For many people in the world they have their own religions and beliefs. For some this can be a great part of their life. With it being such a great part with their life, it might be the only thing keeping them going through the day. Keeping faith can be hard during hardship some stages some people might experience would be devotion, questioning faith and finally losing faith. In the beginning of the memoir Night, Eli was very devoted to his faith. Eli was asking the question, “Why do you pray?” In his head he thought,-“Why did I pray? Strange question. Why did I live? Why did I breath?” (4). Comparing breathing to prayer shows how much this was a part of his life. “By day I studied the Talmud and by night I would run to the synagogue to …show more content…
“Never shall I forget those moments that murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams into ashes,”(34). It takes a lot of events to take your soul and dreams to be burnt into ashes. Eli was going through a really hard time and wanted answers that were not heard from God. Without the closure of the events going on he started to question if there was even a God at all. During Kaddis is when Eli finally realized that he has lost his faith. He no longer wanted to be a part of anything. “But now, I no longer pleaded for anything. I was no longer able to lament. On the contrary, I felt very strong. I was the accuser, God the accused,”(68). Even though he no longer was devoted, it opened another door for him, just like the saying when one door closes another one opens. All the events that Eli went through were traumatic and it took him so long to lose what he loved, faith. Those who go through hardships can make it hard to keep what you love including your faith. Some of the stages of losing faith are being fully devoted, question faith, and losing it. Even though Eli lost his faith he was still strong and even stronger than he was before. Do not believe losing something you love will always end badly. With one door closed another one opens, if you lose your faith don’t lose
Elie loses complete faith in god in many points where god let him down. He struggles physically and mentally for life and no longer believes there is a god. Elie worked hard to save himself and asks god many times to help him and take him out of the misery he was facing. "Why should I sanctify his name? The Almighty, the eternal, and terrible Master of the Universe, chose to be silent..."(page 33). Elie was confused, because he doesn’t know why the Germans would kill his race amongst many others, and he does not know why god could let such thing happen to innocent people. "I did not deny god's existence, but I doubted his absolute justice..."(page 42). These conditions gave him confidence, and a courage to
When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. He had led Israel forty years.
No matter how hard life can be, we can overcome it with God’s help. He is the reason he survived. He is the reason we are here. Elie kept his faith through the whole experience. That is amazing for someone who faced that much persecution and kept on worshiping
At this point I was convince Eliezer wasn’t Elie anymore. That his nickname ringed in his ears with emptiness and not a trace of sweet or aching reminiscing. He already lost his foundation at first - everything he grew up to know and everyone he grew to love. If that wasn’t enough his faith in God was stomped on and all of of his passion and love, along with nearly every other emotion, was forgotten and he could no longer remember all of the happiness he felt before. His heart was hollow. All he was now was a soulless boy who was forced to be a man too
When going through a hard time you usually hear people say ¨it can either make you or break you” but what about all the people who it doesn't do either? What if they are left high and dry? ¨I have not lost faith in God. I have moments of anger and protest. Sometimes I've been closer to him for that reason.¨ (Wiesel 73). In this quote I consider that Elie is in the middle, he hasn't strayed his faith but he is furious with God and might be slowly losing it. Elie heard people ask where God was all of the time, and he found himself pleading ¨Where is he? He is here--He is hanging here on this gallows...¨ (Chollabud). This shows he hasn't lost faith but instead he is trying to help others to regain it. Elie had once said ¨Never shall I forget
Elie's struggle with his faith to God is a major internal conflict he has with him self in the book Night. In the beginning of the book, his faith in God is completly untoched. When questiond about his faith and why he would pray to God, he ask, “Why did I pray? Why did I live? Why did I breathe?”( Winsel Pg 2) His belief in a powerful and able God is untouched, and he cannot think of living without his faith in his religions practices, as it has been one of the main guides in his life. But this faith he has is shaken by his experience during the Holocaust and the events that took place, what he lives and what he sees.
Elie was deeply devoted to his faith at the beginning but as the story progresses he loses that devotion and barely believes that there is a God that exists. The first signs of him losing his faith was when he arrived at the first camp and saw the horrible things people were doing to the Jews. Other people around him had already lost faith in God and Elie was beginning to doubt God due to Him allowing people to do this to others. “His
We encounter Elie’s lost of faith throughout the book. Once he was separate he was brought to an area where bodies were being thrown into a fire. He started losing his faith in humanity once he saw the cruel things that were happening. When people lose there faith, they lose their faith in God and themselves. They start looking on the negative side of life and just lose their focus for what they wanted. Elie would want to study the Cabala but his father didn’t approve of it. He would always look out for not just his family but the people around him. Elie would always pray but wouldn't know why. He fascinated with Judaism so he goes without his father’s permission to learn more. “Never shall I forget those flames, which consumed my faith forever.” on page 45 clearly tells us that his faith was lost due to the fact that bodies were being thrown into the flames. As the book
In the beginning of the book, Elie’s faith in God is so strong that he never questions His existence. He went to the synagogue every day after school unlike other boys this age. He wanted to get closer to God by studying the Jewish texts more. He thought that the closer to God that if he was close to God than God will save him from anything. “One day I asked my father to find me a master who could guide me in my studies of Kabbalah” (Wiesel 4). Elie’s
Another time Elie questions God and his faith is around Rosh Hashana, the new year. All the Jews gathered together to say prayers to God. He questions God for allowing all these terrible things to happen to them when they live their lives for Him.
It’s in these moments that Eliezer has lost all faith he had in humanity and religion, which he
So, in the beginning of the book Elie was aked by Moishe the Beadle why he prays, so Elie responds, “Why did I pray? Strange question. Why did I live? Why did I breathe?” (page 4) This shows how “profoundly” he believes in his faith. Elie compared his faith to living and breathing, because to him, his isn’t just something he believes, it’s his way of life. He would not even think of doing something against his religion.
At one point, Eli and the rest of the prisoners witness a little boy being hung. He had been there, hanging from the gallows, between life and death for more than half an hour. Behind Eli, he heard a man asking, " For God's sake, where is God? And from within me... there he is-hanging from the gallows"(pg 65). The quote shows Eli starting to lose his faith because he feels like God is just there watching the people suffer but not doing anything to stop
Faith plays a big part in the book “Night”, by Elie Wiesel. Elie seemed to have more faith in humanity and God than those who were older than him. Yet when when he and his family enter the concentration camps that faith disappeared. The faith he had in God, Humanity and including himself were gone.
What is faith? Scripture tells us in Hebrews 11:1 that “Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” (NIV) Faith means trusting that various situations will provide results best suited to help us in some way during our life. I’m sure others may have a different opinion; however, throughout my life, that has been the most accurate description.
