantly constructing building, roads, and cities. For example, from page 13, it explicitly shows, “The search for oil in the coastal marshes has hastened coastal erosion.” People might not recognize right away, but rash decisions can quickly endanger wetlands and marshes. If Louisiana gets smaller, people who live there can be slightly in fault. Every decision can result with consequences.
“Canada is the homeland of equality, justice and tolerance”-Kim Campbell. During the year 1982 and 2016 many things had occurred in Canada, to name a few the Canada creating its own constitution, $1 coin being named the loonie, Winter Olympics open in Calgary, and Canadian Human Rights Act to prohibit discrimination against gays. During 1982 and 2016 three things shaped Canada to what it is today and that is the Confederation Bridge, the North American Free Trade Agreement, and the Constitution Act.
The HEF claims that using the HSTP as a tool to select potential teachers will reduce teacher turnover due to burnout. To be honest, I am not completely sold on the use of the HSTP as a screening tool for districts to use as part of their hiring practice. For one thing, numerous questions were so obvious it was almost comical while others needed only a little thought to figure out which answer was wanted. Additionally, like many of the students we teach, not everyone is good at taking tests. More importantly is the need to examine the effect of environment and life experience influence disposition; does a person’s disposition change over
Climate Change is the change in climate patterns and this problem has been weighing around us since the 20th century. “The scientific consensus reached in 2007 by the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is that warming of the Earth’s climate system is unequivocally taking place and that such warming will affect sea levels" (Coastal Council, section 1). The problem with climate change
The first hazard that residents of Maryland are exposed to during a hurricane are floods. Floods can become very dangerous in a coastal community that is already close to sea level. With a flood becomes floodwater. Floodwater can seriously disrupt the personal transportation by cutting off the roads in any area. With flooding, becomes standing water or wet materials within a structure. Standing water or wet materials cause bacteria, mold, and viruses that can cause disease, which can trigger allergic reactions, and continue to damage materials long after a flood has occurred. Severe floods not only ruin homes or local businesses and destroy personal property, but the water left behind can cause further damage to property and its contents. The environment and wildlife are also at risk with floods, when damage occurs to homes or businesses, it can also cause the accidental release of toxic materials like paints, pesticides, or gasoline. When flooding occurs and
“The Year of the Flood” is an epic, sprawling novel that moves back and forth between past, present and future effortlessly. Though it is told from Ren and Toby’s point of view, the novel is really about the story of three women (Ren, Toby, and Amanda) and their will to survive in a cruel and harsh world. It is a story of hope, despite all odds and a story of the power of love.
First, global climate change is a serious problem because it increases natural disasters. If you have ever watched the news in your lifetime, you know that this issue is becoming more frequent and worse over time. “Globally, the number of reported weather-related
Over the years there has been a lot of controversy on if climate change is an issue that needs to be discussed and solved. There is a constant debate among scientist on if human actions are contributing the changing of earth’s climates. Climate change is defined as the change in average weather patterns for a specific region or Earth as a whole. This could include the change in an average temperature for a city or the amount a rainfall it receives (Dunbar, 2015). The main difference between weather and climate is the period of time specific patterns are recorded. Weather patterns are looked at over a much shorter period of time, meaning that these patterns are going to be more sporadic and change more frequently. Climate on the other had is recorded over a much longer period of time and usually show less drastic changes in patterns when compared to weather. Some people may argue that climate change is not an issue because Earth’s temperature is always changing do to natural effects. What people don’t realize is that human activity has effected the rate that earth’s temperature is changing, and just the smallest changes can lead to drastic consequences (Dunbar, 2015).
The novel The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood takes the Biblical origin story of man and creates a Garden of Eden for the end of the world. The novel’s allusion to Genesis adds to the message that the hardships befalling humanity and the destruction of the earth are due to man’s sinful nature just as Adam and Eve’s punishments and expulsion from paradise were a direct result of their sin. Adam and Eve, the first to live immorally on earth, are now recreated into a group of people that will witness the world’s end in a reflection of its beginning. The new Garden of Eden is created and lost in a time when new intelligence is created by man and evil fights for the hold of man once more. However, just as the expulsion from the original Garden led to the beginning of the world known today, the expulsion from the second Garden leads to the creation of a new world where humanity is largely absent.
I decided on The Marine Corps and being a Firefighter as my two careers because I’m really passionate about both of them. Most of my family has been in the military. Since I was a kid I have always wanted to join the Marine Corps. I also really like Firefighters because just like the marines they risk their lives almost every day and i have much respect for everyone that serves to help others in the line of duty. No one really inspired me going into any of these career paths except for my family because they try to push me to my full potential. I feel like these careers can push me to have higher and better goals then what i have now. Although becoming a Firefighter would be amazing I feel that joining the military would be more satisfying as a career path.
