“A leader is one that knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way” (Maxwell). When put into a desperate situation someone has to be a leader. Two boys fight to be leader one prevails and does his absolute best to make sure the island remains intact. Throughout the novel Lord of the Flies, William Golding is able to touch on the many aspects of our civilization through the various characters he creates. Leadership plays a very important role in the novel as it does in real life because the characters need to feel some sense of security in order for them to survive. The two main leaders in the story, through their similar and different leadership characteristics and objectives fight back and forth to gain the discipline of the other boys on the island and generally the power to make the decisions that they feel should be made. Both leaders, Jack and Ralph, experience leading the group in their own style, which is similar in their desire for control yet different
Vince Lombardi once said “that leaders are not born, they are created.” This quote explains that if anyone wants to be a leader, they need to take charge and understand what the needs of everyone around them have. Leaders do not quit; they strive enough to survive the good, the bad, and the evil. In the story The Lord of The Flies, Jack was the only one to gain total control over the boys which put him as the chief over anyone on the island. Jack is the most courageous, inspirational, and spontaneous leader on that island, regardless of who was originally chosen to lead the boys.
The novel, “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, shows the struggles that young characters stranded on an island are having to become a leader and surpass others. The story currently has a group of young and innocent children stuck on an island trying to survive and prosper. However they need a leader, which Ralph becomes, and therefore starting a disruption between others. Consequently, since Ralph is scarcely showing a considerable amount of leadership qualities, a multitudinous amount of characters visualize they would suit that position exceptionally. Golding creates the skill of leadership between Jack, Ralph, and Piggy, however Golding shows Piggy as a less innocent and more knowledgeable character which suits a extravagant leader,
American author Warren Bennis, who is said to have pioneered the field of leadership studies, famously said, “Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality” (BrainyQuote), exploring what it means to be a leader. He states that the most important quality of leading is the ability to get things done. Golding investigates what makes a good leader in his novel Lord of the Flies, in which two boys of vastly different leadership styles (named Ralph and Jack) fight for the leadership of many young boys marooned together on a desert island with no adults. Ralph represents the traditional leader--benevolent, caring about his subjects, but can’t get anything done. Jack is more of the traditional politician--great at manipulating people, caring more about power than his people, but gets things done. In Golding’s Lord of the Flies, Jack is the best leader for the boys due to his ability to fulfill his promises and his experience as a leader. Golding uses this to show that the best leaders aren’t always the most concerned with ethics and morals.
When stranded, there is one person that needs to take charge and the leadership role. Lord of The Flies, written by William Golding, is written about a group of young boys that are stranded on an island with no parents. In the beginning Ralph, the main character, immediately tries to take charge but is eventually put down by Jack. Jack is a strong leader but not a good one, because he uses intimidation to get people to vote for him as leader. Jack’s group takes control and kills all of Ralph’s group except for Ralph. At the end of the story, everyone is chasing down Ralph and they are about to kill him when a boat pulls up and a British officer rescues them. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding portrays Jack as an example of leadership because he forcefully takes control of the group, he is a very strong leader and knows how to lead a group, he is happy to be on the island, and he is a very skilled hunter so he provides food.
What does being a good leader really mean? In the novel, Lord of the Flies, William Golding puts two boys in a leadership position where they are faced with the needs of the other boys and themselves. On their way to a safer location, boys from a boarding school get in a place crash and stuck on an abandoned island with limited resources. While here, many of the boys resorted to savagery while the others focused on being rescued. Jack led the group that resorted to savagery while Ralph led the group whose main priority was getting rescued. Throughout Lord of the Flies, both Ralph and Jack took on a leadership role over the boys and often disagreed amongst each other on who should be the ultimate leader, having conflicting personalities; however, Jack acted like he was superior to the others which would make Ralph the better leader because Ralph stayed loyal to the boys and had a rescue plan in order to get all of the boys off of the island.
