Fear and evil Fear is a very strong emotion. It’s created by the thoughts we create in our minds. We can all choose whether we listen to those thoughts or if we push it to the back of our minds and carry on with our day. Sometimes fear is good. It tells us that we should get out of a dangerous situation or place. Other times, it can be evil. It controls and sabotages us. It haunts us everyday. Controlling people, like Jack, use it to their advantage. Other people, like Ralph, push them to the back of their minds and focus on the more important things in life. Simon comes face to face with the fear and evil. “I gave you food, said Jack, and my hunters will protect you from the beast. Who will join my tribe?” [215-6] Jack said this after a successfully killing the pig, while trying to gain power from Ralph. This is just one of the things he has done to control the others using …show more content…
He stays true to his morals and beliefs, he’s fearless and he’s shown as a symbol of God. “You’ll get back alright.”[159] Simon said to Ralph when Ralph felt they were never going to get rescued. Simon is the only one of the boys who interacts with the beast. He walks alone in the jungle when he passes out and envisions the pig’s head on a stick, swarming with flies. The “Lord of the Flies”. He is convinced that it is talking to him. “Fancy thinking the beast was something you could hunt or kill...You knew didn’t you? I’m part of you? Close, close, close. I’m the reason why it’s no go? Why are things what they are?” [206] This is the Lord of the flies telling Simon that the boys created the beast and the real beast is inside of them. Simon climbs up to the mountain, determined to see the beast, only to stumble upon a dead parachutist. When he runs to tell the others, he is killed. The boys have lost their minds and let the evil take them over. The goodness on the island is gone. Simon knew where the real evil was, and now no one
Simon is the one boy who never participates in destructive behaviors and always contributes to the well being of the boys. He continues to work even after everyone stops, gives Piggy food when no one else will, and speaks his mind about the beast. He is also the only one to realize that the true beast is inside the boys. Simon’s moral compass, much like the superego, allows him to see the evil of mankind. Simon is whole-heartedly good. The superego attempts to lead a person to the morally right pathway, much like Simon aims to show Ralph how he can do what’s best for the tribe. The primitive nature of the others overpowers Simon’s internal good nature. Even after his death, Simon’s moral nature lives on through the boys similar to how the superego can continue to shine after a person follows the desires of the id.
This mask depicts Jack’s identity from the book Lord of the Flies. Starting from the bottom of the mask, there is a quote from Jack which is one of the last things he says before leaving Ralph’s group: “I’m not going to play any longer. Not with you”. This quote is significant to Jack because not only does it show the end of the impact on Jack that the tamed and edified society Ralph has developed, it shows how childish he is. Before Jack says this, he puts Ralph’s conch on the grass in front of him and cries.
Johnn, lived in the largest tree in the world. He was a purple bird who lived with his brothers. Johnny, as he was known, was different from them. Simon always seemed to have an affinity for meditation. He would leave the group of boys and take it upon himself to go into the woods and pray alone or mediate for self soothing. Simon is sensitive towards the boy's’ feelings when situations arise. Simon felt compassion for Ralph when he was uncertain about their return to civilization, “You’ll get back to where you came from… you’ll get back alright. I think so, anyway.
Simon has a heightened perception, even more so than Piggy. Simon is unique because he can actually hear the voice of the beast. He realizes that the beast is not something one can kill because it 's inside the boys. Simon is seen as a Christ figure. He gives up his own life in an attempt to tell the rest of the boys about the beast. Jack wants to take control over the whole society. Jack is the leading support of anarchy on the island. Jack is the leader of the savage tribe which hunts the pigs. Opposed to Ralph and Piggy on almost all matters, Jack represents the identification of one 's personality he supports the notion that one 's desires are most important and should be followed, regardless of reason or morals. Jack is the kind of person that is believed everyone would eventually become if left alone to set one 's own standards and live the way one naturally wanted. In this novel it is believed that the natural state of humans is disordered and that man is inherently evil. When reason is abandoned, only the strong survive. Jack personifies this idea perfectly.

"Lord of the Flies shows how intelligence and common sense of the average person will always be overthrown in society by sadism and the lure of totalitarianism. " (Critic C. B. Cox), the extent of which this quote may apply to, falls where one has the intellectual capability to resist these lures. While this analysis of consuming incivility is a very prominent theme throughout the book, the book also demonstrates how some in the book overcame these lures with the strength of their intelligence. The book demonstrates events in which intelligence and common sense are overthrown by sadism and totalitarianism, but it also demonstrates figures in the book which resist the lures of sadism and totalitarianism.
In the Novel lord of the flies, it is evident that the stranded school boys attempt to build a civilization. Throughout the building of this new civilization the most challenging factor is leading the school boys and keeping the young boys on track, which is hard enough let alone being on an island with no adults. This making their civilization fragile. A constant fear is looming around the boys, which in the end is what breaks this fragile society. A fear of many factors including; Being stranded forever possibly, A beast and starvation. These fears divide the group of school boys and blinds the boys from the most important goal, surviving till their rescue.
In William Goldman’s Lord of the Flies, a group of boys are stranded on an island after a plane crash, and must figure out how they can survive on the island. The novel mainly focuses on Ralph, who was elected chief. People have debated that the Lord of the Flies main theme is social order or power and control; however, the main theme of the book is about fearing the unknown. We can deduce that this is the main theme from the very start of the book when the boys are all on an island that they aren’t familiar with. Lord of the Flies is based around the fear of the unknown because it makes the characters unpredictable and interesting.
The word ―power is often used to show dominance over others or display leadership over a group. Does power change people’s actions? To answer this question, a large majority of Lord of the Flies revolves around power and how certain characters rise and fall due to its influence. Throughout the story, William Golding, demonstrates that when an person has power their actions change.
“...fear can't hurt you any more than a dream.” Quote William Golding in Lord of Flies. William Golding argues that the fear of the unknown gives a high disadvantage to certain boys who are easily frightened. Golding’s opinion of fear is expressed in Lord of the Flies, relating to the nightmares he had as a child and his fear of abuse from his parents. In our society, the less courageous people have more life struggles and do not have as many experiences. I believe this novel proves that fear holds us back, but in reality, it will not hurt us.
Revenge is a common concept, and has been incarnated in many different ways throughout history; there’s the concept of an eye for an eye, which implies that the person taking revenge does it by themself, and, on the other end, there’s the concept of karma, which implies that another force will exact revenge for the person who wants it. No matter the idea, however, the concept is always the same: a person who has wronged another gets wronged to the same extent. Revenge can become excessive, though, and can lead to the corruption of a person’s morals and ideals. In his novel The Lord of the Flies, William Golding demonstrates how a person's wish for revenge can easily corrupt them. Golding demonstrates this using the character Jack, who, throughout the book, is motivated by spite and a wish for revenge.
This reminds Jack and Ralph that there is a chance that the beast is real and there may be reason for all the fear. It also reveals that Simon's character is very much in touch with reality. He is not trying to push the fact that a beast could be on the island away from him. He is trying to deal with his fear and show the others that they can and should deal with theirs.
Ralph explains that after Simons death, the young boys not only had to fear the chance of survival and fear the high probability that they would be there until they died also ended up fearing