Leadership poses an important role in the book “Lord of the Flies”. Much of the story revolves around the altercation between Ralph and Jack as they both strive for the title of leader of the group. Within this bout, the leadership skills within each of the boys rises to surface. However, although they both may possess the skills of a leader, this does not always mean that they are both representative of a good leader. Whether Ralph or Jack’s ideals represent good or malevolence, a true leader practices three skills: engaging people, encouraging people, and enforcing rules.
What is it that makes an effective leader be able to run a group smoothly? In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies Leadership is the main importance because in the book Jack proves that he is a better leader compared to Ralph by being effective, In the book, Jack is more effective than Ralph because firstly he has a clearly defined purpose. The Boys in The Lord Of the Flies learned what it means to be a leader. People may think that a superhero is a defiant leader. What qualities make superheroes leaders? They might have loyalty, heroism, or fighting skills. They are seen as the good guys. Not all “superheroes” come from movies and are always good but some can be evil and cruel and come from books. These three boys from The Lord of the Flies by William Golding, are perfect examples of leaders. Piggy for instance shows leadership by loyalty. His loyalty to Ralph is like a dog and his owner. The bond can only be broken if one so called died. Another way Golding expresses leadership through his novel, is through the main character Ralph. At the get go of the story, Ralph finds the Conch Shell and brings the castaways together and this is a key piece to the story. Ralph starts the story off..he defines the book. An excellent way Golding shows evil and cruel characters can be leaders is through Jack. Jack is a Hunter and he defines savagery in the book. He deprived loyalty and politeness and he basically threw the power of the Conch into the garbage can like it’s worthless.
This essay is about Leadership and how it can be used in a good way and a bad way and how this book shows both, and also who I personally thought the best leader was and why. Leadership is all over the world, it can be very good or it may be very bad for some people. In the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph was a smart leader for the group. He always had a plan, his number one priority was to get out of that island as quick as possible. He always made sure there was a fire so somebody on a ship could see the smoke and rescue them. On the other hand, there was Jack was on the same side as Ralph and so was all the other characters because Ralph was chosen to be the leader. Later in the novel, Jack and Ralph get into it a lot and it really sets them both off and they end up separating groups. Ralph hates it because they are the only people on that island and he wanted them all to be with him, and they could protect each other. Jack wanted to hunt always, he would forget the fires unless it was for cooking uses and didn’t care about getting saved or anything, he just loved getting his own food and it started driving him and his team crazy and they end up killing Piggy and Simon.
Reading the novel Lord of the Flies, by William Golding has been an experience some will never forget. Most people never knew islands and children could be a disaster. Some believe Ralph demonstrates the best leadership on the island. Ralphs ability to successfully get everyone quiet at the meeting. Organizing everyone into groups on what they should do like building shelters so he gained the followers at the start. One of the best reasons Ralph shows the best leadership is when he is showing productive leadership by giving the others instructions. Furthermore shows good order and civilization throughout the novel. In addition leadership in the real world when the leader talks less and listens more to the people that follow them. Finally some may say Jack is a good leader because he can kill a pig but that’s not all a good leader should be able to do.
In desperate survival occasions, depending on the people of the group and how the situation is put, the right type of leader is needed. This kind of situation is seen in the book Lord of the Flies written by William Golding, and emphasizes how different young boys take leadership in different ways. Even though they are minor ages, with their basic knowledge of government and management, they are some what able to survive. Ralph and Jack are arguably the two main leaders in this story amongst the other boys. However Ralph shows a more prominent domination in his leadership because he provides emotional support for all of the boys, and he maintains his properness which keeps order in the groups.
Leadership is something a person has, they can't really develop it, and a perfect example is in the novel “Lord of The Flies”. In the novel, there are two different kids that want to be the leader; Jack and Ralph. Both of the boys end up fighting in the novel about who is a better leader and they end up killing some of the other boys to prove they should be. Jack has some strong assets that would make him a better leader such as he is straight forward and isn't worried about what the other boys would think about him, so he is confident. The reason to believe that Ralph is a better leader because of his passion, responsibility, and treatment of the boys.
